Multi-way principal component analysis (MPCA) has been successfully applied to the monitoring of batch and semi-batch process in fine chemical and biochemical industry. However, traditional MPCA is based on the assumption that the separated latent variables must be subject to Gaussian distribution, which sometimes cannot be satisfied. In the present work, a new method combined independent component analysis (ICA) and multi-way principal component (MPCA) approach is proposed without assuming that the latent variables subject to Gaussian distribution. The approach is based on ICA method that finds independent variables as linear combination of MPCA latent variables. Combined ICA and MPCA method is capable of describing non-Gaussian distributed data precisely. This algorithm is evaluated on the penicillin fermentation benchmark process and is compared to the traditional MPCA. The method has significant benefit when the data does not subject to normal distribution.

With the development of soccer robots, application of embedded real-time operating system (RTOS) in the control system of robots is attracting more and more considerable attention for meeting the increased requirements of complexity and real time. A control system of intelligent robocup was developed, which was based on the embedded RTOS of MicroC/OS-II and the digital signal processing (DSP) chip of TMS320F2407. It adopted the control algorithm of PPLID available in the literature. This control system is superior in computation, control and real-time performance.

Training simulator can model all phenomena of startup, shutdown, routine operation and malfunction in actual factory without any raw materials and danger. An operator trained by training simulator for several weeks can get more experiences than one working in the field for two to five years. As a scientific training method, training simulator is attracting more and more considerable attentions. SIMUPRO series training simulators for large scale industrial processes developed by Zhejiang University, have been successfully applied in many petrochemical works where distributed control systems (DCS) are used. SIMUPRO series training simulators are remarked well by broad users for their advanced technology, practicability and reliability. The functions, architectures, designs and characters of these training simulators are elucidated in this work.

Simulated moving bed chromatography (SMBC) is attracting increased interest for separations of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. The SMBC process is a mixed discrete and continuous process. It is a non-linear non-ideal multivariable-coupling hybrid system. A detailed model that takes account of non-linear isotherms, mass transfer resistance, extra-column effect, and discrete event of port periodic switching, was developed to simulate the complex dynamics. All design parameters (number, configuration, length and diameter of columns, pre-column dead volume, post-column dead volume, particle size) and operation parameters (switching period, feed concentrations, flow rates of recycling flow, desorbent, extract, feed and raffinate) can be chosen correctly by numerical simulation. This model can facilitate the design, operation, process optimization and advanced control of a SMBC unit.

The necessary and sufficient conditions of fault detectability under the PLS framework are discussed. A new partial least squares optimum detecting model (PLS-ODM) is proposed to improve the monitoring performance of the PLS method. This PLS-ODM is deduced according to the fault subspace and the VP index of the process variables that could be used to estimate the importance of the measurements to the quality. Compared with traditional PLS, PLS-ODM has the stronger fault detecting power, and could detect much weaker important process faults exactly in time. The application of it in Tennessee Eastman (TE) benchmark statistical quality control confirms that its detection performance is improved remarkably to make it possible to avoid process shutdown to reduce cost and stabilize product quality.

The author present a study of the finite word length (FWL) implementation for digital controller structures using /spl delta/-operator. The closed-loop roundoff noise gain using /spl delta/-operator is defined and analyzed based on stochastic control theory. The optimal controller realizations are obtained via minimizing the roundoff noise gain. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the design procedure and the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

This paper discussed data integration on manufacturing execution system (MES) in process industry, especially petrochemical process. The three layers model (ERP/MES/PCS) of contemporary integrated manufacturing system (CIMS) in process industry was analyzed. Then, the solution of MES oriented data integration, i.e., material balance and yield accounting was given. Finally, the implementation of heterogeneous data integration and its application in a petrochemical plant were presented.

A classic yet challenging research topic, Gaussian mixture density modeling and decomposition, is attracting much attention in a variety of disciplines. A Gaussian mixture density can be viewed as a contaminated Gaussian density with respect to each Gaussian component in the mixture. A component may not be well represented when the data is analyzed from a mixture density. In this article, Gaussian mixture density modeling and decomposition with weighted likelihood is studied. Then based on the Gaussian mixture density decomposition (GMDD) algorithm and weighted likelihood equations (WLEs), a new algorithm, called weighted Gaussian mixture density decomposition (WGMDD) algorithm is proposed. The WGMDD algorithm is effective and robust. It produces estimates with low bias and mean square error, and makes the applications of GMDD algorithm more extensive and more exact. A small simulation experiment illustrates the above point.

Unlike steady-state optimization and linear model predictive control, dynamic optimization and nonlinear model predictive control is underway to industry application. This paper discusses the implementation issues of two-level control strategy integrated dynamic real-time optimization and nonlinear model predictive control of a heat-integrated distillation column system. To realize this scheme, four nonlinear programming problems: economic operation optimization, data reconciliation and state estimation, parameter estimation and nonlinear model predictive control, are considered based on system rigorous dynamic model. The economic operation optimization is to minimize the cost of the plant. The unmeasured states are estimated by measurements of temperatures, pressures and flow rates. Time-variant parameters such as tray efficiencies and feed composition are updated on-line. The sequential quadratic programming and orthogonal collocation are used to solve the dynamic nonlinear optimization problems.

A synthetical method of multivariable control system performance assessment is proposed in this paper, which uses multivariable minimum variance control (MVC) benchmark to determine the stochastic performance, and normalized multivariate impulse response (NMIR) curve as an alternative measure of performance to test the dynamic performance, and with the help of auto-correlation function (ACF) and cross-correlation function (CCF) to analyse if there are oscillations exist. The method is applied to assess the performance of multivariable predictive control system of industrial distillation column.
