Analysis of the regulatory mechanism of exogenous IAA-mediated tryptophan accumulation and synthesis of endogenous IAA in Chlorococcum humicola

The activated sludge method is widely used for the treatment of phenol-containing wastewater, which gives rise to the problem of toxic residual sludge accumulation. Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), a typical phytohormone, facilitates the microalgal resistance to toxic inhibition while promoting biomass accumulation. In this study, Chlorococcum humicola (C. humicola) was cultured in toxic sludge extract and different concentrations of IAA were used to regulate its physiological properties and enrichment of high value-added products. Ultimately, proteomics analysis was used to reveal the response mechanism of C. humicola to exogenous IAA. The results showed that the IAA concentration of 5 × 10−6 mol/L (M) was most beneficial for C. humicola to cope with the toxic stress in the sludge extract medium, to promote the activity of rubisco enzyme, to enhance the efficiency of photosynthesis, and, finally, to accumulate protein as a percentage of specific dry weight 1.57 times more than that of the control group. Exogenous IAA altered the relative abundance of various amino acids in C. humicola cells, and proteomic analyses showed that exogenous IAA stimulated the algal cells to produce more indole-3-glycerol phosphate (IGP), indole, and serine by up-regulating the enzymes. These precursors are converted to tryptophan under the regulation of tryptophan synthase (A0A383V983), and tryptophan can be metabolized to endogenous IAA to promote the growth of C. humicola. These findings have important implications for the treatment of toxic residual sludge while enriching for high-value amino acids. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

This paper considers the problem of designing of iterative learning control (ILC) laws for linear batch processes. Unlike the majority of existing results about ILC law design for linear batch processes over repetitive/two-dimensional setting where Lyapunov theory is applied, this study is focused on formulating the ILC law design procedures by transforming it into an equivalent problem of (structural) stability analysis for a linear Roesser model for two-dimensional (2D) systems. Then, based on a non-conservative version of stability and stabilization conditions for linear 2D systems, suitable PD-type ILC laws are derived by the application of the linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. Finally, a numerical example is given to show the validity of the proposed design procedure and some advantages are emphasized when compared to the existing alternatives.

Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) is a familiar odorant found at chemical and pesticide sites, characterized by a low odor threshold and high volatility. In this study, a catalytic degradation system for DMDS using ClO2/Mn2+/WS2 was developed. The residual rate of DMDS decreased to 10.58% within 80 min under the following reaction conditions: 400 μM ClO2, 20 μM Mn2+, 80 μM WS2, and a pH of 7.0. XPS analysis confirmed the co-catalytic synergistic effect of WS2 and Mn2+. The metal valence cycling is the primary factor that enhances the activation of ClO2 for DMDS degradation. EPR tests and quenching experiments investigated the critical reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the reaction process, including 1O2, ·OH, and ClO2. In the initial 10 min of the fast reaction stage, 1O2 (44.48% reaction rate contribution) and ClO2 (55.52% reaction rate contribution) played the primary oxidation roles. ·OH (49.16% reaction rate contribution) and ClO2 (50.84% reaction rate contribution) became dominant during the slower reaction stage in the last 70 min. Further, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, in conjunction with GC-MS and ICS analyses, were used to predict potential degradation pathways of DMDS. This study presents a practical approach for efficiently removing DMDS in pesticide facilities and chemical industrial parks. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Mechanisms of organic dissolution and toxic release in sludge during anaerobic hydrolysis enhanced by ultrasound-alkaline treatment

The residual sludge is rich in organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, and other nutrients. However, due to its poor solubility, its bioavailability is limited, leading to low resource utilization efficiency. Anaerobic hydrolysis of sludge can dissolve cell-bound organic matter, enhancing the resource recovery potential of residual sludge. Under low-intensity ultrasound (60 W) and alkaline (pH = 9) pretreatment, anaerobic hydrolysis of sludge released substantial amounts of TOC, COD, TN, and TP. Hydroquinone, a representative phenolic compound, was selected as the target pollutant to acclimate activated sludge stepwise, simulating the residual sludge after industrial phenolic wastewater treatment. The study found that, compared to the control sludge hydrolysate (methanol-acclimated), the TOC content and organic toxicity of the toxic sludge hydrolysate (hydroquinone-acclimated) were significantly higher. The TOC concentrations in the toxic and control groups were 392.8 ± 19.65 mg/L and 264.44 ± 13.22 mg/L, respectively, with toxicity levels of 69.15 ± 3.46 % and 38.08 ± 1.9 %. By analyzing TOC changes, toxicity differences across molecular weight ranges, and 3D-EEMs spectra, it was found that the organic toxicity of sludge mainly originated from aromatic proteins in the 5-10 kDa range, particularly tryptophan and tyrosine. During anaerobic hydrolysis, dominant microbial communities decompose and utilize sludge organics through metabolic pathways such as amino acid biosynthesis, carbohydrate biosynthesis, glycolysis, respiration, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, and amino acid metabolism. This process converts macromolecular substances in sludge into small molecules such as amino acids and monosaccharides, providing a novel strategy for the resource utilization of residual sludge. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

In the fossil energy industries, pyrophoric iron sulphides (PISs), the most commonly mentioned pyrophoric material, are widely distributed in the exploitation, transportation, storage, refining equipment and piping of oil and natural gas. When equipment and piping are opened for inspection or maintenance, they may be exposed to air and act as an ignition source by undergoing an exothermic reaction. Accordingly, they become hot or incandescent and can ignite nearby inflammable hydrocarbon-air mixtures. Numerous researchers have performed various research into this area. There are four main interests involved in this regard, and they are listed as follows: (1) the physical and chemical properties of PISs, (2) the suitable condition, processes, and mechanism for oxidation to spontaneous combustion of PISs, (3) the spontaneous combustion risk assessment of PISs, and (4) the active/passive prevention technologies and strategies of spontaneous combustion of PISs. Moreover, the main drawbacks existing in past research are also highlighted. Correspondingly, several solutions are put forward in combination with the current research methods, technology development trends, and industrial practice requirements. By the thorough summary, it is expected to lay a foundation and direct further research into the oxidation to spontaneous combustion of PISs, as well as to better enrich the theoretical basis and technical support for the improvement of production safety management levels in the petroleum, natural gas, and coal chemical industry. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd
