High-energy-density electron beam from interaction of two successive laser pulses with subcritical-density plasma

It is shown by particle-in-cell simulations that a narrow electron beam with high energy and charge density can be generated in a subcritical-density plasma by two consecutive laser pulses. Although the first laser pulse dissipates rapidly, the second pulse can propagate for a long distance in the thin wake channel created by the first pulse and can further accelerate the preaccelerated electrons therein. Given that the second pulse also self-focuses, the resulting electron beam has a narrow waist and high charge and energy densities. Such beams are useful for enhancing the target-back space-charge field in target normal sheath acceleration of ions and bremsstrahlung sources, among others.

Efficient detection of dangling pointer error for C/C++ programs

Dangling pointer error is pervasive in C/C++ programs and it is very hard to detect. This paper introduces an efficient detector to detect dangling pointer error in C/C++ programs. By selectively leave some memory accesses unmonitored, our method could reduce the memory monitoring overhead and thus achieves better performance over previous methods. Experiments show that our method could achieve an average speed up of 9% over previous compiler instrumentation based method and more than 50% over previous page protection based method.

The Double Heterogeneous (DH) system, where fuel particles are randomly dispersed in the non-fissile matrix, is challenging for the reactor physics calculation. The Sanchez-Pomraning method accurately handles the DH system, but integrating it into existing reactor physics code requires code development. This study adopts the Sanchez-Pomraning coupled Ultra-Fine-Group (SP-UFG) slowing-down calculation to generate the heterogeneous Resonance Integral (RI) for DH system treatment with simple volume homogenization. Fully Ceramic Micro-encapsulated (FCM) fuel pin-cells and plates with varying configurations are calculated for verification. Effective cross-sections (XSs) and keff calculated by the heterogeneous RI are compared with SP-UFG results. Results show that the maximum bias of XSs and keff caused by the XS biases are less than 5% and 200 pcm, respectively. The maximum bias of keff when compared with Monte Carlo calculated results is -213 pcm, demonstrating that only considering the DH effect in the resonance energy region is acceptable. © 2024, The Authors. It is found that stable proton acceleration from a thin foil irradiated by a linearly polarized ultraintense laser can be realized for appropriate foil thickness and laser intensity. A dual-peaked electrostatic field, originating from the oscillating and nonoscillating components of the laser ponderomotive force, is formed around the foil surfaces. This field combines radiation-pressure acceleration and target normal sheath acceleration to produce a single quasimonoenergetic ion bunch. A criterion for this mechanism to be operative is obtained and verified by two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. At a laser intensity of ∼5.5×1022 W/cm2, quasimonoenergetic GeV proton bunches are obtained with ∼100 MeV energy spread, less than 4° spatial divergence, and ∼50% energy conversion efficiency from the laser.

Zn–air battery is a promising energy storage device because of its remarkably high energy density. However, development of affordable oxygen catalysts with high eletrocatalytic activity and excellent durability is of critical importance for the implementation of rechargeable Zn–air batteries. Here, we report a novel synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) Co–N–C nanowire network (NN) and its remarkable electrocatalytic performance as a bifunctional electrocatalyst in rechargeable Zn–air batteries. The carbon nanowire network was derived from cost-effective cellulose, with Co and N heteroatom doping achieved by annealing the self-assembled[email protected]cellulose under N2. As reported here, the best sample synthesized at 800 °C, referred to as 3D Co–N–C NN-800, demonstrated an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) onset potential of 1.05 V and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential of 0.47 V (10 mA cm–2). As a result, a Zn–air battery assembled with 3D Co–N–C NN-800 demonstrates a small voltage gap of 0.8 V between charge and discharge and excellent durability, as evidenced by a minimal decay after 30 h operation (90 cycles, 15 mA cm–2). This study demonstrates a novel design strategy to enhance the electrcatalytic site and its homogeneity via the covalently bonded doping, which could be employed for the further development of bifunctional carbonaceous electrocatalysts.

In this paper, we introduce the first Challenge on Multi-modal Aerial View Object Classification (MAVOC) in conjunction with the NTIRE 2021 workshop at CVPR. This challenge is composed of two different tracks using EO and SAR imagery. Both EO and SAR sensors possess different advantages and drawbacks. The purpose of this competition is to analyze how to use both sets of sensory information in complementary ways. We discuss the top methods submitted for this competition and evaluate their results on our blind test set. Our challenge results show significant improvement of more than 15% accuracy from our current baselines for each track of the competition. © 2021, CC BY.

Deep learning-based age estimation using B-mode ultrasound tongue imaging

The feasibility of age estimation is explored using the ultrasound tongue image of the speakers. Motivated by the success of deep learning, a deep convolutional neural network model is trained on the UltraSuite dataset. The deep model achieves mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.03 years for the data from typically developing children, while MAE is 4.87 for the data from the children with speech sound disorders, which suggest that age estimation using ultrasound is more challenging for the children with speech sound disorder. Also, we explore to visualize what does the deep model learn for the age estimation task. We firstly visualize the convolutional layers in the learned convolutional neural networks. We observe that the deep model not only focuses on the contour in the ultrasound tongue image, but also pays more attention to the regions corresponding to the tendon and tongue root regions, which may provide guidance for future ultrasound tongue imaging interpretation tasks. The developed method can be used a tool to evaluate the performance of speech therapy sessions.

With the rapid development of the satellite industry, the information transmission network based on communication satellites has gradually become a major and important part of the future satellite ground integration network. However, the low transmission efficiency of the satellite data relay back mission has become a problem that is currently constraining the construction of the system and needs to be solved urgently. Effectively planning the task of satellite ground networking by reasonably scheduling resources is crucial for the efficient transmission of task data. In this paper, we hope to provide a task execution scheme that maximizes the profit of the networking task for satellite ground network planning considering feeding mode (SGNPFM). To solve the SGNPFM problem, a mixed-integer planning model with the objective of maximizing the gain of the link-building task is constructed, which considers various constraints of the satellite in the feed-switching mode. Based on the problem characteristics, we propose a distance similarity-based genetic optimization algorithm (DSGA), which considers the state characteristics between the tasks and introduces a weighted Euclidean distance method to determine the similarity between the tasks. To obtain more high-quality solutions, different similarity evaluation methods are designed to assist the algorithm in intelligently screening individuals. The DSGAalso uses an adaptive crossover strategy based on similarity mechanism, which guides the algorithm to achieve efficient population search. In addition, a task scheduling algorithm considering the feed-switching mode is designed for decoding the algorithm to generate a highquality scheme. The results of simulation experiments show that the DSGA can effectively solve the SGNPFM problem. This paper reviews the NTIRE 2024 Challenge on Short-form UGC Video Quality Assessment (S-UGC VQA), where various excellent solutions are submitted and evaluated on the collected dataset KVQ from popular short-form video platform, i.e., Kuaishou/Kwai Platform. The KVQ database is divided into three parts, including 2926 videos for training, 420 videos for validation, and 854 videos for testing. The purpose is to build new benchmarks and advance the development of S-UGC VQA. The competition had 200 participants and 13 teams submitted valid solutions for the final testing phase.
