The large amount of energy consumption of high performance computers represent significant financial cost. If we consider the specific situation of electricity price, a measure which makes the energy consumption the lowest is usually not the best on economy. This paper proposes an economical approach for designing a power management plan that reduces the assessment of energy consumption of high performance computers. By taking account of the electricity price in different periods during the day, we assign the workload to each period properly to make the electricity fee as low as possible. A simulation of the cases of a single task and multi-task demonstrates how our approach can be used. The results of the simulation show that our approach can save the electricity fee produced by high performance computers effectively. In the single task case, the proposed approach saves the electricity fee of 10.08% on average, and in the multi-task case the proportion of saved fee is 12.67%. © 2011 IEEE.

distributed real-time systems are of one important type of real-time systems. They are usually characterized by both reactive and real-time factors and it has long been recognized that how to automatically check such systems’ correctness at run time is still an unaddressed problem. As one of the main solutions, test oracle is a method usually used to check whether the system under test has behaved correctly on a particular execution. Test oracle is not only the indispensable stage of software testing, but also the weak link of the software testing research. In this paper, real-time specifications are adopted to describe the properties of distributed real-time systems and a real-time specification-based method for automatic run-time test oracles generating is proposed. The method proposed here is based on tableau construction theory of real-time model checking, automatically generates timed automata as test oracles, which can automatically check system behaviors’ correctness from real-time specifications written in MITL[0,d]. © IFIP International Federation for Information processing 2004.

Insects build architecturally complex nests and search for remote food by collaboration work despite their limited sensors, minimal individual intelligence and the lack of a central control system. Insets' collaborations emerge as a response of the individual insects to Stigmergy. A sign-based model of Stigmergy to discuss collaboration is proposed in this paper where we picked up "sign" as a key notion to understand it. Therefore, sign is the link of all the components in a Stigmergic complex adaptive system. Based on this understanding, we propose a definition that reveals the nature of signs and exploit the significations and relationships carried by the notion of sign. Then, a sign-based model of Stigmergy is consequently reached, which captures the essentials of Stigmergy. A basic architecture of Stigmergy as well as its constituents are presented and discussed. At last, some applications of the model are discussed. © 2010 Crown Copyright.

Recent advances in single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technology provides unprecedented opportunities for reconstruction gene regulation networks (GRNs). At present, many different models have been proposed to infer GRN from a large number of RNA-seq data, but most deep learning models use a priori gene regulatory network to infer potential GRNs. It is a challenge to reconstruct GRNs from scRNA-seq data due to the noise and sparsity introduced by the dropout effect. Here, we propose GAALink, a novel unsupervised deep learning method. It first constructs the gene similarity matrix and then refines it by threshold value. It then learns feature representations of genes through a graphical attention autoencoder that propagates information across genes with different weights. Finally, we use gene feature expression for matrix completion such that the GRNs are reconstructed. Compared with seven existing GRNs reconstruction methods, GAALink achieves more accurate performance on seven scRNA-seq dataset with four ground truth networks. GAALink can provide a useful tool for inferring GRNs for scRNA-seq expression data. © 2023 IEEE.

The influence of on-chip metal interconnections, power grids, heat sink together with packaging, and metal dummy fills on the transmission characteristics of a 2mm-long integrated dipole antenna pair has been investigated in this paper. These metal structures and placements have been classified and particular simulations are performed to explore the interference effects of neighboring various metal structures on transmission gain, phase, impedance and radiation pattern for on-chip dipole antenna pair. By virtue of the experimental results and analyses, several experiential linear expressions for antenna pair gain and phase in interference circumstances are obtained using numerical fit. A set of design rules is concluded accordingly for guiding on-chip antenna layout and design targeting wireless interconnect. © 2010 IEEE.

Transformer-based methods have demonstrated remarkable performance on image super-resolution tasks. Due to high computational complexity, researchers have been working to achieve a balance between computation costs and performance. Restormer has achieved commendable balance by utilizing global channel attention. However, the performance is limited by insufficient local pixel reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a U-shaped Dual Attention Transformer (UDAT) with local-global receptive field, addressing the limitation of Restormer in local pixel reconstruction. We propose a dense window channel attention to enhance the local feature representation, more efficient in computational complexity. Experiments demonstrate that our UDAT achieve superior performance compared with Restormer on benchmark datasets, surpassing Restormer by 0.57 dB on the Urban100 dataset. On-par with SwinIR, our method reduces computational complexity by 3.2 times and improves inference speed by 2 times, achieving a better balance between computational costs and performance. © 2024 IEEE.

Current high performance computing systems all rely on parallel processing techniques to achieve high performance. With the parallel computer systems scaling up, the new generation of high performance computers puts more emphasis on "high productivity" [1], rather than "high performance" as in the past. These new systems will not only meet the traditional requirements of computing performance, but also address the ongoing technical challenges in the current high-end computing domain regarding energy consumption, reliability, etc. For energy consumption, with the computer system scaling up, it increases dramatically [2]. High energy consumption means high maintenance cost and low system stability. For example, the peak energy consumption of the Earth Simulator and BlueGene/L is 18MW and 1.6MW respectively. For reliability, with the complexity of a computer system increasing, its meantimebetween-failure (MTBF) is becoming significantly shorter than what is required by many current high performance computing applications [3], such as BlueGene/L. Therefore, energy optimization techniques and fault tolerance techniques should be introduced to computer systems to achieve low energy consumption and high reliability. To improve the productivity of high performance computing systems, we need to find a proper way to measure it. Unfortunately, traditional measurement models can not evaluate the system productivity comprehensively and effectively [4]. To address this issue, this paper proposes an effective scalability metric for high performance computing systems based on Gustafson speedup law. The metric makes a good balance among runtime productivity factors including computing performance, energy consumption and reliability. Stragglers can temporize jobs and reduce cluster efficiency seriously. Many researches have been contributed to the solution, such as Blacklist[8], speculative execution[1, 6], Dolly[8]. In this paper, we put forward a new approach for mitigating stragglers in MapReduce, name Hummer. It starts task clones only for high-risk delaying tasks. Related experiments have been carried and results show that it can decrease the job delaying risk with fewer resources consumption. For small jobs, Hummer also improves job completion time by 48% and 10% compared to LATE and Dolly. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2015.

Meeting deadlines for approximation processing in MapReduce environments

To provide timely results for big data analytics, it is crucial to satisfy deadline requirements for MapReduce jobs in today＇s production environments. Much effort has been devoted to the problem of meeting deadlines, and typically there exist two kinds of solutions. The first is to allocate appropriate resources to complete the entire job before the specified time limit, where missed deadlines result because of tight deadline constraints or lack of resources; the second is to run a pre-constructed sample based on deadline constraints, which can satisfy the time requirement but fail to maximize the volumes of processed data. In this paper, we propose a deadline-oriented task scheduling approach, named ＇Dart＇, to address the above problem. Given a specified deadline and restricted resources, Dart uses an iterative estimation method, which is based on both historical data and job running status to precisely estimate the real-time job completion time. Based on the estimated time, Dart uses an approach-revise algorithm to make dynamic scheduling decisions for meeting deadlines while maximizing the amount of processed data and mitigating stragglers. Dart also efficiently handles task failures and data skew, protecting its performance from being harmed. We have validated our approach using workloads from OpenCloud and Facebook on a cluster of 64 virtual machines. The results show that Dart can not only effectively meet the deadline but also process near-maximum volumes of data even with tight deadlines and limited resources.

Stochastic extra-gradient based alternating direction methods for graph-guided regularized minimization

In this study, we propose and compare stochastic variants of the extra-gradient alternating direction method, named the stochastic extra-gradient alternating direction method with Lagrangian function（SEGL） and the stochastic extra-gradient alternating direction method with augmented Lagrangian function（SEGAL）, to minimize the graph-guided optimization problems, which are composited with two convex objective functions in large scale.A number of important applications in machine learning follow the graph-guided optimization formulation, such as linear regression, logistic regression, Lasso, structured extensions of Lasso, and structured regularized logistic regression. We conduct experiments on fused logistic regression and graph-guided regularized regression. Experimental results on several genres of datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other competing algorithms, and SEGAL has better performance than SEGL in practical use.
