Combustion of Aluminum nanoparticles(AlNPs) has long been investigated experimentally because of its use in various energetic formulations for propellants and explosives. But the limited spatio-temporal resolution in experiments in particular makes it challenging to explore the microstructural evolution of AlNPs oxidation and associated mechanisms. Here we perform large-scale reactive molecular dynamics simulations to study the structural evolution of AlNPs with 2-4 nm thick oxide shell in oxygen environment. We find the temporal hollowing processes of AlNPs for both symmetrical and asymmetrical oxidations, in which the morphological evolution can be understood by discrepant electric field and temperature distributions for different system. In the early time, core Aluminum atoms experience a fast reaction with oxide shell. Environmental oxygen does not react with AlNPs until the surface O/Al ratio decreases to ～1.2. Moreover, based on our simulation results, previous experimental data agree well with the proposed model, which can well describe the relationship between combustion efficiency and oxide shell thickness, reveling that oxide shell promotes other than hinders combustion of AlNPs. The molecular insights obtained here would be significant for understanding the underlying mechanism and further modelling of AlNPs combustion

Self-reconfigurable modular robots have shown great potential in carrying out multiple tasks in different conditions. A connection of both flexibility and reliability is critical for realizing the docking and transformation of the modular robots. We propose a new design of connectors based on SMA which has the advantages of high autonomy, small size and high speed. The couples of connectors consist of active and passive connector. In the active connector, a two-way rotary SMA actuator is used as the actuation mechanism. The double-layer cam and claws are used as an executive mechanism. The passive connector can be securely docked in five different facets for 3D reconfigurations. The multisensory system and hardware architecture provide the foundation for control strategies. The design and the prototype of the connector are described in this paper. Finally, experimental results to evaluate the performance of docking are presented.

To address the write performance problem suffered by MLC/TLC flash, researchers have proposed hybrid SSD that aims to combine the strengths of SLC flash, used as the write-buffer zone for its superior write performance, and MLC/TLC flash, as the capacity zone for its high storage density. While leveraging SLC as a physical write-buffer zone is proven effective in traditional 2D hybrid SSDs, how to effectively incorporate SLC into a 3D-stacked TLC to form a hybrid SSD has not been studied to the best of our knowledge. Yet this is a timely and important performance issue for 3D-stacked TLC given its one-shot programming scheme that results in much worse write performance than the programming scheme in 2D TLC where pages are associated with different bits of a cell and programmed in sequence separately. We believe that naively adopting the two-physical-zone approach to 3D hybrid SSD will miss a great opportunity for performance optimization because it ignores the inherent four-level parallelism (channel/chip/die/plane) of the flash chip array. To this end, we propose in this paper an SLC and Parallelism Aware hybrid SSD (SPA-SSD) to take full advantages of SLC's superior write performance, the internal multi-level parallelism of SSD, and the high storage density of 3D-stacked TLC flash. Two novel techniques enable SPA-SSD to be highly effective: (1) Type-Parallelism Joint Page Allocation (TPJ-PA), which allocates pages for write transactions according to not only available SLC pages but also parallelism to maximize resource utilization within the hybrid SSD, and (2) Queue-length and Parallelism Constrained Data Migration (QPC-DM), which triggers data migration without degrading user write performance by analyzing the device queue length and available flash resources. To evaluate performance of SPA-SSD, a hybrid SSD simulator, called HybridSim, is developed based on MQSim. Efficient and accurate locomotion mode recognition is the basis and the key to compliance control of exoskeleton. Considering the fact that single ground reaction force information can not realize continuous gait phase recognition in the whole gait cycle and traditional inertial sensors' installation method tends to cause binding error, this paper established a wearable gait analysis system based on inertial sensor and foot pressure sensor which entirely embedded in a shoe insole. An inertial sensor mounting structure for foot posture information acquisition was designed to reduces the binding errors caused by the uncertain binding position and the random errors caused by the relative position changes with the movement. Two force sensors was set to measure the force load on the shoe insole at the heel and the forefoot during walking. Then, the gait curve of the normal human beings measured by this wearable gait analysis system is segmented by a periodic segmentation method combining power spectrum and feature points, and features is extracted from the time series of sensor signals according to the characteristics of the human gait. Probabilistic neural network is used to identify the locomotion modes and to verify the effectiveness of this wearable gait analysis system, experiments on different terrains are performed. The experiment results show that this method can effectively reduce binding error and random error, and reflect the foot movement during walking. Furthermore, the measurement method can accurately and effectively identify level-ground walking, stair ascent and stair decent, showing great potential for further development and applicability in control of exoskeleton. © 2018 IEEE.

Most underwater robots use multiple sets of thrusters with motors and propellers to drive them independently that makes them bulky, inflexible and complex. In this paper, the propeller is innovatively designed that it can change the pitch that can be applied to underwater robots. The compact design, propeller response speed and high movement flexibility are the biggest advantage of this robot over current conventional designs. The movement of robot is controlled by three propellers and their rotations are driven by a common motor and each propeller is equipped with a servo to control the pitch. Transmission structure designed is symmetrical and compact that creates dynamic balance of the strong structure in itself. The retractable float completes the data transfer between the robot and the ground control also informs space assisted position of the robot when it is underwater and the float is outside of water. In addition, the robot also includes a matching electronic drive and remote control box. Basic movement requirements can be achieved through the independent and coordinated control of the three actuators of the robot. The actual underwater test of the robot verifies the flexibility and horizontal stability of the robot designed. The characteristics of carrying sensors in underwater robots to move more flexibly and effectiveness of the proposed control method is also verified in the actual water test. © 2018 IEEE.

The coupled complex-valued memristive neural networks (CCVMNNs) are investigated in this study. First, we analyze the passivity of the proposed network model by designing an appropriate controller and using certain inequalities as well as Lyapunov functional method, and provide a passivity condition for the considered CCVMNNs. In addition, a criterion for guaranteeing synchronization of this kind of network is established. Finally, the effectiveness and correctness of the acquired theoretical results are verified by a numerical example.

As a classical technique in storage systems, disk failure prediction aims at predicting impending disk failures in advance for high data reliability. Over the past decades, taking as input the SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting technology) attributes, many supervised machine learning algorithms have been proven to be effective for disk failure prediction. However, these approaches heavily rely on the availability of substantial annotated failed disk data which unfortunately exhibits an extreme data imbalance, i.e., the number of failed disks is much smaller than that of healthy ones, resulting in suboptimal performance and even inability at the beginning of their deployment, i.e., cold starting problem. Inspired by the significant success achieved in GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) based anomaly detection, in this paper, we translate disk failure prediction into an anomaly detection problem. Specifically, we develop a novel Semi-supervised method for lifelong disk failure Prediction via Adversarial training, called SPA. The distinguishing feature of SPA from existing supervised approaches is that SPA is only trained on healthy disks, which avoids the traditional limitations of imbalance in datasets and eliminates the cold starting problem. Furthermore, a novel 2D image-like representation technique is proposed to enable the deployment of deep learning techniques and the automatic feature extraction. Experimental results on real-world SMART datasets demonstrate that, compared with the state-of-the-art supervised machine learning based methods, our approach predicts disk failures at a higher accuracy for the entire lifetime of models, i.e., both the initial period and the long-term usage.

Solid-liquid-gas reactions are ubiquitous. An understanding of how gases influence the reactions at the nanoscale is significant for achieving the enhanced triple-phase reactions. Here, we report a real-time observation of the accelerated etching of gold nanorods with oxygen nanobubbles in aqueous hydrobromic acid using liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Our observation reveals that when an oxygen nanobubble is close to a nanorod below the critical distance (~1nm), the local etching rate is significantly enhanced with over an order of magnitude faster. Molecular dynamics simulations results show that the strong attractive van der Waals interaction between the gold nanorod and oxygen molecules facilitates the transport of oxygen through the thin liquid layer to the gold surface and thus plays a crucial role in increasing the etching rate. This result sheds light on the rational design of solid-liquid-gas reactions for enhanced activities. © 2020, CC BY.

Physical models simulating the radiative budget (RB) and remote sensing (RS) observation of three-dimensional (3D) landscapes are critical to better understand human and natural components of the Earth system and further develop RS technology. DART is one of the most comprehensive 3D models of Earth-atmosphere optical radiative transfer (RT), from ultraviolet (UV) to thermal infrared (TIR). It simulates the optical signal of proximal, aerial and satellite imaging spectrometers and laser scanners, the 3D RB and solar induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) signal, for any urban or natural landscape and any experimental or instrument configuration. It is freely available for research and teaching activities (https://***). Here, five recent advances are presented. 1) Atmosphere RT. 2) RT in non repetitive topography. 3) Monte Carlo modelling for fast RS image simulation of large landscapes. 4) SIF modelling for vegetation simulated as facets and turbid cells. 5) RS image inversion for mapping the optical properties of urban material and the urban radiative budget.

Mitophagy, particularly in the context of drugs that disrupt mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), represents a critical focus in pharmacology. However, the discovery and evaluation of MMP-disrupting drugs are often hampered using commercially available marker molecules that target similar or identical zones. These markers can significantly interfere with, obscure, or amplify the functional effects of MMP-targeting drugs, frequently leading to clinical failures. In response to this challenge, we propose a “one-two punch” drug design strategy that integrates both target-zone drug functionality and non-target zone biological reporting within a single small-molecule drug. We have developed a novel proof-of-concept mitophagy self-check drug ( MitoSC ) that exhibits dual-color and dual-localization properties. The functional component of this system is a variable MitoSC that disrupts mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) homeostasis, thereby inducing mitophagy. Upon activation, this component transforms into a blue-fluorescent monomer ( MitoSC-fun ) specifically within the mitochondrial target zone. Concurrently, the biological reporting component is represented by a red-fluorescent monomer ( MitoSC-rep ) that localizes to lysosomes, the non-target zone. As mitophagy progresses, the fluorescent signals from MitoSC-rep (lysosomes) and MitoSC-fun (mitochondria) converge, enabling real-time monitoring of the mitophagic process. This strategy combines potent drug functionality with robust biological reporting, thereby minimizing interference and eliminating the complexities associated with external detection. Our findings underscore the potential of a single-molecule drug to exert target-zone specific actions while simultaneously providing non-target zone self-checking, offering a new perspective for drug design.
