Improving the ductility of laser directed energy deposited borated stainless steel by increasing laser power

Borated stainless steels (BSSs) are extensively applied in the nuclear energy industry due to boron's excellent thermal neutron absorption capacity, but large and brittle borides formed during casting result in a low ductility. Here, a BSS was produced by laser directed energy deposition, and an investigation was conducted to analyze the impact of laser power on both the microstructure and mechanical properties of the deposited material. Fibrous borides with relatively low volume fraction in the overlapping zone resulted in higher ductility, while lamellar borides with relatively large volume fraction in the non-overlapping zone led to higher strength. As the laser power increased from 180 W to 330 W, the size of fibrous and lamellar eutectic borides and austenite increased significantly, the width of the soft overlapping zone increased by 2.27 times, and the elongation increased by 2.03 times, although yield strength and ultimate tensile strength decreased by 46.3 % and 31.7 %, respectively. As a result, these findings confirmed the feasibility of significantly improving the ductility of the as-deposited BSS by increasing the laser power. The work here provides a way to tailoring the mechanical properties of BSS produced by laser additive manufacturing. © 2025 The Society of Manufacturing Engineers

Listen with Seeing: Cross-modal Contrastive Learning for Audio-Visual Event Localization

In real-world physiological and psychological scenarios, there often exists a robust complementary correlation between audio and visual signals. Audio-Visual Event Localization (AVEL) aims to identify segments with Audio-Visual Events (AVEs) that contain both audio and visual tracks in unconstrained videos. Prior studies have predominantly focused on audio-visual cross-modal fusion methods, overlooking the fine-grained exploration of the cross-modal information fusion mechanism. Moreover, due to the inherent heterogeneity of multi-modal data, inevitable new noise is introduced during the audio-visual fusion process. To address these challenges, we propose a novel Cross-modal Contrastive Learning Network (CCLN) for AVEL, comprising a backbone network and a branch network. In the backbone network, drawing inspiration from physiological theories of sensory integration, we elucidate the process of audio-visual information fusion, interaction, and integration from an information-flow perspective. Notably, the Self-constrained Bi-modal Interaction (SBI) module is a bi-modal attention structure integrated with audio-visual fusion information, and through gated processing of the audio-visual correlation matrix, it effectively captures inter-modal correlation. The Foreground Event Enhancement (FEE) module emphasizes the significance of event-level boundaries by elongating the distance between scene events during training through adaptive weights. Furthermore, we introduce weak video-level labels to constrain the cross-modal semantic alignment of audio-visual events and design a weakly supervised cross-modal contrastive learning loss (WCCL Loss) function, which enhances the quality of fusion representation in the dual-branch contrastive learning framework. Launch dynamics modeling and simulation of box-type multiple launch rocket system considering plane clearance contact

As the performance of the box-type multiple launch rocket system (BMLRS) improves, its mechanical structures, particularly the plane clearance design between the slider on the rocket and the guide inside the launch canister, have grown increasingly complex. However, deficiencies still exist in the current launch modeling theory for BMLRS. In this study, a multi-rigid-flexible-body launch dynamics model coupling the launch platform and rocket was established using the multibody system transfer matrix method and the Newton-Euler formulation. Furthermore, considering the bending of the launch canister, a detection algorithm for slider-guide plane clearance contact was proposed. To quantify the contact force and friction effect between the slider and guide, the contact force model and modified Coulomb model were introduced. Both the modal and launch tests were conducted. Additionally, the modal convergence was verified. By comparing the modal experiments and simulation results, the maximum relative error of the eigenfrequency is 3.29%. thereby verifying the accuracy of the developed BMLRS dynamics model. Furthermore, the launch test validated the proposed plane clearance contact model. Moreover, the study investigated the influence of various model parameters on the dynamic characteristics of BMLRS, including launch canister bending stiffness, slider and guide material, slider-guide clearance, slider length and layout. This analysis of influencing factors provides a foundation for future optimization in BMLRS design. © 2024 China Ordnance Society

Relative Localizability and Localization for Multirobot systems

Inter-robot relative positions are crucial for executing various multirobot missions, such as formation maneuvering and collaborative inspection. However, the current sensing technology usually provides part of relative position information, such as inter-robot distances, bearings and angles. This prompts the study of determining inter-robot relative positions, i.e., relative localization, from these partial measurements. Based on the existing results of static networks' localizability and mobile robots' relative localization, we propose a novel concept, relative localizability to describe whether a multirobot system is relatively localizable. Given each robot's self-displacement measurements and inter-robot partial measurements in d (d ≤ 4) sampling instants, we show that a multirobot system's relative localization can be achieved in a purely algebraic and distributed manner, in which the multirobot system is said to be d-step relatively localizable. To make the results more general, we consider that the multirobot system consists of landmarks, leaders, and followers, and that the inter-robot measurements can be distances, bearings or angles. When robots' coordinate frames have different orientations, we show that the given local measurements can be used to determine robots' relative positions and their coordinate frames' relative orientations simultaneously. Simulations and experiments of relative localization for ground robots are conducted to validate the obtained results. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

AdaptHM: A Fully Adaptive Data Migration Strategy for Hybrid Memory systems

Data migration strategies (DMSs) improve the overall performance of hybrid memory systems by migrating frequently accessed (hot) data to faster memory. However, designing an efficient DMS is challenging since the key metrics of DMS - hot data selection, migration granularity, and migration frequency - are sensitive to access patterns of workloads. Most existing strategies focus on only one of these metrics and often overlook the crucial impact of access patterns, resulting in suboptimal performance and unnecessary migration traffic. In this article, we propose AdaptHM, a fully access-pattern-aware Adaptive DMS for Hybrid Memory systems. AdaptHM achieves adaptability on all three metrics through its unique multilevel data framework. First, AdaptHM adopts a group-level competition policy to select hot blocks, which responds faster to access patterns than threshold-based policies. Second, AdaptHM enables segment-level dynamic migration granularity by decoupling migration from remapping, which shows better-access pattern resilience than existing schemes with fixed-size global migration granularity. Third, AdaptHM adjusts the migration frequency at set-level by periodically assessing the migration benefit, avoiding unnecessary migrations. Experimental results demonstrate that AdaptHM improves the performance by an average of 12.78% and reduces energy consumption by up to 37.24% compared to the state-of-the-art scheme. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

Friction stir welding (FSW) has been applied for welding dissimilar materials in advanced manufacturing industries such as shipbuilding, automotive and aerospace. For the broad popularization of adhesive in FSW, the innovative coupling method of friction stir welding-adhesive bonding (FSW-AB) technology was designed to join 5A06 aluminum alloy to 304 stainless steel. The joints were fabricated using a single-component structural adhesive applied manually in the pre-lap zone. The joints were then cured by the heat generated from FSW. Macrostructure, defect generation and tensile shear performances of the joints obtained using three different rotation speeds and different adhesive thickness were studied. The adhesive prevented direct plate contact, but the FSW-AB joint showed more flash. Adhesive expansion occurred on the advancing side due to structural asymmetry and uneven heat dissipation. Compared to conventional FSW, the joints produced by FSW-AB exhibited significantly reduced hook defects in the pin-affected zone, a smoother distribution of hardness across the weld cross-section, and notably elevated hardness on the retreating side of the base metal outside the shoulder. It is attributed to the difference in the degree of crystallization between the two caused by the difference in heat dissipation rate. The ultimate tensile shear load of the FSW-AB joint reached 93.3 % of the conventional FSW joint at 1200 rpm stirring speed and 0.25 mm adhesive thickness. Furthermore, the fracture modes of FSW-AB joints were mainly normal fracture and shear fracture. © 2025 The Society of Manufacturing Engineers

Multi-level Multi-task representation learning with adaptive fusion for multimodal sentiment analysis

Multimodal sentiment analysis is an active task in multimodal intelligence, which aims to compute the user’s sentiment tendency from multimedia data. Generally, each modality is a specific and necessary perspective to express human sentiment, providing complementary and consensus information unavailable in a single modality. Nevertheless, the heterogeneous multimedia data often contain inconsistent and conflicting sentiment semantics that limits the model performance. In this work, we propose a Multi-level Multi-task Representation Learning with Adaptive Fusion (MuReLAF) network to bridge the semantic gap among different modalities. Specifically, we design a modality adaptive fusion block to adjust modality contributions dynamically. Besides, we build a multi-level multimodal representations framework to obtain modality-specific and modality-shared semantics by the multi-task learning strategy, where modality-specific semantics contain complementary information and modality-shared semantics include consensus information. Extensive experiments are conducted on four publicly available datasets: MOSI, MOSEI, SIMS, and SIMSV2(s), demonstrating that our model exhibits superior or comparable performance to state-of-the-art models. The achieved accuracies are 86.28%, 86.07%, 84.46%, and 82.78%, respectively, showcasing improvements of 0.82%, 0.84%, 1.75%, and 1.83%. Surface-PMSM Sensorless Control Strategy Based on Reduced-Order Linear Kalman Filter Cooperating with Prediction Error Rolling Compensation

Kalman filter (KF) is increasingly attracted for sensorless control of surface permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSMs) due to its strong robustness against measurement and system noise. However, conventional method suffers from poor position and speed estimation accuracy under dynamic conditions, and high computational cost. In order to solve these problems, an enhanced sensorless control strategy based on reduced-order linear Kalman filter (RLKF) cooperating with prediction error rolling compensation is introduced in this paper. Differing from conventional method, a reduced-order linear state equation encompassing rotor position, speed and torque disturbance is constructed. Then, by obtaining the prediction error of system output using the motor current equation in the predictive reference frame, the optimal estimation of rotor position and speed in KF algorithm is achieved based on the reduced-order model. This not only simplifies the calculation process, but also enhances the position and speed estimation accuracy under dynamic conditions. Meanwhile, a prediction error rolling compensation algorithm is developed to minimize the estimation deviations caused by motor parameters variations. Additionally, the system's dynamic performance is further improved with an adopted speed controller based on torque disturbance feedforward and acceleration feedback. Finally, experimental results verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed strategy.1 © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Graphene and related materials are emerging revolutionary materials due to fascinating stimuli-responsive physiochemical properties having widespread applications in developing advanced nano-systems for detection, diagnostics, and therapeutics in biomedical fields. Various materials like metal nanoparticles, polymers, dyes, drugs, and proteins could be combined yielding graphene-based composite materials (GBCMs) to synergistically fulfill different biomedical requirements. The 2D conjugated structure, easy surface functionalization via covalent or van der Waal interactions, and combination with different components for versatile functionalities altogether contribute to the development of GBCM for healthcare applications. This review specifically focuses on GBCMs and discusses specific material properties relevant to their material applications in healthcare. Furthermore, the synthesis, toxicity, and biocompatibility of these GBCMs, and their interactions with biological materials are thoroughly discussed. Importantly, the recent cutting-edge applications in the field of healthcare, including its role in the development of antibacterial, anti-viral, and photothermal therapies, wound healing, drug delivery, neurodegenerative disease therapy, and biosensing based on GBCMs are well-updated. Additionally, the applications of GBCMs in point-of-care devices, wearable electronics, and tissue engineering are well summarized. We hope this review opens up more possibilities to design more innovative healthcare materials derived from graphene. © 2025 The Authors
