Owing to the unique technological merits of additive manufacturing (AM), design for AM, particularly eco-design for AM, has been gaining attention in improving the sustainable performance of AM-fabricated (AMed) parts. The main challenge in harvesting potential sustainability benefits is how to capture the impact of design on sustainable performance. Though several existing studies adopted quantitative evaluation on AM sustainability and investigated the relationships between design information and sustainability information of AMed part, the sustainability information is still unavailable in the design phase. This hardly guides eco-design for AM in practice. To support the increasing industrial applications of AM, this paper illustrates related knowledge, that is, material-process-structure-ecoProperty (MPSeP) relationships to connect design and sustainability information in eco-design for AM. An ontology-based method is proposed to model the MPSeP relationships of the AMed part in a structured way. An example of an AMed hydraulic valve body was used to demonstrate the MPSeP modeling process. It is discussed that how the constructed model effectively assists AM designers through providing eco-design recommendation, and enables design software tools to perform sustainability analysis towards eco-design for AM. © 2024 The Author(s).

A Micromagnetic-Mechanically Coupled Phase-Field Model for Fracture and Fatigue of Magnetostrictive Alloys

Magnetostrictive alloys are usually brittle materials with micromagnetic structures. Their structural reliability and durability depend on the complex micromagnetic-mechanical coupling at smaller length scales encompassing the evolution of micromagnetic structures. Herein we propose a micromagnetic-mechanically coupled phase-field model for fracture and fatigue behavior of magnetostrictive alloys with evolution of the micromagnetic structure. The thermodynamically-consistent model is derived from microforce theory, laws of thermodynamics, and Coleman–Noll analysis. The evolution of crack phase-field and magnetization-vector order parameters that are fully coupled is governed by history field dependent Allen–Cahn and Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equations, respectively. The model is extended to fatigue by introducing a degradation prefactor for the fracture energy as a function of positive elastic energy. One-dimensional analyses are then presented to anatomize the crack driving forces in terms of fully coupled micromagnetic-mechanical and pure mechanical driving force. We demonstrate the model capabilities by finite-element numerical studies on the micromagnetic domain evolution during the crack propagation and the influence of external magnetic field for type-I, type-II, and three-point bending fracture, as well as for the fracture of a single-edge notched specimen with an elliptical inclusion. The simulation result shows that depending on how micromagnetic domains are switched under micromagnetic-mechanical coupling, the magnetic field can enhance or decrease the critical load. In the presence of inclusion with larger fracture toughness, a crack is found to nucleate in the tri-junction of multi-domain micromagnetic structure owing to the high elastic strain around the tri-junction point. It is further found that a suitable magnetic field promoting magnetization-vector rotation around the crack tip could remarkably improve the fracturing load and fatigue life. The resul

The predictions of the multiple-regime flows from continuum regime to free molecular regime are crucial for the aerodynamic design in a large number of engineering applications,such as the near-space craft,the ultra-low orbit spacecraft and the micro-electro-mechanical systems(MEMS).Since the essence of this multiple-regime problem is a complex system composed by different scales and mechanics,the modeling and numerical prediction of these multiple-regime flows are very challenging at both theoretical and practical ***,the single flow field with multiple flow regimes will make the problem extremly ***,this typical flow field is very common in hypersonic application and important for the development of multiple-regime *** the other hand,both the constructions of the low density wind tunnel with high enthalpy and the high altitude flight experiment are also very challenging at the present ***,the researches on the multiple-regime flows and the corresponding complex science hit a worldwide *** paper reviews the breakthroughs in the computational methods for multiple-regime flows in the last ten years,which can be used as numerical experimental tools for studying the multiple-scale flow mechanism and providing data for aerodynamic designs and thermal *** paper focuses on the progress of the unified wave-particle methods established in recent years,which are proved to be both accurate and efficient for multiple-regime flows with extremly high speed.

Due to the particularity of nuclear reactor, it is difficult to adjust the controller parameters by experiment. The simulation calculation inevitably simplifies the actual model. The controller parameters tuned by this model is likely to cause poor performance due to model mismatch. Therefore, the research on the adaptability of the controller to model mismatch has guiding significance for engineering application. In this paper, a once through steam generator(OTSG) for small lead bismuth fast reactor(SLBFR) is established and verified, and the presented model is simplified by three different methods. Internal model control(IMC) and IMC-PID controllers are designed based on the simplified models. With the increase of λ , IMC-PID controller becomes insensitive to model mismatch caused by model linearization, non-minimum phase characteristics, noise and time delay, and has high robustness to model mismatch. However, the robustness to model sacrifices the sensitivity of the system. In the study of rapid power reduction, it is found that large λ will lead to conservative control output, and then make the control performance worse. Through the research of this paper, Method 1 is recommended, and λ is selected between 5 and 10 to design feedwater IMC-PID controller for OTSG of SLBFR. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF), which is aiming at upgrading safety characteristics of nuclear fuel and cladding under design basis and design extension conditions, has drawn more and more attention since Fukushima accident. By virtue of improved basic properties and oxidation resistance comparing with conventional UO2-Zr, UN(Particle)/Zr(Matrix) fuel pin and SiC cladding (UN/Zr-SiC) is expected to slow down accident progression and to provide wider margin of coping time. In present paper, the improved performance of UN/Zr-SiC fuel system on the Large Break Loss-Of-Coolant-Accident (LB LOCA) is analyzed by Appendix K version of ARSAC code (ARSAC-K). For this reason, the corresponding models in ARSAC-K are modified to achieve the goal: 1) thermal physical properties of SiC;2) equivalent thermal physical properties of UN/Zr composite fuel;3) passive oxidation model of SiC under pure steam condition based on modified Deal-Grove model together with linear volatilization model of SiO2 based on heat/mass transfer analogy. Obtained quantitative results show promising safety enhancement in terms of peak cladding temperature (PCT): the PCT of UN/Zr-SiC fuel is much lower than that of UO2-Zr fuel. Then due to the great safety margin of UN/Zr-SiC fuel under LB LOCA condition, an exploratory investigation of the reduction of safety injection capacity and the increase of reactor nominal power under LB LOCA condition is presented. The results show that from the LB LOCA point of view, UN/Zr-SiC fuel has the potential can to be utilized to reduce safety injection capacity or increase reactor nominal power without reducing the safety margin. Therefore, UN/Zr-SiC fuel is demonstrated to have positive effects on safety and capability of reactor design optimization. On the Theory of Atomic Relaxation in Twisted Van Der Waals Bilayers with Out-of-Plane Deformation

The effects of out-of-plane deformation on atomic relaxation in twisted van der Waals bilayers are investigated by comprehensive multiscale modeling and simulations. The model integrates the DFT-informed generalized stacking-fault energy for interlayer interaction between layers and the Föppl–von Kármán plate theory for elastic energy in each layer with minimization of the total free energy for atomic relaxation governed by a gradient flow method. Our simulation results elucidate twist-angle dependent moiré pattern, strain field, tortional displacement field and stacking domain structures, in good agreement with recent experimental observations. In particular, we derive the strain soliton solution at a small twist angle and the elastic solution at a large twist angle for the reconstructed van der Waals bilayer with out-of-plane deformation. These results show that out-of-plane deformation not only narrows the strain soliton width but also induces substantial alterations in the strain field, local rotation, and stacking structures. Our findings reveal the pivotal role played by out-of-plane deformation in the atomic relaxation of twisted van der Waals bilayers, particularly at smaller twist angles. The intricate interplay between in-plane atomic relaxation and out-of-plane deformation provides opportunities for strain engineering in twisted van der Waals bilayers. © 2024, The Authors. Development of the Expanding Mandrel Test Facility for Investigation of Zircaloy Cladding Performance Under Loading Strain Rate Similar to Power Ramp

The in-pile pellet-cladding interaction (PCI) is the one of challenging problems for conventional UO2-Zicaloy fuel systems, which can threaten the integrity of the fuel rod and lead to the release of fission product. Currently, several experiments and numerical studies have been devoted to PCI analysis. However, attributing the lacking of experimental data with high fidelity, the development, and validation of the PCI analysis model is not sufficient. In this study, an expanding mandrel test facility has been developed to investigate PCI behaviors, where the digital image correlation (DIC) measuring system was introduced to online monitor the displacements/strain of cladding outer surface with improved fidelity. In addition, the oxygen content measurement system was employed to identify the failure of cladding. Subsequently, the expanding mandrel test facility was leveraged to investigate the PCI performance of three types of cladding (e.g. N36 cladding, recrystallized Zircaloy4 cladding, and M5 cladding) under both with/without iodine corrosion and cladding real-time strain, failure time and failure strain were recorded. Then, performance comparisons among these claddings were completed and discussed. The results show that the established facility can be applied to expanding mandrel tests under varied theoretical loading strain rates (10~60%/h) and the working environment temperature can reach 350 . Meanwhile, there are three distinct stages for the deformed Zicaloy cladding during the expanding mandrel test. The comparison results suggest that recrystallized Zircaloy4 cladding shows the largest cladding failure strain with/without iodine corrosion under 20%/h theoretical loading strain, while M5 cladding and N36 cladding present considerable performance without iodine corrosion effect. In addition, N36 and recrystallized Zircaloy4 cladding seems more iodine corrosion resistant than that for M5 cladding, which can be beneficial for its in-pile performance. Besides,

A pressurizer degassing sub-system is designed in Module Small reactor(ACP100), which can be used to vent the noncondensable gas dissolved in reactor Coolant during plant shutdown period by opening the remote degassing valve installed on top of the pressurizer. In order to verify the transient characteristic during the whole degassing process, a dedicated transient degassing program is developed based on the improved non-equilibrium multi-region model and the transient degassing model, which is used then to carry out a simulation analysis on this process. Also, the boundary condition models including pressurizer heater power model, pressure spray model, surge line flow model and critical flow model for degassing valve are established. The simulation results show that, under ultimate condition of hot-zero power operation, during the whole degassing process, the Pressurizer's pressure drops to a maximum 0.038MPa, and the water level is raised 0.0637m above the normal level, which means, both of the pressure and water level are within the normal operation band and shall not initiate any safety signal. Meanwhile, the whole transient process lasts about 16 minutes, and then it enters into the stable degassing period. The gas concentration vs time curve is very smooth. It takes about 5.8 hours to remove the gas dissolved in reactor Coolant from 35 ml(STP)/kg to 15 ml(STP)/kg. The analysis shows the Pressurizer Degassing Sub-system is safety, effectively and reliable. Copyright © 2020 ASME

In the field of railway transportation, with the continuous improvement of train running speed and the continuous increase of operating mileage, it becomes particularly important to ensure the safety and integrity of small-target infrastructure along the railway train. Although many small-target detection methods have been proposed, the research on small-target infrastructure detection along rail trains is very rare. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a small-target infrastructure detection network with spatial tracking and multi-level feature extraction based on Yolov8n. The experimental results show that ST-YOLO has a 3.6% mAP improvement on the OSDaR23 dataset compared to the baseline Yolov8n, and shows significant advantages over other state-of-the-art methods.
