Byte-addressable non-volatile memory (NVM) is emerging as an alternative for main memory. Non-volatile main memory (NVMM) systems are required to support atomic persistence and deal with the high overhead of programming NVM cells. To this end, recent studies propose hardware logging and data encoding designs for NVMM systems. However, prior hardware logging designs incur either extra ordering constraints or redundant log data. Moreover, existing data encoding designs are unaware of the characteristics of log data, resulting in writing unnecessary log *** this paper, we propose a morphable hardware logging design (MorLog) that only logs the data necessary for recovery and dynamically selects encoding methods with least write overhead. We observe that (1) only the oldest undo and the newest redo data in each transaction are necessary for recovery, and (2) the log data for clean bits are clean. The first motivates our morphable logging mechanism. This mechanism logs both undo and redo data for the first update to the data in a transaction, and then logs only redo data. Undo data are eagerly written to NVMM to ensure atomicity, while redo data are buffered in a volatile log buffer and L1 caches to write only the newest redo data to NVMM. The second motivates our selective log data encoding mechanism. This mechanism simultaneously encodes log data with different methods, and writes the encoded log data with the least write cost to NVMM. We devise a differential log data compression method to exploit the characteristics of log data. This method directly discards clean bits from log data and compresses remained dirty bits. Our evaluation shows that MorLog improves performance by 72.5%, reduces NVMM write traffic by 41.1%, and decreases NVMM write energy by 49.9% compared with the state-of-the-art design.

A fundamental understanding of the mechanical behaviors and deformation mechanism of materials subjected to dynamic loading is critical for developing outstanding structural materials. This work focuses on the experimental investigation into the dynamic mechanical behaviors, deformation mechanisms, and damage characteristics of single-crystal NiAlCo which was regarded as a potential structure material at high pressure and strain rate. The shock responses of the single-crystal NiAlCo alloy were tested over a range of shock pressure from 10 to 50 GPa at a strain rate of 105/s utilizing the technique of magnetically driven high-velocity flyer plates on high pulsed power generator CQ-4. Based on the analyses of free surface velocity profiles, a linear Hugoniot relationship between shock wave speed and particle velocity was obtained, and the spall strength gradually increased from 2.61 GPa to 6.98 GPa with increasing shock pressure. The yield strength was calculated from the Hugoniot elastic limit, and it reaches 1.80 GPa over the wide range of shock pressure. Further, the relationship between dynamic strength and strain rate was depicted by empirical formulas in power exponential form. Finally, the detailed transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) microscopic characterization results of recovered samples disclose that single-crystal NiAlCo have abundant micro-deformation mechanisms under high pressure and high strain rate, including dislocation tangle, high-density stacking faults, and Lomer-Cottrell locks. The results show that both spall and yield strength are significantly higher than those of most alloys, exhibiting superior mechanical properties, which may be attributed to the coupling of multiple deformation mechanisms. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

In this paper, a heat-electricity energy conversion strategy based on thermoelectric theory in permanent magnet electrodynamic wheel (PMEDW) magnetic levitation (Maglev) vehicle system is proposed and tested for the first time. The PMEDW-Maglev vehicle is based on electromagnetic induction interaction principle between PMEDW and conductor plate, to generate levitation force and propulsion force. Hence, the PMEDW-Maglev vehicle is a new concept with levitation-propulsion multifunctional integrated design, to supply the faster, greener, smarter highway transportation mode. But, the temperature rise in conductor plate may cause the levitation failure and reduce the system operation stability. Hence, considering energy effective conservation and utilization, the thermoelectric theory based heat-electricity energy conversion strategy is proposed in this paper, to utilize the heat generated by temperature rise and improve system operation performance. The operation performance of PMEDW-Maglev prototype vehicle with the heat-electricity energy conversion strategy is tested by the experiment. It can be found from the experimental results that, the proposed heat-electricity energy conversion strategy can operate as expected. The levitation force and temperature rise cooling ratio in conductor plate can be improved by more than 47 % and 12 %, respectively, besides, the heat can be converted into electricity energy and stored in battery unit (more than 280 J). The significance of this work is that the proposed heat-electricity energy conversion strategy can offer a performance enhancement and energy self consistency design method for the future PMEDW-Maglev vehicle system. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

—In clinical practice, electroencephalography (EEG) plays an important role in the diagnosis of epilepsy. EEG-based computer-aided diagnosis of epilepsy can greatly improve the accuracy of epilepsy detection while reducing the workload of physicians. However, there are many challenges in practical applications for personalized epileptic EEG detection (i.e., training of detection model for a specific person), including the difficulty in extracting effective features from one single view, the undesirable but common scenario of lacking sufficient training data in practice, and the no guarantee of identically distributed training and test data. To solve these problems, we propose a TSK fuzzy system-based epilepsy detection algorithm that integrates multi-view collaborative transfer learning. To address the challenge due to the limitation of single-view features, multi-view learning ensures the diversity of features by extracting them from different views. The lack of training data for building a personalized detection model is tackled by leveraging the knowledge from the source domain (reference scene) to enhance the performance of the target domain (current scene of interest), where mismatch of data distributions between the two domains is resolved with adaption technique based on maximum mean discrepancy. Notably, the transfer learning and multi-view feature extraction are performed at the same time. Furthermore, the fuzzy rules of the TSK fuzzy system equip the model with strong fuzzy logic inference capability. Hence, the proposed method has the potential to detect epileptic EEG signals effectively, which is demonstrated with the positive results from a large number of experiments on the CHB-MIT dataset. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Lots of porous carbon materials, including boron-containing carbon (BC) and isostatic pressure graphite (IG-110), are used in high-temperature gas cooled reactor (HTGR). To prevent corrosion caused by carbon-water reaction at high temperature, water absorbed in the materials needs to be removed before the reactor operation. It has become the consensus of the researchers that the pore morphology of the material has an important influence on the physical adsorption and desorption process of the gas. Therefore, it is significant to explore the migration mechanism of moisture in carbon materials by studying the pore characteristics and hydrophilic properties of the material surface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angles tests were used to study the surface pore characteristic and hydrophilicity of BC and IG-110. The results of SEM scanning show that a large number of irregular micropores and cracks were found on the surface of BC, while the structure of IG-110 was more compact, and the size and number of pores were obviously smaller. 3 μL and 5 μL water drops were used to contact angle tests, it was found that the average contact angle of the BC surface with water droplets is 118.04°, which is greater than that of IG-110, measured as 112°. Finally, the water vapor absorption experiment of these two materials were carried out to verify that the pore structure and hydrophilicity have an effect on water absorption, and the pore structure has a more decisive effect on moisture absorption than the hydrophilicity. © 2019 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Active control and manipulation of electromagnetic waves are highly desirable for advanced photonic device technology, such as optical cloaking, active camouflage and information processing. designing optical resonators with high ease-of-control and reconfigurability remains a open challenge thus far. Here we propose a novel mechanism to continuously reconfigure an optical resonator between one-port and two-port configurations via phase-change material for efficient optical modulation. By incorporating a phase-change material VO2 substrate into a photonic crystal optical resonator, we computationally show that the system behaves as a one-port device with near-perfect absorption and two-port device with high transmission up to 92% when VO2 is in the metallic rutile phase and insulating monoclinic phase, respectively. The optical response can be continuously and reversibly modulated between various intermediate states. More importantly, the proposed device is compatible with wide-angle operation and is robust against structural distortion. Our findings reveal a novel device architecture of port reconfigurable optical resonator uniquely enabled by switchable optical properties of phase change material. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. This paper investigates the seismic performance of a high-rise molten-salt solar tower by finite element modelling. The integrated and separated models for solar tower based on the concrete damage plastic model are validated by matching the behaviour of similar reinforced concrete chimney specimens. The modal analysis demonstrates the first four modes of the solar tower are translational vibration. Seismic simulations are developed through the incremental dynamic analysis. The most disadvantageous position of the tower is all concentrated in the opening section under multidirectional seismic excitations. The top displacement of the tower under bidirectional and three-directional earthquake actions is larger than that under unidirectional earthquake actions. The results of the seismic vulnerability assessment show that when the PGA equals to 0.035g, the tower will be intact;when the PGA equals to 0.1g (design peak ground acceleration), the probability of the moderate damage state is within 1.5%;when the PGA equals to 0.22g (maximum considered earthquake), the probability of the destruction state is below 0.7%. The seismic partitioned fragility analysis of the tower under multidirectional earthquake excitations illustrates that there are two peaks in the vulnerability surfaces. The anti-collapse analysis indicates the tower has a good seismic performance under multidirectional seismic excitations. © The Authors, published by EDP sciences, 2020.

This paper introduces a linear induction motor with segmented power supply, which transforms the electric energy into the kinetic energy of the load movement in electromagnetic launch system. Based on the characteristics of electromagnetic emission mode, a special electromagnetic force analysis method of the motor is proposed. Firstly, considering secondary edge leakage, based on the principle of port equivalence, the equivalent circuit model is modified, and the calculation method of normal electromagnetic force of linear induction motor which is suitable for aperiodic transient operation in electromagnetic emission situation is analyzed. The accuracy of the method is verified by the finite element software. Secondly, combined with the kinematic model of Newton's second law, the relationship between the magnitude of electromagnetic force and the time of the stator in each section of the motor in the launching process is analyzed in detail, which lays the foundation for the dynamic response analysis and structural optimization design of the subsequent launching device.
