Photodegradation of hydroxyfluorenes in ice and water: A comparison of kinetics, effects of water constituents, and phototransformation by-products

The photochemical behavior of organic pollutants in ice is poorly studied in comparison to aqueous *** we report a detailed comparison of ice and aqueous photodegradation of two representative OH-PAHs,2-hydroxyfluorene(2-OHFL)and 9-hydroxyfluorene(9-OHFL),which are newly recognized contaminants in the wider environment including colder ***,their photodegradation kinetics were clearly influenced by whether they reside in ice or *** the same simulated solar irradiation(λ>290 nm),OHFLs photodegraded faster in ice than in equivalent aqueous solutions and this was attributed to the specific concentration effect caused by ***,the presence of dissolved constituents in ice also influenced photodegradation with 2-OHFL phototransforming the fastest in‘seawater’ice(k=(11.4±1.0)×10^(−2) min^(−1))followed by‘pure-water’ice((8.7±0.4)×10^(−2) min^(−1))and‘freshwater’ice((8.0±0.7)×10^(−2) min^(−1)).The presence of dissolved constituents(specifically Cl^(−),NO_(3)^(−),Fe(Ⅲ)and humic acid)influences the phototransformation kinetics,either enhancing or suppressing phototransformation,but this is based on the quantity of the constituent present in the matrixes,the specific OHFL isomer and the matrix type(e.g.,ice or aqueous solution).Careful derivation of key photointermediates was undertaken in both ice and water samples using tandem mass *** phototransformation exhibited fewer by-products and‘simpler’pathways giving rise to a range of hydroxylated fluorenes and hydroxylated fluorenones in *** results are of importance when considering the fate of PAHs and OH-PAHs in cold regions and their persistence in sunlit ice.

Achieving low friction and wear of poly(phenylene sulfide)(PPS) without using fillers or blending is a challenging task, but one of considerable practical importance. Here we describe how neat PPS with high tribological performance is achieved by manipulating processing parameters(pressure, flow and temperature). The key to achieving high tribological performance is comparatively high molecular chain orientation, realized in neat PPS, at high shear rates and low pressure. The friction coefficient and wear rate are as low as ~0.3 and~10^(-6) mm^(3)·N^(-1)·m^(-1), respectively, which break the record for neat PPS. These values are even better than those for PPS-based blends and comparable to PPS composites. Further studies show, for the first time, that wear rate decreases exponentially with increasing molecular chain orientation, prompting us to revise the classical Archard's law by including the effect of molecular chain orientation. These findings open the possibility of using neat PPS in highly demanding tribological applications.

A framework for upscaling aboveground biomass from an individual tree to landscape level and qualifying the multiscale spatial uncertainties for secondary forests

Secondary forests,a typical forest type in the sub-frigid zone of Northeast China,have significant potential for carbon *** estimation of the Aboveground Biomass(AGB)of secondary forests and assessment of multiscale uncertainties are crucial for promoting Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and *** study developed a novel framework to upscale the AGB estimation from the tree to the landscape level and assessed multiscale uncertainties based on multi-platform laser scanning data and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV)hyperspectral *** framework included two stages:(1)quantifying multiple uncertainties(uncertainties of individual tree crown delineation,individual tree para-meters estimation,and tree species classification)in individual tree-based AGB estimation using Monte Carlo simulations;(2)upscaling the plot to the landscape level estimated AGB using the Nonlinear Simultaneous Equation(NSE)with error-in-variables and quantifying the uncertainties of model residuals,model parameters,and model independent *** findings revealed a high accuracy from tree to plot AGB estimation(R2:0.75,Root Mean Square Error(RMSE):6.65 Mg/ha,relative RMSE(rRMSE):5.40%),with the total and relative uncertain-ties of 16.85 Mg/ha and 16.29%,respectively,with the highest uncertainty(9.73 Mg/ha)observed in tree species *** AGB estimation using NSE achieved an R2 of 0.69,with an RMSE of 9.91 Mg/ha and an rRMSE of 10.43%from the plot to landscape level;and the uncertainties caused by model parameters,independent variables,and residuals were 5.52 Mg/ha,14.56 Mg/ha,and 25.25 Mg/ha,respectively,accounting for 3.46%,24.09%,and 72.45%of the total *** study develops a framework for large-scale AGB estimation of mixed forests based on the individual tree approach and uncertainty quantification of multiscale estimates and provides a foundation for precise forestry,sustainable forest management,and carbon neutrality.

Plastic pollution as a global environmental issue has become a research hotspot,among which the removal of inherent plasticizer(e.g.,phthalic acid esters,PAEs)received increasing ***,the effects of biochars derived from different feedstocks on the adsorption of PAEs are poorly ***,the characteristics of biochars derived from six largely produced biomass wastes in China at 400°C,as well as their performance in adsorption of diethyl phthalate(DEP),one of frequently detected PAEs in aqueous environment,were *** results indicated that the variation in feedstock type showed significant changes in the properties(e.g.,porosity,specific surface area,surface functional groups)of biochars,which affected DEP adsorption and *** order and Freundlich models fitted the adsorption data well,and adsorption mechanisms mainly included hydrophobic effect,followed by micropore filling,hydrogen bonding,andπ-πEDA *** thermodynamics revealed that the adsorption was a spontaneous and exothermic the adsorption capacities of DEP on these biochars slightly decreased with the increasing pH but increased with the increasing ionic *** these biochars,the giant reed biochar with relatively higher DEP adsorption and low desorption exhibited the great efficiency for DEP removal as an environment-friendly *** results highlighted the significant roles of micropore filling and hydrogen bond in determining adsorption capacity of designed biochars prepared from selecting suitable agricultural straws and wetland plant waste to typical *** findings are useful for producing designed biochars from different biomass wastes for plasticizer pollution control.

In-situ study on γ phase transformation behaviour of γ-TiAl alloys at different cooling rates

γ-TiAl-based alloys are promising lightweight high-temperature structural materials, and the transformation from the α parent phase to γ lamellae during the cooling process has a great influence on the microstructures and mechanical properties of TiAl alloys. In this paper, an in-situ observation technique, high-temperature laser scanning confocal microscopy(HTLSCM), was utilized to investigate the continuous cooling transition(CCT) from the α phase in three compositions. The nucleation and growth behaviors of γ lamellae were studied at several moderate cooling rates. In addition, the processes of helium gas quenching for three alloys were investigated, and the massive transformation was observed in Ti–49Al. CCT diagraphs were concluded for three alloys. The Vickers hardness of TiAl alloys subjected to different cooling rates was tested, and it was found that the hardness of alloys was enhanced with increasing cooling rate due to the refinement of lamellar spacing.

Atmospheric deposition of particulate organic nitrogen（ONp） is a significant process in the global nitrogen cycle and may be pivotally important for N-limited ***,past models largely overlo oked the spatial and chemical inhomogeneity of atmospheric ONpand were thus deficient in assessing global *** constructed a comprehensive global model of atmospheric gaseous and particulate organic nitrogen（ON）,including the latest knowledge on emissions and secondary *** this model,we simulated global atmospheric ONpabundances consistent with *** estimated global atmospheric ON deposition was 26 Tg N yr-1,predominantly in the form of ONp(23 Tg N yr-1)and mostly from wildfires（37%）,oceans（22%） and aqueous productions（17%）.Globally,ONpcontributed as much as 40% to 80% of the total N deposition downwind of biomass-burning *** ONpdeposition thus constituted the dominant external N supply to the N-limited boreal forests,tundras and the Arctic Ocean,and its importance maybe amplified in a future warming climate.

With the rapid development of nuclear energy,the removal of radioactive iodine generated during spent fuel reprocessing has become increasingly *** on the unique straw-like structure of populus tomentosa fiber(PTF)and the highly active iodine vapor capture ability of zero-valent silver nanoparticles(PTF@Ag^(0)NP),an Ag^(0)NP composite functional material with highly efficient iodine vapor capture capability was synthesized from biowaste PTF through ultrasonic and hightemperature hydrothermal methods in this *** iodine capture experiment demonstrated that PTF@Ag^(0)NP exhibits rapid iodine capture efficiency,reaching dynamic equilibrium within 4 h and a maximum capture capacity of 1008.1 mg/*** functional theory calculations show that PTF@Ag^(0)NP exhibits extremely high chemical reactivity toward iodine,with a reaction binding energy of-2.88 e ***,the molecular dynamics of PTF@Ag^(0)NP indicate that there is no atomic displacement at 77?C,indicating the excellent temperature stability of the material at the operating *** capture mechanism suggests that iodine vapor primarily reacts with Ag^(0)NP to form Ag I,and that the hydroxyl groups in PTF can also effectively capture iodine vapor by adsorption *** conclusion,PTF@Ag^(0)NP is expected to be an effective candidate adsorbent material for removing radioactive iodine vapor from exhaust gases during spent fuel reprocessing.
