Effects of fine particulate matter and its constituents on childhood pneumonia: a cross-sectional study in six Chinese cities

Background Evidence of the effects of fine particulate matter (PM 2·5 ) and its chemical constituents on childhood pneumonia is scarce. We aimed to investigate the effects of PM 2·5 and its chemical constituents on doctor-diagnosed pneumonia in preschool children in China. Methods A cross-sectional study was done in six Chinese cities (ie, Shanghai, Nanjing, Chongqing, Changsha, Urumqi, and Taiyuan), based on the China, Children, Homes and Health project (2011–12), and included 30 759 preschool children across 205 preschools. Information on the prevalence of life-ever pneumonia, demographic characteristics, and home environmental factors were collected by validated questionnaires. Questionnaires were answered by parents or guardians of the children, and completed questionnaires were returned within 1 week, under the guidance of trained project investigators. The annual levels of ambient air pollutants (PM 2·5 , ozone, and dust) and five major PM 2·5 chemical constituents (ie, black carbon, organic carbon, and three water-soluble ions [ammonium, NH 4 + ; sulphate, SO 4 2− ; and nitrite, NO 3 − ]) were obtained from a combination of satellite remote sensing, chemical transport modelling, and ground-based monitors (spatial resolution of 0·01° × 0·01° [ie, 1 km × 1 km]). The ambient air pollutants and chemical constituents were allocated to children according to geocoded preschool addresses. A hierarchical multiple regression model was done to evaluate the associations between PM 2·5 and chemical components and childhood pneumonia at the preschool level and at the individual level, after adjusting for covariates. The study was approved by the ethics committee of the School of Public Health, Fudan University, Shanghai, China. Findings The prevalence of life-ever doctor-diagnosed pneumonia was significantly different between the six cities (p=0·004). Percolation transition is widely observed in networks ranging from biology to engineering. While much attention has been paid to network topologies, studies rarely focus on critical percolation phenomena driven by network dynamics. Using extensive real data, we study the critical percolation properties in city traffic dynamics. Our results suggest that two modes of different critical percolation behaviors are switching in the same network topology under different traffic dynamics. One mode of city traffic (during nonrush hours or days off) has similar critical percolation characteristics as small world networks, while the other mode (during rush hours on working days) tends to behave as a 2D lattice. This switching behavior can be understood by the fact that the high-speed urban roads during nonrush hours or days off (that are congested during rush hours) represent effective long-range connections, like in small world networks. Provenance analysis of surface sediments in the Holocene mud area of the southern coastal waters off Shandong Peninsula,China

The sedimentary record of mud areas is an important carrier of information on the Holocene evolution of marine environments. Based on fine interpretations of the shallow stratigraphic section data, a small mud deposit area has been found in the southern coastal waters off Shandong Peninsula. This mud area is mainly distributed in coastal waters north of Laoshantou to the vicinity of Rushan Estuary. Overall, it is parallel to the coastline and spreads in a banded pattern, gradually thinning from offshore to the sea. The isopach map of depth distribution is parallel with the shoreline, and the depocenter lies in coastal waters of the Aoshan Bay where the maximum thickness is up to 22.5 m. Accelerator mass spectrometry（AMS） ^（14）C dating shows that the mud area was formed in the Holocene. The test data of surface sediments from the mud area, including particle size, mineral characteristics, and rare earth element contents, are used in comparisons with the composition of materials from the major surrounding medium and small rivers flowing into the sea and the Huanghe（Yellow） River. In this paper, the sedimentary characteristics and provenance of the mud deposit area are discussed. The results show that the formation of this mud area resulted from the joint action of the Huanghe River and surrounding rivers flowing into the sea.

Reduction in the costs of DNA sequencing and genotyping allows for the increased availability of databases which can be useful for analyzing the relationship between the human genetic code and visible characteristics, diseases, and behaviors, among others. The aim of this study is to improve the prediction of eye color from genotype by means of several Machine Learning models, using a dataset of 308 volunteers from Buenos Aires, Argentina. The results achieved are competitive and demonstrate the usefulness of artificial intelligence (AI) in the fields of genetics and its application in areas such as health, biometrics and forensics. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Robust secure transmission of using main-lobe-integration based leakage beaforming in directional modulation MU-MIMO systems

In the paper, we make an investigation of robust beamforming for secure directional modulation in the multi-user multiple-input and multiple output (MU-MIMO) systems in the presence of direction angle measurement errors. When statistical knowledge of direction angle measurement errors is unavailable, a novel robust beamforming scheme of combining main-lobe-integration (MLI) and leakage is proposed to simultaneously transmit multiple different independent parallel confidential message streams to the associated multiple distinct desired users. The proposed scheme includes two steps: designing the beamforming vectors of the useful confidential messages and constructing artificial noise (AN) projection matrix. Here, in its first step, the beamforming vectors for the useful confidential messages of desired user k are given by minimizing the useful signal power leakage from main-lobe of desired user k to the sum of main-lobes of the remaining desired directions plus main-lobes of all eavesdropper directions. In its second step, the AN projection matrix is constructed by simultaneously maximizing the AN power leakage to all eavesdropper directions such that all eavesdroppers are disrupted seriously, where AN is viewed by the transmitter as a useful signal for eavedroppers. Due to independent beamforming vectors for different desired users, a more secure transmission is achieved. Compared with conventional non-robust methods, the proposed method can provide a significant improvement in bit error rate along the desired directions and secrecy-sum-rate towards multiple desired users without needing statistical property or distribution of angle measurement errors. The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset - with data collected between 2020 and 2022 - to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research.

Thermally induced vibration(TIV)is a typical failure of large-scale space *** paper reports a laboratory experiment that aims to investigate this unusual structural behavior of complex engineering *** the help of a Fourier finite element program,the fixing of a space boom section is well designed so that the TIV can be successfully *** the observed torsional vibration mode is different from the bending vibration mode predicted by the classic theory based on a simple beam model,it can be successfully explained by the general thermal structural interaction *** demonstrates the validity of the theoretical model and the necessity of using finite element program to analyze complex engineering structures.
