Mesh generation is the prerequiste of Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method. In this paper, singular points in mesh is classified and a new strategy is proposed to deal with these points directly. In addition, a parallell algoritm is implemented with OpenMP to accelerate the mesh process. In the end, a test example is provided to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed improved algorithm.

Is resource allocation and grain yield of rice altered by inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi?

Aims our study quantified the combined effects of fertilization and inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF)on grain yield and allocation of biomass and nutrients in field-grown rice(Oryza sativa l.).Methods a two-factor experiment was conducted at a field site in northeast of China(in shuangcheng,Heilongjiang Province,songhua river basin):six nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer levels were provided(0,20,40,60,80 and 100%of the local norm of ferti-lizer supply),with or without inoculation with Glomus *** maturity,we quantified the percentage of root length colonization by AMF,grain yield,shoot:root ratios,shoot N and P contents and nutrients allocated to panicles,leaves and *** Findingsas expected,inoculation resulted in greatly increased AMF colo-nization,which in turn led to higher shoot:root ratios and greater shoot N ***:root ratios of inoculated rice increased with increasing fertilization while there was a significant interaction between fertilization and inoculation on shoot:root ***,a F inoculation increased panicle:shoot ratios,panicle N:shoot N ratios and panicle P:shoot P ratios,especially in plants grown at low fertilizer ***,inoculated rice exhibited higher grain yield,with the maximum improvement(near 62%)at the lower fertilizer *** results showed that(i)AMFinoculated plants conform to the functional equilibrium theory,albeit to a reduced extent compared to non-inoculated plants and(ii)AMF inoculation resulted in greater allocation of shoot biomass to panicles and increased grain yield by stimulating N and P redis-tribution to panicles.

Dynamic fracture characteristics of cylindrical steel shell under internal blast loading

Dynamic fracture characteristics are the foundation for conducting safety assessment and failure analysis of explosion containment vessels (ECVs) subjected to internal blast loading. The experiment was conducted to investigate dynamic fracture characteristics of cylindrical steel shells subjected to internal blast loading at the centre. The elastic-plastic response of cylindrical steel shells was simulated numerically by using nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis code LS-DYNA. The fracture mode and mechanism of a cylindrical shell were specially studied by means of the analysis of deformation, macrographs and meso-graphs of fracture surface and elastic-plastic response. The results show that the axial direction fracture surface of the cylindrical steel shell exhibits a mixed ductile fracture mode with shearing dimple by micro-voids coalescence. Dynamical ductility deformations appear and the shear bands form when the cylindrical steel shell expands under internal blast loading. The fracture mechanism is that the shear bands destroyed the initiation and growth of the micro-voids and micro-cracks along the shear bands due to its softening effect under tensile circumferential stress. The shear bands and the tensile circumferential stress dominate the final fracture mode. The fracture mode is the ductile fracture. Copyright © 2014 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

In this study, the radar returns from a target with deterministic polarization in clutter environments illuminated by fully polarized waves are taken into account. Statistical properties of the polarization ratio for radar returns are obtained on the assumption of complex Gaussian distributions with non-zero means. Probability density functions (PDFs) of the amplitude ratio and the phase difference are expressed in closed forms. Comparisons of statistical properties from simulated data to the theoretical PDFs derived on the basis of non-zero means, as well as the traditional ones. The better fitted results are presented to verify the advantage of the newly proposed polarization ratio models.

The three-dimensional (3D) shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction (SWTBLI) of a hypersonic flow passing a single-fin placed on a flat-plate at Mach 5 and Re=3.7 × 107/m is conducted by the large-eddy simulation (LES) approach. A newly developed in-house LES code is used that applies the seventh-order low-dissipation monotonicity-preserving scheme to solve the inviscid Euler fluxes and the dynamic Smagorinsky subgrid model to take account of the subgrid stress and heat flux. The performed LES has demonstrated very good agreement with experimental data in the mean flowfield structure, surface pressure as well as surface flow pattern. The shock system, flow separation structure, and turbulence characteristics are all investigated by analyzing the obtained LES data. The turbulence in this 3D SWTBLI problem is found to be dominated by wall turbulence, large-scale free shear turbulence, as well as the corner vortex in different regions. In the reverse flow region, the streamwise elongated coherent structures are regenerated beneath the main separation vortex, almost immediately after the flow reattachment location. © 2015 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

To evaluate associations by EGFR mutation status for lung adenocarcinoma risk among never-smoking Asian women, we conducted a meta-analysis of 11 loci previously identified in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Genotyping in an additional 10,780 never-smoking cases and 10,938 never-smoking controls from Asia confirmed associations with eight known single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Two new signals were observed at genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10-8), namely, rs7216064 (17q24.3, BPTF), for overall lung adenocarcinoma risk, and rs3817963 (6p21.3, BTNL2) which is specific to cases with EGFR mutations. In further sub-analyses by EGFR status, rs9387478 (ROS1/DCBLD1) and rs2179920 (HLA-DPB1) showed stronger estimated associations in EGFR-positive compared to EGFR-negative cases. Comparison of the overall associations with published results in Western populations revealed that the majority of these findings were distinct, underscoring the importance of distinct contributing factors for smoking and non-smoking lung cancer. Our results extend the catalogue of regions associated with lung adenocarcinoma in non-smoking Asian women and highlight the importance of how the germline could inform risk for specific tumour mutation patterns, which could have important translational implications.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are able to directly convert about 50 to 90% of energy from oxidation of organic matters in waste to electricity and have great potential application in broad fields such as wastewater treatment. Unfortunately, the power density of the MFCs at present is significantly lower than the theoretical value because of technical limitations including low bacteria loading capacity and difficult electron transfer between the bacteria and the electrode. We reported a three-dimensional (3D) graphene aerogel (GA) decorated with platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) as an efficient freestanding anode for MFCs. The 3D GA/Pt-based anode has a continuous 3D macroporous structure that is favorable for microorganism immobilization and efficient electrolyte transport. Moreover, GA scaffold is homogenously decorated with Pt NPs to further enhance extracellular charge transfer between the bacteria and the anode. The MFCs constructed with 3D GA/Pt-based anode generate a remarkable maximum power density of 1460 mW/m2, 5.3 times higher than that based on carbon cloth (273 mW/m2). It deserves to be stressed that 1460 mW/m2 obtained from the GA/Pt anode shows the superior performance among all the reported MFCs inoculated with Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Moreover, as a demonstration of the real application, the MFC equipped with the freestanding GA/Pt anode has been successfully applied in driving timer for the first time, which opens the avenue toward the real application of the MFCs. © 2018 The Authors.

Numerous pyrotechnic devices are used in aerospace vehicles to separate structural subsystems, deploy appendages, or activate on-board operational subsystems. The state-of-the-art for pyroshock prediction, design and test verification has not yet reached the maturity of other environmental disciplines, due to the complex, high-frequency nature of pyroshocks. However, recent advances in the analysis and simulation of pyroshocks have led to a better understanding of this environment. This paper presents an overview of the development of characterization of pyroshock, various experimental tests and simulations, analytical and numerical simulation for pyroshock prediction, and protecting techniques. © JVE INTERnational LTD.

Microorganism quantity and enzyme activities in wheat field subjected to different nitrogen fertilizer rate

Field experiments are described involving nitrogen fertilizer in wheat field to research its effect on microbial quantity and enzyme activity. The results showed that 250 kg N hm-2applied in wheat field (1) can increase bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes quantity by 39.9%, 56.7% and 70.5% compare to 0 kg N hm-2. (2) Similarly, the activities of soil urease, catalase and FDA expressed 60.8%, 18.3% and 49.1% of the improvement variation compared to 0 kg N hm-2, respectively. (3) Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H) and Evenness index (E) reached the peak (H=0.37, E=0.33). Correlation analysis microbial quantity with enzyme activity indicated they were related to each other.
