B-mode ultrasound tongue imaging is widely used to visualize the tongue motion, due to its appearing properties. Extracting the tongue surface contour in the B-mode ultrasound image is still a challenge, while it is a prerequisite for further quantitative analysis. Recently, deep learning-based approach has been adopted in this task. However, the standard deep models fail to address faint contour when the ultrasound wave goes parallel to the tongue surface. To address the faint or missing contours in the sequence, we explore the shape consistency-based regularizer, which can take sequential information into account. By incorporating the regularizer, the deep model not only can extract frame-specific contours, but also can enforce the similarity between the contours extracted from adjacent frames. Extensive experiments are conducted both on the synthetic and real ultrasound tongue imaging dataset and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed method. Network monitoring is vital in modern clouds and data center networks that need diverse traffic statistics ranging from flow size distributions to heavy hitters. To cope with increasing network rates and massive traffic volumes, sketch based approximate measurement has been extensively studied to trade the accuracy for memory and computation cost, which unfortunately, is sensitive to hash *** paper presents a clustering-preserving sketch method to be resilient to hash collisions. We provide an equivalence analysis of the sketch in terms of the K-means clustering. Based on the analysis result, we cluster similar network flows to the same bucket array to reduce the estimation variance and use the average to obtain unbiased estimation. Testbed shows that the framework adapts to line rates and provides accurate query results. Real-world trace-driven simulations show that LSS remains stable performance under wide ranges of parameters and dramatically outperforms state-of-the-art sketching structures, with over 10 3 to 10 5 times reduction in relative errors for per-flow queries as the ratio of the number of buckets to the number of network flows reduces from 10% to 0.1%.

With serverless computing offering more efficient and cost-effective application deployment, the diversity of serverless platforms presents challenges to users, including platform lock-in and costly migration. Moreover, due to the black box nature of function computing, traditional performance benchmarking methods are not applicable, necessitating new studies. This article presents a detailed comparison of six major public cloud function computing platforms and introduces a benchmarking framework for function computing performance. This framework aims to help users make comprehensive comparisons and select the most suitable platform for their specific needs. © 2023 IEEE.

Locality-sensitive sketching for resilient network flow monitoring

To cope with increasing network rates and massive traffic volumes, sketch based approximate measurement has been extensively studied to trade the accuracy for memory and computation cost, which unfortunately, is sensitive to hash collisions. In addition, deploying the sketch involves fine-grained performance control and instrumentation. This paper presents a locality-sensitive sketch (LSS) to be resilient to hash collisions. LSS proactively minimizes the estimation error due to hash collisions with an autoencoder based optimization model, and reduces the estimation variance by keeping similar network flows to the same bucket array. To illustrate the feasibility of the sketch, we develop a disaggregatedmonitoring application that supports non-intrusive sketching deployment and native network-wide analysis. Testbed shows that the framework adapts to line rates and provides accurate query results. Real-world trace-driven simulations show that LSS remains stable performance underwide ranges of parameters and dramatically outperforms state-of-the-art sketching structures, with over 103 to 105 times reduction in relative errors for per-flow queries as the ratio of the number of buckets to the number of network flows reduces from 10% to 0.1%. NebulaFL: Effective Asynchronous Federated Learning for JointCloud Computing

With advancements in AI infrastructure and Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) technology, Federated Learning as a Service (FLaaS) through JointCloud Computing (JCC) is promising to break through the resource constraints caused by heterogeneous edge devices in the traditional Federated Learning (FL) paradigm. Specifically, with the protection from TEE, data owners can achieve efficient model training with high-performance AI services in the cloud. By providing additional FL services, cloud service providers can achieve collaborative learning among data owners. However, FLaaS still faces three challenges, i.e., i) low training performance caused by heterogeneous data among data owners, ii) high communication overhead among different clouds (i.e., data centers), and iii) lack of efficient resource scheduling strategies to balance training time and cost. To address these challenges, this paper presents a novel asynchronous FL approach named NebulaFL for collaborative model training among multiple clouds. To address data heterogeneity issues, NebulaFL adopts a version control-based asynchronous FL training scheme in each data center to balance training time among data owners. To reduce communication overhead, NebulaFL adopts a decentralized model rotation mechanism to achieve effective knowledge sharing among data centers. To balance training time and cost, NebulaFL integrates a reward-guided strategy for data owners selection and resource scheduling. The experimental results demonstrate that, compared to the state-of-the-art FL methods, NebulaFL can achieve up to 5.71% accuracy improvement. In addition, NebulaFL can reduce up to 50% communication overhead and 61.94% costs under a target accuracy. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Ultrasound tongue imaging is widely used in clinical linguistics and phonetics. Recently, deep neural networks, especially convolutional neural networks, have been widely used in the interpretation and analysis of ultrasound tongue images (UTI). Despite achieving satisfactory performance, deep models rely on a large amount of manually labeled data, which is often difficult to obtain in practical settings. To address this issue, this paper focuses on how to utilize a large amount of unlabeled UTI data to improve the performance of UTI classification task. Specifically, we explore self-supervised learning with masking modeling strategy. By predicting the masked part, our pre-trained model enables the neural network to infer contextual information. Then, we fine-tune the pre-trained model with a small amount of labeled data. Compared with the previous competing algorithms, our method can improve the classification accuracy by an average of 13.33% in four different scenarios.

The papers accepted cover a wide range of exciting topics, including resource grid and service grid, information grid and knowledge grid, grid monitoring,managementand organizationtools, grid portal, grid service, Web s- vices and their QoS, service orchestration, grid middleware and toolkits, software glue technologies, grid security, innovative grid applications, advanced resource reservation andscheduling,performanceevaluationandmodeling,computer-supportedcooperative work, P2P computing, automatic computing, and meta-information management. The conference continues to grow and this year a record total of 581 manuscripts (including workshop submissions) were submitted for consideration. Expecting this growth, the size of the program committee was increased from 50 members for GCC 2003 for 70 in GCC 2004. Relevant differences from previous editions of the conf- ence: it is worth mentioning a signi?cant increase in the number of papers submitted by authors from outside China; and the acceptance rate was much lower than for p- vious GCC conferences. From the 427 papers submitted to the main conference, the program committee selected only 96 regular papers for oral presentation and 62 short papers for poster presentation in the program.

This paper presents a load balancing method for a multi-block grids-based CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) application on heterogeneous platform. This method includes an asymmetric task scheduling scheme and a load balancing model. The idea is to balance the computing speed between the CPU and the coprocessor by adjusting the workload and the numbers of threads on both sides. Optimal load balance parameters are empirically selected, guided by a performance model. Performance evaluation is conducted on a computer server consists of two Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 CPUs and two MIC coprocessors (Xeon Phi 5110P and Xeon Phi 7120P) for the simulation of turbulent combustion in a supersonic combustor. The results show that the performance is highly sensitive to the load balance parameters. With the optimal parameters, the heterogeneous computing achieves a maximum speedup of 2.30 × for a 6-block mesh, and a maximum speedup of 2.66 × for a 8-block mesh, over the CPU-only computing.

With the rapid growth of large language models, cloud computing has become an indispensable component of the AI industry. Cloud service providers(CSPs) are establishing AI data centers to service AI workloads. In the face of this surging need for AI computing power, building a connected computing environment across various clouds and forming a JointCloud presents an attractive solution. However, scheduling AI tasks across multiple AI data centers within a JointCloud environment presents a significant challenge: how to balance users’ demands while ensuring CSPs’ fairness in scheduling. Existing research primarily focuses on optimizing scheduling quality with limited consideration for fairness. Therefore, this paper proposes a Fairness-Aware AI-Workloads Allocation method (F3A), a fair cross-cloud allocation technique for AI tasks. F3A utilizes Point and Token to reflect both the resource status and historical task allocations of AI data centers, enabling the consideration of users’ multidimensional demands and facilitating fair task allocation across multiple centers. In order to better assess the fairness of scheduling, we also devised a fairness indicator(FI), based on the Gini coefficient to measure the fairness of task allocation. The experimental results demonstrate that F3A consistently maintains FI within 0.1 across various cluster sizes and different task quantities, representing an improvement of 76.45% compared to classical fair scheduling algorithms round-robin. F3A exhibits commendable performance in ensuring fairness in task allocation while also demonstrating effectiveness in cost reduction and enhancing user satisfaction.
