There are two key issues for information diffusion in blogosphere: (1) blog posts are usually short, noisy and contain multiple themes, (2) information diffusion through blogosphere is primarily driven by the "word-of- mouth" effect, thus making topics evolve very fast. This paper presents a novel topic tracking approach to deal with these issues by modeling a topic as a semantic graph, in which the semantic relatedness between terms are learned from Wikipedia. For a given topic/post, the name entities, Wikipedia concepts, and the semantic relatedness are extracted to generate the graph model. Noises are filtered out through the graph clustering algorithm. To handle topic evolution, the topic model is enriched by using Wikipedia as background knowledge. Furthermore, graph edit distance is used to measure the similarity between a topic and its posts. The proposed method is tested by using the real-world blog data. Experimental results show the advantage of the proposed method on tracking the topic in short, noisy texts.

Strongly promoted by the leading industrial companies, cloud computing becomes increasingly popular in recent years. The growth rate of cloud computing surpasses even the most optimistic predictions. A cloud application is a large-scale distributed system that consist a lot of distributed cloud nodes. How to make optimal deployment of cloud applications is a challenging research problem. When deploying a cloud application to the cloud environment, cloud node ranking is one of the most important approaches for selecting optimal cloud nodes for the cloud application. Traditional ranking methods usually rank the cloud nodes based on their QoS values, without considering the communication performance between cloud nodes. However, such kind of node relationship is very important for the communication-intensive cloud applications (e.g., Message Passing Interface (MPI) programs), which have a lot of communications between the selected cloud nodes. In this paper, we propose a novel clustering-based method for selecting optimal cloud nodes for deploying communication-intensive applications to the cloud environment. Our method not only takes into account the cloud node qualities, but also the communication performance between different nodes. We deploy several well-known MPI programs on a real-world cloud and compare our method with other methods. The experimental results show the effectiveness of our cluster-based method. © 2011 IEEE.

Recently, Cloud computing, as one of the hottest words in IT world, has drawn great attention. Many IT companies such as IBM, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Yahoo and others vigorously develop cloud computing systems and related products to customers. However, there are still some difficulties for customers to adopt cloud computing, in which many security issues exist, because data for a customer is stored and processed in cloud, not in a local machine. This paper briefly introduces cloud computing and its key concepts. In particularly, we intend to discuss security requirements and security issues involving data, application and virtualization in cloud computing, as well as current solutions to these issues. © 2012 IEEE.

Interconnect Network is the key component in high performance computing system. With the incoming era of Exa-Scale (10 18 FLOPS) computing, designing large scale interconnect networks is facing with serious challenges in network management and fault tolerance. To construct higher performance and more reliable interconnect networks, we propose an efficient and intelligent network management architecture for indirect interconnect networks. This paper emphatically introduces the network management architecture, the in-band management channels in the Network Interface Chips (NIC) and Network Routing Chips (NRC) respectively, efficient centralized network management approach, distributed intelligent faulttolerant routing management, and so on. Based on the prototype system, the Control and Status Registers (CSR) accessing latency performance of in-band network management is evaluated. Also based on a customized simulation model for indirect interconnect networks, the typical distributed fault-tolerant scenes are tested. The experiment results show the in-band network management can averagely achieves 716 times improvements than the out of-band network management. Moreover, by running heuristic algorithms to automatically reconstruct routing tables for failure links or routers, the intellectual network management Engine can achieve fault-tolerant routing to maximizing network performance.

Mobile devices play an important role in our everyday lives, but they also bring great security threats. Deep packet inspection (DPI) is one of the most efficient methods to detect the malicious information hidden in the mobile traffic, and regular expression matching is widely used in DPI for its powerful expressive ability. However, with the increasing complexity of regular expressions, traditional solutions cannot meet the requirements of both storage and high performance. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid matching architecture and two-stage memory architecture for the state of the art hybrid FA to solve this problem. Experiment results confirm that our architecture is scalable to complex rule sets, and the matching performance outperforms state of the art memory centric solution by up to 15x. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

MOOCs have attracted a large number of learners with different education background all over the world. Despite its increasing popularity, MOOCs still suffer from the problem of high drop-out rate. One important reason may be due to the difficulty in understanding learning demand and user interests. To helper users find the most suitable courses, personalized course recommendation technology has become a hot research topic in e-learning and data mining community. One of the keys to the success of personalized course recommendation is a good user modeling method. Previous works in course recommendation often focus on developing user modeling methodology which learns latent user interests from historic learning data. Recently, interactive course recommendation has become more and more popular. In this paradigm, recommender systems can directly query user interests through survey tables or questionnaires and thus the learned interests may be more accurate. In this paper, we study the user interest acquisition problem based on the interactive course recommendation framework (ICRF). Under this framework, we systematically discuss different settings on querying user interests. To reduce performance-cost score, we propose the ICRF user interest acquisition algorithm that combines representative sampling and interest propagation algorithm to acquire user interests in a cost-effective way. With extensive experiments on real-world MOOC course enrollment datasets, we empirically demonstrate that our selective acquisition strategy is very effective and it can reduce the performance-cost score by 30.25% compared to the traditional aggressive acquisition strategies. © 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

With fast development of transistor technology, Graphic processing Unit(GPU) is increasingly used in the non-graphics applications, and major GPU hardware vendors have introduced software stacks for their own GPUs, such as Brook+ for AMD GPU. Compared with the traditional parallel systems, heterogeneous systems integerating stream-based multi-threaded GPUs provide higher parallel computing capabilities with lower cost. However, porting traditional applications to the heterogeneous systems makes new demand of application optimization on GPU. Based on the AMD's Brook+ platform, we explored application optimization features on AMD GPU by optimizing and implementing the benchmark LBM from SPEC2006. To improve the program locality, we optimized the original data layout of LBM. Using the short vector data types mechanism provided by Brook+, we also optimized the GPU's bandwidth utilization and its thread processors' efficiency. Through the branch elimination technique, we reduced the performance lose caused by branch divergences in the kernel, which is due to the GPU's SIMD executing mode. The experiment results show that data layout, memory bandwidth, branch paths and other factors have a close effect on the performance of program execution on the GPU. Through all the optimizations, we finally got a speedup of 22x (single-precision) and 19x (double-precision) over the original serial benchmark code on a Quad-core CPU, and a speedup of 4x (single-precision) and 8.7x (double-precision) over the original OMP benchmark code on a 8-core CPU.

Efficient mapping of logical processes to physical processes is one of key technologies to accelerate parallel performance simulation. Aiming at minimizing the communications between SMP nodes and between host physical processes, this paper presents a novel method named TPsmp-LP 3 M. It automatically extracts communication pattern of logical processes from trace and then generates a two-phase mapping from logical processes to SMP clusters. Experimental results show that TPsmp-LP 3 M can outperform the regular mapping method by up to 20.2%.

Improving the channel utilization is a significant issue to enhance the performance in WLAN. This paper presents, Pillow Talks MAC (PT-MAC), a novel spectrum sharing mechanism to create an extra channel (pt-channel) for client- to-client transmission in WLAN. Obviously, The basic chal- lenge in our proposal is how pt-channel works concurrently and transparently with AP transmissions. To address the issue, in PT-MAC, selected clients are allowed to contend for pt-channel during uplink transmissions and talk freely under the ongoing downlink transmissions. Based on ad- vanced physical techniques, pt-channel transmitter receives and forwards the AP signals simultaneously within OFDM cyclic prefix, resulting in mixed signals are overheard by re- ceiver in pt-channel. However, the mixed message can be re- covered by pt-decoding system. Simulations and analytical results show that, PT-MAC reuses the spectrum in WLAN and achieves a throughput gain as large as 92% with similar fairness, when the ratio of downlink traffic is about 80%. © 2015 ACM.

This paper quantitatively studies the trace effects to the performance and accuracy of the BigSim Emulator, a scalable parallel emulator for large-scale computers. To assess the accuracy effect we modify the emulator code to collect the predicted computation time. Four MPI programs with different computation to communication ratios are used as benchmarks. The emulation time and the predicted computation time, both when trace generation are enabled and disabled, are collected on two parallel host machines. The results show that although the BigSim Emulator only traces communication events and dependencies, trace generation still evidently degrades the emulation performance for programs with high communication to computation ratios. Trace generation also significantly affects the accuracy of the predicted computation time for communication intensive programs, which is an issue that can not be overlooked.
