Based on variable structure control (VSC) and fuzzy local controller network (FLCN), a new design method of robust gain-scheduling control is proposed in this paper. The proper sliding-modes and the tendency-rates for general operation-points are introduced such that the system gets into the sliding-modes’ motion as soon as possible and has the desired performance. Its good performance is due to the robustness of VSC. However, any local controller works well only in the local region of a specified operation-point. In this paper functions similar to the fuzzy-attributed function in fuzzy-systems are introduced to form FLCN. The simulation results showed that the presented method is feasible and acceptable.

This paper present a new effective algorithm for the optimal realization of state estimate feedback controller structures for discrete time systems subject to finite-word-length constraints. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear programming to provide an easy and efficient optimization tool to solve such a complex problem. Simulation results of the optimum realizations of state estimate feedback controller structures are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

The robust stabilization problem for a class of uncertain linear time-delay systems containing sector saturating actuator is considered in this paper. The uncertain time-delay systems under consideration are described by state differential equations with time-varying unknown-but-bounded uncertain parameters and delayed state. The delay is assumed to be constant bounded but unknown. The new criterion of delay-dependent robust stabilizability for uncertain time-delay systems is presented and the corresponding robust memoryless state feedback controller is derived in terms of the solutions of several linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Numerical example is presented to illustrate the obtained results.

The cross-directional (CD) basis weight signal analysis and estimation for paper machines are investigated, and a new approach is proposed by using the wavelet multiresolution analysis theory. Orthogonal wavelet functions are used to represent CD basis weight variations at various resolutions in the discrete wavelet transform domain. By selecting a suitable threshold resolution, the controllable components can be separated from the original signal. Simulation results indicate that the dimension of the approximating signal can be significantly reduced. It is more suitable for CD modeling and control of basis weight variations on paper machines.

This paper proposes a novel approach for cross-directional (CD) modeling and control of a paper machine based on discrete wavelet transforms. CD basis weight variations and the spatial shape of the slice lip are approximated at various resolutions, respectively. A new response model describing the relationship between the settings of the slice-screws to the basis weight profile is established in the discrete wavelet transform domain. Simulation results show that the size of the optimization and control problem associated with large dimensions can be significantly reduced.

The fuzzy neuron control method is proposed for mold level control of the continuous steel casting in this paper. The dynamic characteristics of the continuous steel casting process is described. After discussing the neuron model-free control method and a basic fuzzy system, the self-tuning the neuron controller gain scheme using the fuzzy algorithm is presented. Considering the plant with big uncertainties and grave non linearities, the fuzzy neuron control system is set up and the novel model-free controller is designed. The simulation tests of moid level control are made under various conditions with different casting speeds, disturbances, new gate valve and old gate valve. The results demonstrate that the new controller has good performances, very strong robustness and adaptability. The method is very simple and convenient to use in practice.

A new approach for estimation and modeling of Cross-Directional (CD) basis weight on paper machines is proposed based on multiresolution analysis theory. Orthogonal basis wavelet functions are used to represent CD basis weight profiles at different resolutions. By selecting a suitable threshold resolution, the controllable and uncontrollable parts of the profile can be separated. A novel response model of the CD profile to actuators is established in the wavelet transform(WT) domain. Simulation results show that a significant reduction of the dimension of system can be achieved by modeling in the WT domain.

The problem of robustness analysis of uncertain linear systems with guaranteed cost control is considered. The uncertainty is assumed to enter into both the state and input matrices. Some robustness bounds for unstructured and structured uncertain systems using guaranteed cost control synthesis are presented. In addition, a robustification procedure by solving an optimization problem for structured uncertain systems is proposed. Comparisons with previous results in the context of guaranteed cost control are presented, and numerical example to illustrate the use of the proposed method is also given.

Smith predictor has been proved to be a useful scheme for stable processes with time delay. In this paper an analytical design method of Smith predictor is presented for integrator/time delay processes based on the theory of complex function. The design procedure incorporates a two-stage procedure. In the first stage, the controller that stabilizes the closed loop system is parameterized. In the second stage, high enough order Pade approximation is introduced to approximate the time delay, and convert the design problem of system with time delay to that of system without time delay. The optimal Smith predictor is then derived analytically. Examples are given to illustrate the method.
