Exploring advanced feature selection techniques: an application to dialectal Arabic data

In the field of automated language processing, distinguishing between Moroccan Arabic (Darija) in multilingual contexts is a major challenge. This study addresses this challenge by exploiting feature selection techniques to improve the accuracy of tongue detection. Using a comprehensive methodology integrating various feature selection methods, including TF-idf, CBOW, Word2Vec for feature extraction, LASSO regression, decision trees for machine learning techniques, and statistical feature selection such as ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Mutual information, alongside semantic techniques by developing our semantic encoders adapted to Arabic data, we strive to uncover the most important, relevant language features while attenuating the noise. As a result, we have obtained robust results by applying the famous XGBOOST, with conventional extraction methods and SVD as a dimensional reduction method with a very reasonable execution time. Our experimental results highlight the effectiveness of feature selection techniques to reinforce supervised learning tasks. This research not only advances the field of natural language processing but also highlights the central role of feature selection in deciphering complex linguistic landscapes. © Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management 2024.

Event-triggered resilient joint mobile robot localization and sensor fault estimation

The event-triggered joint sensor fault estimation and mobile robot (MR) localization (MRL) problem (MRLP) subject to the potential fluctuations of the estimator gain are investigated. From the external sensor to the estimator, to decrease the consumption of sensor energy and cut down network bandwidth resources, an event-triggered scheme is considered. For the sake of characterizing the phenomenon induced by the inaccurate calculation of estimator gain, an uncertainty with the bounded second moment is employed. The purpose of this study is theoretically to find a feasible and effective approach to the addressed joint estimation problem such that the estimation error (EE) covariance (EEC) meets the given performance index. First, a minimum upper bound (UB) of the EEC is derived. Subsequently, in terms of the proposed joint estimation approach and the corresponding results obtained, an algorithm to address the resilient joint sensor fault estimation and MRLP is summarized. At the end, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is validated through conducting a set of comparisive experiments. © 2024 The Author(s). In existing remote sensing image retrieval(RSIR)datasets,the number of images among different classes varies dramatically,which leads to a severe class imbalance *** studies propose to train the model with the ranking‐based metric(e.g.,average precision[AP]),because AP is robust to class ***,current AP‐based methods overlook an important issue:only optimising samples ranking before each positive sample,which is limited by the definition of AP and is prone to local *** achieve global optimisation of AP,a novel method,namely Optimising Samples after positive ones&AP loss(OSAP‐Loss)is proposed in this ***,a novel superior ranking function is designed to make the AP loss differentiable while providing a tighter upper ***,a novel loss called Optimising Samples after Positive ones(OSP)loss is proposed to involve all positive and negative samples ranking after each positive one and to provide a more flexible optimisation strategy for each ***,a graphics processing unit memory‐free mechanism is developed to thoroughly address the non‐decomposability of AP *** experimental results on RSIR as well as conventional image retrieval datasets show the superiority and competitive performance of OSAP‐Loss compared to the state‐of‐the‐art.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), a leading cause of global mortality, are intricately linked to arterial stiffness, a key factor in cardiovascular health. Non-invasive assessment of arterial stiffness, particularly through Carotid-to-femoral Pulse Wave Velocity (cf-PWV) - the gold standard in this field - is vital for early detection and management of CVDs. This study introduces a novel approach, utilizing photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal spectrograms as inputs for deep learning models to estimate cf-PWV, a significant advancement over traditional methods. Employing a modified ResNet-18 architecture, we analyze PPG signals from digital, radial, and brachial arteries of a simulated dataset of 4374 healthy adults. Our methodology's innovation lies in its direct use of finely tuned spectrogram images, bypassing the complex feature extraction processes. This approach achieved R2 (correlation coefficient) values of up to 0.9902 for the digital artery, 0.9898 for the radial artery, and 0.9825 for the brachial artery, coupled with significantly lower Mean Absolute Percentage Errors (MAPE) of approximately 1.61% for the digital, 1.87% for the radial, and 2.08% for the brachial artery. These findings highlight the efficacy of PPG spectrograms, especially from the digital artery, in providing an accurate, user-friendly, and non-invasive method for cf-PWV estimation, thereby enhancing the capabilities of non-invasive cardiovascular diagnostics. © 2024 IEEE.

Channel prediction is an effective approach for reducing the feedback or estimation overhead in massive multi-input multi-output (m-MIMO) systems. However, existing channel prediction methods lack precision due to model mismatch errors or network generalization issues. Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated powerful modeling and generalization abilities, and have been successfully applied to cross-modal tasks, including the time series analysis. Leveraging the expressive power of LLMs, we propose a pre-trained LLM-empowered channel prediction(LLM4CP)method to predict the future downlink channel state information (CSI) sequence based on the historical uplink CSI sequence. We fine-tune the network while freezing most of the parameters of the pre-trained LLM for better cross-modality knowledge transfer. To bridge the gap between the channel data and the feature space of the LLM,preprocessor, embedding, and output modules are specifically tailored by taking into account unique channel characteristics. Simulations validate that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) prediction performance on full-sample, few-shot, and generalization tests with low training and inference costs.

Vehicular network technology has made substantial advancements in recent years in the field of intelligent Transportation systems. Vehicular Cloud Computing (VCC) has emerged as a novel paradigm with a substantial increase in data exchange within Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). VCC integrates cloud computing, vehicular networking, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. It enables Infrastructure-to-Vehicle (I2V), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), and Vehicle-to-Device (V2D) communication. VCC optimizes vehicle, cloud infrastructure, and IoT resources while addressing significant communication security and vehicle-user privacy challenges. To address these issues, we developed an RFID-based authentication protocol for VCC based on a Henon map using a hash function. In addition, we also incorporated a Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) to resist physical tampering attacks. We validate the protocol's security formally and informally. The formal security analysis is conducted through a widely used RoR model. We use the Scyther simulation tool to verify the proposed protocol's security against various attacks. Moreover, we compare the performance of our protocol with similar existing protocols across important performance parameters such as communication and computation overheads and security attributes. The proposed protocol yields substantial improvements, demonstrating a 40.74% reduction in computation overhead and a 13.03% decrease in communication overhead as compared to related protocols, delivering both enhanced performance and resource efficiency. The analysis demonstrates its capacity to support secure communication in the VCC environment and satisfy desirable security attributes. © 2024 IEEE.

The neuron doctrine defines the neuron as the basic unit of the nervous system, which drives the dynamic behavior of our organs. This has led to neurons becoming the focus of modern neuroscience research and to the rise of neurocomputing, in which we try to digitally simulate human behavior. The goal being to better understand the human nervous system and gain more control over neuron-related diseases, helping doctors establish faster and more reliable medical diagnoses. In this context, we aim to simulate eye diseases and vision problems by convolving input images using a new class of neural networks based on a variable structure model of neurons presented in [1]. In this work, we focus on recreating the common convolution filters as a first step. This is the first time in neurocomputing literature that dendritic neurons have been used for dynamic convolution kernels generation and eye diseases simulation. We start with a presentation of our upgrades to the model’s flexibility and accuracy. Then, we propose a novel kernel generator algorithm to convolve the input images. Finally, we show its promising results in creating the outline, pixelization, and night convolution kernels, as well as control some metrics, including brightness and data retention. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Nodule Detection Using Local Binary Pattern Features to Enhance Diagnostic Decisions

Pulmonary nodules are small, round, or oval-shaped growths on the lungs. They can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). The size of a nodule can range from a few millimeters to a few centimeters in diameter. Nodules may be found during a chest X-ray or other imaging test for an unrelated health problem. In the proposed methodology pulmonary nodules can be classified into three stages. Firstly, a 2D histogram thresholding technique is used to identify volume segmentation. An ant colony optimization algorithm is used to determine the optimal threshold value. Secondly, geometrical features such as lines, arcs, extended arcs, and ellipses are used to detect oval shapes. Thirdly, Histogram Oriented Surface Normal Vector (HOSNV) feature descriptors can be used to identify nodules of different sizes and shapes by using a scaled and rotation-invariant texture description. Smart nodule classification was performed with the XGBoost classifier. The results are tested and validated using the Lung Image Consortium Database (LICD). The proposed method has a sensitivity of 98.49% for nodules sized 3–30 mm.
