The propagating intensity disturbances (PIDs) in plumes are still poorly understood and their identity (magnetoacoustic waves or flows) remains an open question. We investigate PIDs in five plumes located in the northern polar coronal hole observed during the 2017 total solar eclipse. Three plumes are associated with coronal bright points, jets and macrospicules at their base (active plumes) and the other two plumes are not (quiet plumes). The electron temperature at the base of the plumes is obtained from the filter ratio of images taken with the X-ray Telescope on board Hinode and the passband ratio around 400 nm from an eclipse instrument, the Diagnostic Coronagraph Experiment (DICE). The phase speed (vr), frequency (ω), and wavenumber (k) of the PIDs in the plumes are obtained by applying a Fourier transformation to the space-time (r−t plane) plots in images taken with the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) in three different wavelength channels (171 Å, 193 Å, and 211 Å). We found that the PIDs in the higher temperature AIA channels, 193 and 211 Å, are faster than that of the cooler AIA 171 Å channel. This tendency is more significant for the active plumes than the quiet ones. The observed speed ratio (∼1.3) between the AIA 171 and 193 Å channels is similar to the theoretical value (1.25) of a slow magnetoacoustic wave. Our results support the idea that PIDs in plumes represent a superposition of slow magnetoacoustic waves and plasma outflows that consist of dense cool flows and hot coronal jets. © 2021, CC BY.

The Compton Pair (ComPair) telescope is a prototype that aims to develop the necessary technologies for future medium energy gamma-ray missions and to design, build, and test the prototype in a gamma-ray beam and balloon flight. The ComPair team has built an instrument that consists of 4 detector subsystems: a double-sided silicon strip detector Tracker, a novel high-resolution virtual Frisch-grid cadmium zinc telluride Calorimeter, and a high-energy hodoscopic cesium iodide Calorimeter, all of which are surrounded by a plastic scintillator anti-coincidence detector. These subsystems together detect and characterize photons via Compton scattering and pair production, enable a veto of cosmic rays, and are a proof-of-concept for a space telescope with the same architecture. A future medium-energy gamma-ray mission enabled through ComPair will address many questions posed in the Astro2020 Decadal survey in both the New Messengers and New Physics and the Cosmic Ecosystems themes. Chemical investigations on the ethyl acetate extract of the octocoral Capnella imbricata collected from the waters of Taiwan, which led to the isolation of three capnellenes (1–3), including one new metabolite, 9(12)-capnellene-8β,10α,15-triol (1), along with two known metabolites, 9(12)-capnellene-5α,8β,10α-triol (2), and 9(12)-capnellene-8β,10α-diol (3). The structures of the isolated metabolites were elucidated through extensive spectroscopic analyses, while the relative stereochemistry of 3 was confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for the first time in this study. Compounds 1–3 were evaluated in terms of their anti-inflammatory activity by examining their inhibitory effects on the generation of superoxide anions and the release of elastase by human neutrophils. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

Enhancing patient self-management after a first stroke: An application of the wearable devices and the health management platform

Background: Post-stroke disability restricts a patient's physical activity, affects the patient's quality of life, and leads to higher medical costs. Therefore, it is essential to promote patients' continuous exercise during this period of recovery. Objective: This study aimed to verify the effectiveness of applying a health management platform combined with wearable devices to enhance stroke patients’ self-management of recovery and to allow comparisons with active care intervention management. Method: This quasi-experimental study aimed at examining those participants who had sustained a stroke for the first time. A 90-day experiment was implemented with the intervention of monitoring and active care from the researchers who also interviewed the selected participants at the end of the study. A total of 26 participants were examined (14 in the experimental group and 12 in the control group). Result: The participants in the experimental group made significant progress between the pre- and post-tests. Firstly, their six-minute walking distance improved by 89.5 m (p < 0.001). Secondly, their sit-to-stand transfers in 60 s improved 2.85 times (p = 0.017), and their Berg balance test improved by 6.36 points (p = 0.003). Finally, the Partners in Health scale (PIH) scores also improved. According to the data collected in the interviews, the researchers' intervention improved the patients’ self-management ability. Conclusion: The short-term physical performance in the experimental group after the intervention was better than that in the control group. In clinical practice, it is suggested that continuous interaction between medical staff and patients be sustained while applying wearable devices to promote the patient's self-management ability. © 2022 The Authors

We have investigated the physical properties of Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) located in the Galactic Plane, using the JCMT Plane Survey (JPS) and the SCUBA-2 Continuum Observations of Pre-protostellar Evolution (SCOPE) survey. By utilizing a suite of molecular-line surveys, velocities, and distances were assigned to the compact sources within the PGCCs, placing them in a Galactic context. The properties of these compact sources show no large-scale variations with Galactic environment. Investigating the star-forming content of the sample, we find that the luminosity-to-mass ratio (L/M) is an order of magnitude lower than in other Galactic studies, indicating that these objects are hosting lower levels of star formation. Finally, by comparing ATLASGAL sources that are associated or are not associated with PGCCs, we find that those associated with PGCCs are typically colder, denser, and have a lower L/M ratio, hinting that PGCCs are a distinct population of Galactic Plane sources. © 2024 The Author(s).

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the selective loss of spinal motor neurons (MNs) and concomitant muscle weakness. Mutation of is known to cause SMA, and restoring SMN protein levels via antisense oligonucleotide treatment is effective for ameliorating symptoms. However, this approach is hindered by exorbitant costs, invasive procedures, and poor treatment responses of some patients. Here, we seek to circumvent these hurdles by identifying reliable biomarkers that could predict treatment efficacy. We uncovered that MiR34 exhibits consistent downregulation during SMA progression in both human and rodent contexts. Importantly, family-knockout mice display axon swelling and reduced neuromuscular junction (NMJ) endplates, recapitulating SMA pathology. Introducing MiR34a via scAAV9 improved the motor ability of SMNΔ7 mice, possibly by restoring NMJ endplate size. Finally, we observed a consistent decreasing trend in MiR34 family expression in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of type I SMA patients during the loading phase of nusinersen treatment. Baseline CSF MiR34 levels before nusinersen injection proved predictive of patient motor skills 1 year later. Thus, we propose that MiR34 may serve as a biomarker of SMA since it is associated with the pathology and can help evaluate the therapeutic effects of nusinersen.

Kilonova spectra provide us with information of r-process nucleosynthesis in neutron star mergers. However, it is still challenging to identify individual elements in the spectra mainly due to lack of experimentally accurate atomic data for heavy elements in the near-infrared wavelengths. Recently, Domoto et al. (2022) proposed the absorption features around 14500 Å in the observed spectra of GW170817/AT2017gfo as Ce III lines. But they used theoretical transition probabilities (gf-values) whose accuracy is uncertain. In this paper, we derive the astrophysical gf-values of the three Ce III lines, aiming at verification of this identification. We model high resolution H-band spectra of four F-type supergiants showing the clear Ce III absorption features by assuming stellar parameters derived from optical spectra in literatures. We also test the validity of the derived astrophysical gf-values by estimating Ce III abundances in Ap stars. We find that the derived astrophysical gf-values of the Ce III lines are systematically lower by about 0.25 dex than those used in previous work of kilonovae, while they are still compatible within the uncertainty range. By performing radiative transfer simulations of kilonovae with the derived gf-values, we find that the identification of Ce III as a source of the absorption features in the observed kilonova spectra still stands, even considering the uncertainties in the astrophysical gf-values. Chromatographic investigation on the ethyl acetate extract of the soft coral Lobophytum durum collected from the waters of Guishan Island in northeast Taiwan resulted in the isolation of three sterols 1–3, including one novel sterol, 3β-hydroxy-25-methylene-5-cholesten-7-one (1), and two previously reported sterols, 7-oxogorgosterol (2), and (24S)-ergostane-3β,5α,6β,25-tetraol 25-monoacetate (3). The structures of sterols 1–3 were determined by extensive spectroscopic data analysis and by comparison with those previously reported in the literature. Additionally, the absolute configuration of sterol 3 was identified by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for the first time in this study. The anti-inflammatory activities of sterols 1–3 were evaluated by examining their inhibitory effects on the generation of superoxide anions and the release of elastase by human neutrophils. © 2023, The Authors. Subjects with metabolic syndrome (MetS) commonly have atrial remodeling, which indicates a risk for atrial fibrillation. This study determined MetS-related changes in lipid components in very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), which has been shown to cause atrial remodeling, the effect of statins on these changes, and the correlation between atrial remodeling and VLDL lipid compositions. Blood samples were collected from 12 non-MetS and 27 sex- and age-matched MetS subjects. Fourteen patients with MetS (MetS-off statin) discontinued statin therapy 14 days before the study, while the remaining 13 remained on it (MetS-on statin). The VLDLs were isolated and processed for mass-based lipid profiling. Lipidomic analyses were performed and associated with atrial remodeling markers measured using standard echocardiography and electrocardiography. Compared with the VLDL components of the non-MetS group, glucosyl/galactosyl ceramide, lyso-phosphatidylcholine, lyso-phosphatidylethanolamine, and triglycerides were enriched in the MetS-off statin group. Statin therapy attenuated all abnormally abundant lipid classes in MetS, except for triglycerides. In addition, lyso-phosphatidylcholine, lyso-phosphatidylethanolamine, and triglycerides were significantly correlated with atrial dilatation, and the latter two were also correlated with the PR interval. Enrichment of double bonds, which indicate unsaturated fatty acids, was also significantly correlated with atrial remodeling and P-wave duration. This study suggests that the pathological lipid payload of MetS-VLDL may contribute to atrial remodeling in patients. © 2023, The Author(s).
