Free water surface constructed wetlands: review of pollutant removal performance and modeling approaches

Free water surface constructed wetlands (FWSCWs) for the treatment of various wastewater types have evolved significantly over the last few decades. With an increasing need and interest in FWSCWs applications worldwide due to their cost-effectiveness and other benefits, this paper reviews recent literature on FWSCWs' ability to remove different types of pollutants such as nutrients (i.e., TN, TP, NH4-N), heavy metals (i.e., Fe, Zn, and Ni), antibiotics (i.e., oxytetracycline, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, sulfamethazine, and ofloxacin), and pesticides (i.e., Atrazine, S-Metolachlor, imidacloprid, lambda-cyhalothrin, diuron 3,4-dichloroanilin, Simazine, and Atrazine) that may co-exist in wetland inflow, and discusses approaches for simulating hydraulic and pollutant removal processes. A bibliometric analysis of recent literature reveals that China has the highest number of publications, followed by the USA. The collected data show that FWSCWs can remove an average of 61.6%, 67.8%, 54.7%, and 72.85% of inflowing nutrients, heavy metals, antibiotics, and pesticides, respectively. Optimizing each pollutant removal process requires specific design parameters. Removing heavy metal requires the lowest hydraulic retention time (HRT) (average of 4.78 days), removing pesticides requires the lowest water depth (average of 0.34 m), and nutrient removal requires the largest system size. Vegetation, especially Typha spp. and Phragmites spp., play an important role in FWSCWs' system performance, making significant contributions to the removal process. Various modeling approaches (i.e., black-box and process-based) were comprehensively reviewed, revealing the need for including the internal process mechanisms related to the biological processes along with plants spp., that supported by a further research with field study validations. The fate and effects of fluoroquinolone antibacterial (FQ) on the environment are important since there appears to be a surge in FQ resistance like enrofloxacin (ENR) in both environmental and clinical organisms. Numerous reports indicate that the sensing capabilities of these antibiotics need to be improved. Here, we have investigated the interaction of ENR with our synthesized pentacenequinone-modulated gadolinium-tin (GdSn-PQ) nanosheets and the formation of intermolecular interactions that caused the occurrence of aggregation-induced emission enhancement. The concept for designing hybrid metallic nanosheets comes from the unique features inherited from the parent organic precursor. Due to the distinct interaction between ENR and GdSn-PQ, the interstate conversion (ISC) between GdSn-PQ and ENR induces a significant wavelength shift in photoluminescence (PL), improving reliability, selectivity, and visibility compared to quenching- or AIEE-based methods without peak shifts, allowing for highly sensitive and visually detectable analyses. The fluorescence signal of GdSn-PQ exhibited a linear relationship (R2 = 0.9911), with the added ENR concentrations ranging from 5 to 90 nM, with a detection limit of 0.10 nM. We have demonstrated its potential and wide use in the detection of ENR in biological samples (human urine and blood serum) and environmental samples (tap water and seawater) with a recovery rate of 98- 108%. The current approach has demonstrated that the 2D GdSn-PQ nanosheet is a novel and powerful platform for future biological and environmental studies. © 2024 The Authors. The cyber-physical production system (CPPS) was developed for the interconnection between operational technology (OT) and information and communication technology (ICT) among the machines and decentralized production control. However, OT and ICT are now getting more complex in the modern industry. To enhance industrial management and production process, the CPPS based on the 5G architecture under production environments can provide a more comprehensive solution in the context of Industry 4.0. For this purpose, a 5G CPPS model to improve the interoperability of CPPS in ICT and OT is proposed to build a virtualized Industry 4.0 asset management shell system. First, real-time task artifacts and 5G communication modules are bound in a certain form of virtualization. Second, task artifacts are released to the production line in a real-time scheduling. Third, an order is placed on a production line and split into multiple tasks for production process. Single-machine single-workpiece and multi-machine and multi-workpiece processing cases are used for testing in the production line. Experimental results show that the proposed 5G CPPS can efficiently achieve multi-machine work piece processing. © 2022, The Author(s).

Effects of Exercise Training on Immune-Related Genes and Pathways in the Cortex of Animal Models of Alzheimer’s Disease: A Systematic Review

Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that affects the immune system due to the accumulation of amyloid-b (Ab) and tau associated molecular pathology and other pathogenic processes. To address AD pathogenesis, various approaches had been conducted from drug development to lifestyle modification to reduce the prevalence of AD. Exercise is considered a prominent lifestyle modification to combat AD. Objective: This observation prompted us to review the literature on exercise related to immune genes in the cortex of animal models of AD. We focused on animal model studies due to their prevalence in this domain. Methods: The systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA standards using Web of science (WoS) and PubMed databases. Any kind of genes, proteins, and molecular molecules were included in this systematic review. The list of these immune-related molecules was analyzed in the STRING database for functional enrichment analysis. Results: We found that 17 research studies discussed immune-related molecules and 30 immune proteins. These studies showed that exercise had the ability to ameliorate dysfunction in AD-related pathways, which led to decreasing the expression of microglia-related pathways and Th17-related immune pathways. As a result of decreasing the expression of immune-related pathways, the expression of apoptosis-related pathways was also decreasing, and neuronal survival was increased by exercise activity. Conclusions: Based on functional enrichment analysis, exercise not only could reduce apoptotic factors and immune components but also could increase cell survival and Ab clearance in cortex samples. Owing to the advancement of bioactive materials, bioactive glasses (BGs) are progressively being recognized as promising choices in fields of bone and tissue engineering with their superior properties such as bioactivity and biocompatibility. However, their applications are limited by the fact that the material itself does not possess antibacterial properties. To address this limitation, antibacterial BGs with silver-zinc co-dopant were proposed and successfully synthesized via the one-step spray pyrolysis technique in this work. The phase composition, chemical composition, surface morphology, and nanoscale structures of the obtained BG specimens were characterized using X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, in-vitro bioactivity was assessed through immersion of the SBF solution, while the in-vitro antibacterial property was examined using Escherichia coli bacteria. Meanwhile, the viability of MC3T3-E1 osteoblast cells was evaluated using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. Finally, the results showed positive effects of zinc addition, and the influence of silver and zinc dopants on the in-vitro bioactivity, antibacterial property, and cell viability were discussed. © 2024 The Author(s). Increasing demand for wearable sensors for multipurpose applications have made it an essential part of our everyday life. In such a scenario;reusability, flexibility, cost effectiveness, and integrability of such sensors are among the top desirable features. Using our casual clothing as sensors can be one of the most effective ways for various therapeutic, diagnostic, and continuous monitoring functionalities. Conducting yarns, possibly, have the capability to deeply influence the 4th industrial revolution and rule the e-textile based smart wearables for wide range applications. Herein, we present a comparative experimental study of three different capacitive sensor structures for humidity sensing applications. These structures have been explored using conducting yarns having tungsten metal as core conducting materials. © 2023 IEEE.

How and when job passion promotes customer-oriented organizational citizenship behavior: A moderated mediation model

Customer-oriented organizational citizenship behavior (OCBC) is a crucial topic in the restaurant industry, yet few studies have explored how and when an employee's passion toward their job affects OCBC. This study examined the relationship between the job passion of restaurant employees, employee resilience, and OCBC. The mediation effect of employee resilience and the moderating effect of employee mindfulness were also investigated. A questionnaire survey was administered to 471 frontline restaurant employees in Taiwan. The results demonstrated that harmonious passion and obsessive passion positively influence employee resilience, which positively influences OCBC. Employee resilience mediates the influences of harmonious and obsessive passion on OCBC. Furthermore, employee mindfulness strengthens the positive relationship between job passion and employee resilience, thereby facilitating OCBC. These findings supplement previous studies by elaborating the association between job passion and OCBC. Restaurant managers can apply these findings to human resource practices and service management. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Background and Aim: Among low viral load (DNA of hepatitis B virus (HBV) was < 2000 IU/mL), the factor of the loss of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) remained elusive. Methods: The retrospective study recruited patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) who were negative low for hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg), had a low viral load, and experienced HBsAg loss during follow-up. CHB patients with low-viral load but without consequent HBsAg loss were also enrolled at the ratio of 1:4. The factors contributing to HBsAg loss were analyzed. Results: A total of 80 patients were recruited for the current study, with a mean age of 63.9 years and 61.3% being male. Among them, 62.5% patients (50/80) were treated with potent nucleoside/nucleotide analogues (NAs) during the follow-up period. Additionally, 12.5% patients (10/80) had a prior history of NAs treatment before enrolment. During the follow-up, HBsAg loss occurred in 17 patients (21.3%). Compared with patients without HBsAg loss, those with HBsAg loss were younger (57.9 years vs 65.5 years;P = 0.01), had lower HBV DNA levels (1.3 log₁₀ IU/mL vs 2.3 log₁₀ IU/mL;P = 0.003), and higher proportion of prior NAs-treated history. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the factors associated with factors associated with HBsAg loss were age < 60 years (OR/CI: 3.95/1.15–13.60, P = 0.03), prior NAs-treated history (OR/CI: 7.59/1.42–40.51, P = 0.01) and current NAs-treated (OR/CI: 0.19/0.05–0.71, P = 0.01). Conclusions: In the study, older age and prior NAs were positively associated with HBsAg loss, and current NAs was negatively associated with HBsAg loss. We present the binary model and the eclipse timing variations of the eclipsing binary RR Cae, which consists of a white dwarf eclipsed by an M-type dwarf companion. The multiwavelength optical photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), the 0.6-m PROMPT-8 telescope, and the 0.7-m Thai Robotic Telescope at Spring Brook Observatory, combined with archive H α radial velocities from the Very Large Telescope (VLT) are analysed. From the data, the physical parameters of the system are obtained along with 430 new times of minima. The TESS light curves in 2018 and 2020 show out-of-eclipse variations, which might be caused by a large spot on the secondary component. The light travel time effect models due to the gravitational interaction of one or two circumbinary objects are adopted to fit the cyclic variations in the RR Cae’s O-C curve. The fitting solution of the O-C curve with one circumbinary object model shows a periodic variation with a period of 16.6 ± 0.2 yr and an amplitude of 14 ± 1 s, which can be caused by a planet with a minimum mass of 3.4 ± 0.2 MJup. When we consider the model with two circumbinary objects, the O-C curve shows cyclic variations with periods of 15.0 ± 0.5 yr and 39 ± 5 yr and amplitudes of 12 ± 1 s and 20 ± 5 s, respectively, corresponding to minimum masses of 3.0 ± 0.3 MJup and 2.7 ± 0.7 MJup © 2023 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of Royal Astronomical Society.
