Measuring emotions in educational settings can provide important information in predicting and explaining student learning outcomes. Knowledge of student’s classroom emotions can also help teachers understand their students’ learning behaviors, improve their teaching methods, and optimize students’ learning and development. However, it can be highly challenging for teachers to monitor and accurately understand student emotions within classroom or group contexts, especially while they are actively teaching and attending to many students simultaneously. Video recording classroom activity can address that issue as high-definition cameras can be used to continuously record groups of students, enabling online or offline analyses of student emotions and supplementing teacher monitoring, retrieval, and interpretation of those processes. Teachers find it difficult to use existing emotion recognition methods to analyze student behaviors in videos due to a lack of user-friendly interfaces that facilitate automatic analysis. To address this challenge, we developed EmoRoom, an open-source tool designed to simplify the annotation and analysis of videos from an emotional perspective. EmoRoom tool offers a practical solution for quantifying and visualizing the frequency of emotions for individuals of interest. Furthermore, it can assist teachers in refining their teaching methods by offering a comprehensive overview of students’ emotional experiences during learning. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

End-to-end Multi-Instance Robotic Reaching from Monocular Vision

Multi-instance scenes are especially challenging for end-to-end visuomotor (image-to-control) learning algorithms. "Pipeline" visual servo control algorithms use separate detection, selection and servo stages, allowing algorithms to focus on a single object instance during servo control. End-to-end systems do not have separate detection and selection stages and need to address the visual ambiguities introduced by the presence of arbitrary number of visually identical or similar objects during servo control. However, end-to-end schemes avoid embedding errors from detection and selection stages in the servo control behaviour, are more dynamically robust to changing scenes, and are algorithmically simpler. In this paper, we present a real-time end-to-end visuomotor learning algorithm for multi-instance reaching. The proposed algorithm uses a monocular RGB image and the manipulator's joint angles as the input to a light-weight fully-convolutional network (FCN) to generate control candidates. A key innovation of the proposed method is identifying the optimal control candidate by regressing a control-Lyapunov function (cLf) value. The multi-instance capability emerges naturally from the stability analysis associated with the cLf formulation. We demonstrate the proposed algorithm effectively reaching and grasping objects from different categories on a table-top amid other instances and distractors from an over-the-shoulder monocular RGB camera. The network is able to run up to ∼160 fps during inference on one GTX 1080 Ti GPU. © 2024, CC BY.

A 1-bit reconfigurable phase shifter for 28 GHz mm-wave beam steering antennas is proposed. The design uses two beam-lead GaAs PIN diodes loaded on a microstrip transmission line in parallel, to provide two discrete phases for the transmitted signal. When the diodes are switched OFF, no shift in the phase of the transmitted signal is observed while a phase shift of 90° is achieved when the diodes are switched ON. The total length of the phase shifter is ∼λ/2. The compact size, low cost, reduced complexity and easy adaptation in antenna and phased array technology makes it a suitable candidate for 5G mm-wave beam steering applications. © 2023 IEEE.

TensorMD: Scalable Tensor-Diagram based Machine Learning Interatomic Potential on Heterogeneous Many-Core Processors

Molecular dynamics simulations have emerged as a potent tool for investigating the physical properties and kinetic behaviors of materials at the atomic scale, particularly in extreme conditions. Ab initio accuracy is now achievable with machine learning based interatomic potentials. With recent advancements in high-performance computing, highly accurate and large-scale simulations become feasible. This study introduces TensorMD, a new machine learning interatomic potential (MLIP) model that integrates physical principles and tensor diagrams. The tensor formalism provides a more efficient computation and greater flexibility for use with other scientific codes. Additionally, we proposed several portable optimization strategies and developed a highly optimized version for the new Sunway supercomputer. Our optimized TensorMD can achieve unprecedented performance on the new Sunway, enabling simulations of up to 52 billion atoms with a time-to-solution of 31 ps/step/atom, setting new records for HPC + AI + MD. This research presents a design and analysis of an open-loop microstrip resonator which is integrated with a microwave sensor system. It is used for measuring a binary-liquid mixed concentration of sodium chloride (NaCl) and DI-water to detect salinity level. The open-loop resonator is designed to provide a band-stop bandwidth of 1 GHz, which has operated from 2 GHz to 3 GHz. The proposed microwave sensor system consists of a microwave synthesizer, a voltage detector, and an open-loop resonator that is designed to operate at 3 GHz to characterize the salinity level of the sample liquid mixture. A liquid mixture samples of NaCl and Distill-water with 5 different concentration levels of 0%, 2%, 5%, 10%, and 20% were used to assess the salinity level for the proposed microwave sensor system. © 2023 IEEE.

The Sunway family supercomputers have achieved a series of remarkable achievements. However, the toolchains provided by them are not perfect, which has brought great challenges to the development of high-performance application software. In this paper, a profiling and optimizing tool is proposed to assist people to analyze and optimize the performance of their programs. SWPFOPLD is independent of the application program and gathers the runtime performance data through the PMUs, an automatically hot functions rearrange optimization based on the performance data is furtherly accomplished. The evaluation shows that SWPFOPLD can be easily and effectively used to analyze and optimize the performance of the application programs.

In computer science, substring search or string Matching is a vulnerable problem when text resources are very large. Productivity of diverse scraping applications depend on the effectiveness of searching algorithms. Palindrome string finding is one of these problems which has its use in many applications. The problem is about finding the number of palindrome substrings within a string. This paper discusses a naive and dynamic programming-based algorithm for finding several palindrome strings. The time complexity of algorithm has also been analyzed and an effort has been made to improve it. © 2023 IEEE.

The precise estimation of performance loss rate (PLR) of photovoltaic (PV) systems is vital for reducing investment risks and increasing the bankability of the technology. Until recently, the PLR of fielded PV systems was mainly estimated through the extraction of a linear trend from a time series of performance indicators. However, operating PV systems exhibit failures and performance losses that cause variability in the performance and may bias the PLR results obtained from linear trend techniques. Change-point (CP) methods were thus introduced to identify nonlinear trend changes and behaviour. The aim of this work is to perform a comparative analysis among different CP techniques for estimating the annual PLR of eleven grid-connected PV systems installed in Cyprus. Outdoor field measurements over an 8-year period (June 2006-June 2014) were used for the analysis. The obtained results when applying different CP algorithms to the performance ratio time series (aggregated into monthly blocks) demonstrated that the extracted trend may not always be linear but sometimes can exhibit nonlinearities. The application of different CP methods resulted to PLR values that differ by up to 0.85% per year (for the same number of CPs/segments). © 2022 IEEE.

Employing couplers to convert guided waves into free-space modes and flexibly control their wavefront is one of the key technologies in chip-integrated displays and *** couplers are mainly composed of gratings,which have limitations in footprint,bandwidth,as well as *** the resonant/geometric metasurface newly emerges as a promising interface for bridging guided waves with free-space ones,it either relies on complex optimizations of multiple parameters,or is subject to the locked phase response of opposite spins,both of which hinder the functional diversity and practical multiplexing ***,we propose and experimentally demonstrate an alternative with a spin-decoupled meta-coupler,simultaneously integrating triple functions of guided wave radiation,polarization demultiplexing,and dual-channel wavefront manipulation into a single *** endowing polarization-dependent functionalities into a pure geometric metasurface,the out-coupled left-handed and right-handed circular polarization guided waves intelligently identify the predesigned phase modulation and reconstruct desired wavefronts,like bifocal focusing and holography multiplexing,with a polarization extinction ratio over 13.4 dB in *** envision that the robust,broadband,and multifunctional meta-coupler could pave a way for the development of versatile multiplexed waveguide-based devices.
