Needs analysis-based design principles for constructing a context-aware english learning system

In response to the needs of an international workforce, english for Specific Purpose courses are being promoted in higher education, and instructors are turning to learning technology to help design the instruction. In this paper, a needs analysis was conducted to guide the design of the system, materials and activities for context-aware ubiquitous language learning (CAULL) and english for Fitness Purposes (eFP) in a fitness center as part of a Design-Based Research project. The data collection methods included on-site observations, semi-structured interviews, and a questionnaire. The participants included 82 undergraduate students, seven physical education (Pe) instructors, and six non-Pe faculty members who frequently used the fitness center. All data forms were then triangulated and analyzed. The results show that all three groups consistently agreed that they need receptive language skills as well as specific terminology for fitness. Furthermore, it was suggested that the oral communication skills for eFP learners should also be developed for sharing ideas, experience, and suggestions. They pointed out that vocabulary related to diverse topics such as warm-up and cool-down stretches, cardiovascular exercises, and weight training are needed. Furthermore, participants reported that the CAULL system should be hypermedia-based, and contain a portfolio and a user-friendly interface. The findings were used to develop a blue print for a CAULL system based on design principles. In the era of the global village, frequent cross-border trade in goods has made container transportation a significant part in delivery of cargo. However, rollover accidents of container trucks often occur because of tall truck height, improper cargo stowage or crooked roads. Therefore, how to find the optimal center of gravity (CG) of the packed cargo remains an issue that the transportation industry should not neglect. To optimize cargo stability and reduce the incidence of rollovers, this paper proposes a genetic algorithm that scores the cargo stacking process to find the best CG of the cargo based on the CG of the vehicle. According to the deviation angle and the point closest to the best CG, we can Figure out the optimal cargo stacking method.

ABSTRACTFacilitating decision making in authentic contexts is an important educational objective of professional training. To enable learners to have more opportunities to practice in authentic contexts under the guidance of instructors, the flipped learning mode of shifting the lectures to be the pre-class activity with the presentation of digital media has gradually been receiving attention. However, the conventional flipped learning mostly uses videos to present teaching content. In such a learning environment with one-way information and lack of experience, it is not easy for most learners to experience the actual situation encountered in the nursing procedure, which affects their judgment and performance when dealing with actual scenarios. To solve this problem, the present study adopted spherical video-based virtual reality (SVVR) to provide an experiential learning mode in flipped learning. To verify the effects of this teaching mode, this study conducted an experiment in a blood transfusion safety training course. The experimental group used the SVVR-based experiential flipped learning (SVVR-eFL) mode, while the control group used the conventional flipped learning mode. The results showed that using the SVVR-eFL mode not only enhanced new nursing staff’s learning achievement, but also increased their decision-making performance, meta-cognition tendency, problem-solving tendency and classroom engagement.

The physiological function of the Mu rhythm (8–13 Hz in the central region) is still unclear, particularly its role in visuomotor performance in sports (shooting vs. golf putting), as both the complexity of the motor skills (i.e., simple vs. complex visuomotor skills) and the skill level (e.g., novices vs. experts or low-skilled vs. highly skilled) may modulate Mu rhythm. To gain a broader understanding of the association between Mu rhythm and visuomotor skill performance, a study design that considers both a control moderator (the difference in skill level) and the ability to manipulate Mu rhythm (i.e., either increase or decrease Mu rhythm) is required. To achieve this, we recruited 30 novice golfers who were randomly assigned to either the increased Mu rhythm group (IMG), decreased Mu rhythm group (DMG), or sham group (SG) and used electroencephalographic-neurofeedback training (eeG-NFT) to manipulate Mu rhythm during a golf putting task (complex visuomotor skill). The aim was to determine whether the complexity of the motor skill was a potential moderator of Mu rhythm. We mainly found that Mu power was significantly decreased in the DMG following eeG-NFT, which lead to increased motor control and improved performance. We suggest that (1) the complexity of the motor skill, rather than the difference in skill level, may be a potential moderator of Mu rhythm and visuomotor performance, as our results were not consistent with a previous study that reported that increased Mu rhythm improved shooting performance (a simple visuomotor task) in novices. © 2022, The Author(s).

Fine-grained bird image classification (FBIC) plays a critical role in robotic vision tracking and monitoring of endangered bird species. Traditional surveillance robots often face major challenges when operating in complex environments, especially under extreme conditions involving occlusions and complex backgrounds. To overcome these limitations, we developed a novel bionic intelligent surveillance robot that incorporates FSLNet - a fine-grained skeletal learning network that integrates skeletal tokens into a Vision Transformer (ViT) framework. Unlike traditional CNN-based models, FSLNet leverages skeletal tokens to capture key invariant features, improving the ability to distinguish between visually similar bird species under challenging circumstances. The architecture of our model includes visual token construction, skeleton token construction, and a transformer-based backbone for thorough feature learning. extensive experiments on CUB-200-2011 and NABirds datasets demonstrate that our method achieves superior performance compared to state-of-the-art approaches.

engagement is critical to computational thinking and programming education. However, as multi-dimensional variables, when analyzing how different aspects of engagement in computational thinking tasks influence skills development, it becomes crucial to discern precisely which engagement components intersect with the progression of computational thinking skills. This discernment is pivotal because engagement can vary based on the task nature, the context, and the individual's preferences. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the gender differences in engagement and computational thinking skills and the predictive relationships among these sub-dimensions for boys and girls in an unplugged environment. In this study, a quasi-experiment for 90 sixth-grade students from a north Chinese primary school was performed. By partial least squares–structural equation modeling, students’ models of computational thinking skills and engagement were analyzed, and comparisons of boys and girls were made by analysis of covariance statistics. Results indicated that compared with boys, girls reported higher computational thinking performance and more engagement in unplugged contexts. Furthermore, girls’ computational thinking skills were only predicted by their cognitive engagement, whereas boys’ computational thinking skills were predicted by their behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. Teachers can adopt these findings to design computational thinking teaching interventions that combine the advantages of unplugged activity and focus on the engagement of boys and girls. © 2024

This work presents a prototype and preliminary evaluation experiments of a management conversational assistant for software engineering teams. Such teams commonly rely on text chat for communications using specialized collaboration platforms such as Slack or Microsoft Teams. A conversational assistant integrated into these platforms can help in several tasks related to project and team management, thus benefiting both managers and software developers. The proposed design of the conversational assistant is described in terms of its architectural design and interaction design, and the important design decisions are explained. Preliminary evaluation shows that the proposed chatbot can be used effectively to interact with users reactively and proactively over public and private channels. However, for better results, a specific intent classifier should be used for each combination of user roles and channel types. In addition, interacting to messages with unspecified target over public channels is affected by the relatively limited intent classifier accuracy and still requires improvement. © 2021 Ieee.

technology-mediated learning has become a valuable tool, especially in the english language classroom. Nowadays, mobile learning is considered a significant educational tool for promoting education among learners. Several recent studies have attempted to examine different aspects of mobile learning. The size of the experimental group, and the duration and suitability of the assessment methods are important aspects in designing experimental studies in the context of mobile english language learning. Yet, very few studies have paid attention to these aspects. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the utilisation of state-of-the-art mobile technology in english language learning, especially in terms of the size of the experimental groups, and the duration and suitability of the assessment methods. Following a systematic review protocol, 151 articles published between 2010 and 2017 were selected for analysis. Furthermore, this study considered, separately, three factors addressed in the reviewed studies: language acquisition problems, types of participants, and targeted english skills. The findings showed that thegroup sizeandstudy durationsignificantly differed among the studies based on the above factors. Questionnaires and tests were found to be the most common methods ofassessmentfor each factor, whether used separately or in combination. The results of this review can assist in the formulation of experimental designs to mitigate the challenges and facilitate the effective use of mobile learning in english language learning.

The semiconductor industry is experiencing an accelerated transformation to overcome the scaling limits of the transistor and to adapt to new requirements in terms of data storage and computation, especially driven by artificial intelligence applications and the Internet of Things. In this process, new materials, devices, integration strategies and system architectures are being developed and optimized. Among them, memristive devices and circuits—memristors are two-terminal memory devices that can also mimic some basic bioelectronic functions—offer a potential approach to create more compact, energy-efficient or better-performing systems. The memristor industry is growing quickly, raising abundant capital investment, creating new jobs and placing advanced products in the market. Here we analyse the status and prospects of the memristor industry, focusing on memristor-based products that are already commercially available, prototypes with a high technological readiness level that might affect the market in the near future, and discuss obstacles and pathways to their implementation. © Springer Nature Limited 2025.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanocomposite (NC) films with 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 wt% of Zinc doped Cerium oxide (ZnCeO3) nanoparticles were developed by a modified solution casting technique. Wherein, the modified solution casting technique, facilitated a rapid solvent removal and speedy film formation. The developed NC films were characterized for their gross structural, micro-structural, morphological and optical characteristics using various analytical tools. The characterized NC films were then explored for UVB shielding applications. The ability of PVA/ZnCeO3 NC films to shield UVB radiations were ascertained by monitoring the UVB induced denaturation of tender coconut extracted deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The DNA degradation kinetics ascertained that, PVA/ZnCeO3 NC film packaged DNA samples, showed appreciable stability against undesirable photo-oxidative effects of high energy UVB radiations. While, UV transilluminator measurements validated the principle following the UVB protective effects of PVA/ZnCeO3 NC films. Further, the inherent ability of PVA/ZnCeO3 NCs to display UVB radiation provoked visible (fluorescent blue) light emission, support their possible usage as UVB protective packaging materials and UVB leakage monitors. © 2024, The Authors.
