Development of the new media literacy scale for eFL learners in China: a validation study

ABSTRACTABSTRACTThe emergence of new media technologies has empowered individuals to not merely consume but also create, share and critique media contents. Such activities are dependent on new media literacy (NML) necessary for living and working in the participatory culture of the twenty-first century. Although a burgeoning body of research has focused on the conceptualization of NML, limited studies have explored english as a foreign language (eFL) learners’ new media literacy. Considering the importance of NML for eFL learning and teaching, this quantitative study aims to develop and validate a research instrument for assessing eFL learners’ new media literacy (eNML) in China. Confirmatory factor analysis was employed to further examine the relationships among the different indicators of eNML. The sample consisted of 974 eFL learners (669 males, 305 females) from a comprehensive university in China. A comparison of the five proposed models indicated that all of them were acceptable, including a first-order model and four second-order models. The first-order model includes 10 indicators: consuming skill, understanding, analysis, synthesis, evaluation, prosuming skill, distribution, production, participation, and feedback. The other four second-order models describe the relationships among the 10 indicators of eNML. These results along with their implications for further research are also elaborated.

The study uses machine learning to determine the accuracy of different algorithms for predicting MetS. early prediction of MetS through routine health screening is an important goal for preventive medicine. The subjects in this study were employees aged 20 to 65 years old who signed a consent form for in-hospital health screening data were collected from 2015 to 2020. Total of 3538 individuals who underwent health screening were included in this study. Baseline characteristics of the 315 participants diagnosed with metabolic syndrome and 3222 participants without metabolic syndrome. This is a machine learning approach to identify metabolic syndrome using biochemical values and lifestyle habits. We found that the F1 score for detection of metabolic syndrome by neural network is the most accurate and higher compared to other models. Our study also identified some new indicators, including heart rhythm, RBC, WBC, Hb, and uric acid, as candidates for better detection of metabolic syndrome. © 2023 Ieee.

Fine-grained Bird Image Recognition dedicates to achieve accurate bird image classification and it is also a fundamental task in robot vision tracking. Given that endangered bird surveillance and conservation is of great significance for bird protection from extinction, automated approaches are in need to facilitate bird surveillance. In this work, we propose a novel robot vision tracking based method for bird surveillance with an affinity relation-aware model named TBNet that combines CNN and Transformer architecture and has a novel feature selection (FS) module. Specifically, CNN is employed to extract superficial information. Transformer is utilized for exploiting abstract semantic affinity relations. FS module is introduced to reveal discriminative features. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that can achieve state-of-the-art performance on the CUB-200-2011 dataset (91.0%) and the NABirds dataset (90.9%). © 2022 Ieee.

This study aimed to foster development of the 21st-century five core competencies, including Creativity and innovation, Critical thinking and problem solving, Communication, Collaboration, and Computer-information literacy using Student-Centered Active learning in an instructional design in which student groups created their own virtual reality content. Fifty humanities students participated. Mixed-methods data collection included a questionnaire, VR artifacts grades, student reflective journals, and focus group interviews. The most important findings were that (1) the instructional design of the study led to improvement in all of the five competencies of .01 significance or better (2) additional cycles of VR artifact production led to increases in empirical quality, and (3) the participants also found the hands-on VR creation projects to be distinctive and motivating. This VR content creation project provides detailed implications and guidance for instructors seeking to replicate a hands-on technology-oriented instructional design in order to strengthen the 21st-century core competencies.

Researchers have developed systems estimating mobile users’ receptivity for instant messaging (IM) [4]. However, it remains unclear how users would like their estimated status to be presented to their IM contacts. We developed an Android application that estimated a user’s receptivity status and conducted a mixed-method study with 37 IM users to understand how they wanted their estimated status to be presented, including eSM and semi-structured interviews. We found that participants preferred a textual presentation to show their receptivity status over both numeric and graphical presentation. Also, participants more often modified the status from showing interruptibility to showing attentiveness and/or responsiveness than the other way. It was because participants wanted their status more informative of how fast they could read and respond to messages. Participants also more often decreased their receptivity level than increased it to show that they were busy, either real or fake.

A memetic algorithm based on edge-state learning for max-cut

Max-cut is one of the most classic NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. The symmetry nature of it leads to special difficulty in extracting meaningful configuration information for learning;none of the state-of-the-art algorithms has employed any learning operators. This paper proposes an original learning method for max-cut, namely post-flip edge-state learning (PF-eSL). Different from previous algorithms, PF-eSL regards edge-states (cut or not cut) rather than vertex-positions as the critical information of a configuration, and extracts their statistics over a population for learning. It is based on following observations. 1) edges are the only factors considered by the objective function. 2) edge-states keep invariant when rotating a local configuration to its symmetry position, but vertex-positions do not. These suggest that edge-states contain more meaningful information about a configuration than vertex-positions do. It is impossible to set the state of an edge without influencing some other edges’ states due to their dependencies. Therefore, instead of setting edge-states directly, PF-eSL samples the flips on vertices. Flips on vertices are sampled according to their capacities in increasing the similarity on edge-states between the given solution and a population. PF-eSL is employed in an eDA (estimation of Distribution Algorithm) perturbation operator and a path-relinking operator. experimental results show that our algorithm is competitive, and show that edge-state learning is value-added for both the two operators. The main contributions of this paper are as follows. Firstly, previous state-of-the-art evolutionary algorithms for max-cut focus on vertex positions in their evolutionary operation, this paper proposes a new and more reasonable perspective suggesting that edge-states are the critical information of divided graphs rather than vertex positions, and introduces a novel method to measure and utilize their similarities based on it. Two new non-withanolidal steroids with a cross-conjugated dienone structural unit in ring A, capnesterones A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the soft coral Capnella imbricata in the southeast waters of Taiwan. The compounds' structures were elucidated through a comprehensive analysis of spectroscopic data, including IR, eSIMS, ¹H NMR, and ¹³C NMR, and through comparison with previous literature. At a concentration of 10 μM, steroids 1 and 2 exhibited reductions in iNOS levels (60 % and 82 %) compared to LPS-stimulated control cells, along with increased release (134 % and 110 %) against COX-2 protein expressions. © 2024 Phytochemical Society of europe

Deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) models have shown promise in drug response prediction (DRP), yet their ability to generalize across datasets remains an open question, raising concerns about their real-world applicability. Due to the lack of standardized benchmarking approaches, model evaluations and comparisons often rely on inconsistent datasets and evaluation criteria, making it difficult to assess true predictive capabilities. In this work, we introduce a benchmarking framework for evaluating cross-dataset prediction generalization in DRP models. Our framework incorporates five publicly available drug screening datasets, six standardized DRP models, and a scalable workflow for systematic evaluation. To assess model generalization, we introduce a set of evaluation metrics that quantify both absolute performance (e.g., predictive accuracy across datasets) and relative performance (e.g., performance drop compared to within-dataset results), enabling a more comprehensive assessment of model transferability. Our results reveal substantial performance drops when models are tested on unseen datasets, underscoring the importance of rigorous generalization assessments. While several models demonstrate relatively strong cross-dataset generalization, no single model consistently outperforms across all datasets. Furthermore, we identify CTRPv2 as the most effective source dataset for training, yielding higher generalization scores across target datasets. By sharing this standardized evaluation framework with the community, our study aims to establish a rigorous foundation for model comparison, and accelerate the development of robust DRP models for real-world applications. © 2025, CC BY.

Abstract: In this study, we investigate blood flow in a small artery with a constriction using gold nanoparticles (Au) in the presence of microorganisms, mass, and heat transfer. The non-Newtonian behavior of blood fluid in slight arteries is quantitatively inspected by simulating blood flow using the Carreau fluid model. Momentum equations incorporating magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and Darcy–Forchheimer porous media are used to model the fluid flow. Heat transfer properties, including thermal radiation, joule dissipation, and bio-convective microorganisms, are investigated. Blood serves as the base fluid for the nanofluid, which contains gold nanoparticles. The system's nonlinear partial differential equations are transformed into nonlinear ODes through suitable transformations. To obtain numerical solutions for these ODes, the homotopy analysis method is used. The physical implications of flow restrictions are compared with fictitious fluid flow using physical interpretations. Additionally, investigations into the interpretations of blood flow based on drag force and heat transfer are being conducted. ANOVA, or analysis of variance, is a dependable statistical tool used to evaluate regression models and a variety of statistical tests. These investigations include error assessments, total error evaluations, F-values, p-values, and model fit assessments. These statistical investigations were applied to the dataset at hand, with the goal of achieving a robust 95% level of confidence. We investigate the effects of minute adjustments in parameters on both the heat transfer rate and the friction factor rate using these analyses. The study intends to dive deeper into the potential effects of minor changes in one or more factors on the overall effectiveness of surface friction rate and the larger domain of thermal energy transfer.
