Presently, face recognition has two main barriers, which are the variation of illumination, expression, pose and the occlusion and disguise respectively. The problem of robust identification human faces with varying expression and illumination, as well as occlusion and disguise will be researched in this paper. Firstly, singular value decomposition will be used for the face image, casting the singular value vector of test face image as a linear combination of the singular value vectors of face database and used deformable model representation;then, match optimization deformable model for solving combinatorial coefficient;finally, according to the sparse nature of coefficients for classification, and use slice-weighted strategy to further improve the robustness. experimental results on extended Yale B Database and AR Database shows that this method is very effective for face recognition and can significantly improve the robustness and stability of disguise and occlusion.

Studies indicate that making learners feel good is important only minor to clear knowledge transformation. Many studies have tried to use virtual humans as a part of interface in learning systems to increase the effect of instructions. Based on social interaction and pedagogical theories, many e-learning systems use animated films or virtual reality to boost human-computer engagement and ease their negative emotions. However, affective learning systems still need much research to improve their functionalities and usability. This study proposed a convenient approach to develop an emotionally interactive learning system;learners can express their emotions by mouse-clicking while learning. A virtual human was created to empathically react to learners in proactive and reactive ways to encourage and persuade them into persistent learning and help achieve their goals. experimental results show that, averagely, subjects can tell virtual human's emotions and agree to its empathic reactions. Persuasion conducted by virtual human could not increase subjects' learning time, but could significantly increase their completion rate of exercises. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Humor has a great influence on students' cognition, emotion and motivation when they're learning. There are many researchers studying how humor can be used in the classroom to increase students' performance, while few researching on how to design a humorous virtual human to better students' learning performance in e-learning environment. In this paper, some humorous strategies were adapted and expressed by virtual human to affect students' learning at proper moments. Preliminary experiment was conducted and the results showed that the virtual human with humorous strategies can ease students' emotions and motivate them.

The purpose of this multiyear study is to combine the voice recognition technology with a tangible learning companion/robot which our research team developed to enhance english learning conversation for beginners. In this study, we collected the users needs analysis of using tangible learning companion first then did a pilot test to analyze its usability. The results show that the learners improved their pronunciation to achieve right voice recognition through practicing with the learning companion and the tangible learning companion can promote the less proficient learners confidence. Moreover, we also noticed that learning with the tangible learning companion could increase the pleasure of learning speaking english and tactile interactions between learners. © 2009 Ieee.

Covalently stabilized temperature and pH responsive four-layer nanoparticles fabricated from surface 'clickable' shell cross-linked micelles

Alkynyl-terminated double hydrophilic ABC triblock copolymer, poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether methacrylate)-b-poly(2- (dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(2-(diethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) (alkynyl-POeGMA-b-PDMA-b-PDeA), was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) by sequential monomer addition using propargyl 2-bromoisobutyrate (PgBiB) as the initiator. The obtained triblock copolymer dissolves molecularly in acidic media and self-assembles into alkynyl surface-functionalized three-layer "onion-like" micelles consisting of a PDeA core, a PDMA inner shell, and a POeGMA corona at alkaline pH. Selective cross-linking of the PDMA inner shell with 2-bis(2-iodoethoxy)ethane (BIee) results in structurally stable and surface 'clickable' shell cross-linked (SCL) micelles with pH-responsive PDeA cores. This new kind of SCL micelles could be further surface functionalized or conjugated with other azido- terminated polymer chains, functional groups, or biomolecules via Click chemistry. Four layer nanoparticles (SCL-PNIPAM) which have pH-responsive PDeA cores and temperature responsive PNIPAM outer coronas were fabricated from surface 'clickable' shell cross-linked (SCL) micelles and azide-terminated poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM-N3) using Click chemistry. These novel four layer nanoparticles might act as suitable nano-sized drug delivery vehicles for the encapsulation and release of hydrophobic drugs as a function of either temperature or pH of the environment. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2009.

The effect of an internet-based, stage-matched message intervention on young taiwanese women's physical activity

A web-based, stage-matched message intervention was designed in order to see the effect on the physical activity of young Taiwanese women with regard to several variables. The intervention was guided by the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) and was evaluated using a pre-post-test control group design. One hundred thirty female freshmen, enrolled in a nursing class in a university in Taipei, completed the survey at three different points in time. They were assigned to three groups: an experimental group with stage-matched messages on the website, a generic group with non-stage-matched messages on the website, and a control group that was given only lectures but had no access to the website. Results indicated that the subjects in the stage-matched group improved most in terms of stage-of-exercise and amount of physical activity, followed by the generic group at immediate post-test;meanwhile, the control group had a tendency toward downward change. The effect did not persist, however, for the first two groups. A significantly higher level of exercise self-efficacy was found in the stage-matched group than in the other two groups immediately after the intervention. The results suggested that a website conveying theory-based messages can serve as a useful tool for improving young females' physical activity and exercise self-efficacy. Additionally, we need research that edxplores different degrees and dimensions of tailoring in order to find the optimal degree of audience segmentation.

This study was aimed to identify compounds in bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) ethyl acetate extract (eAe), which inhibit lipopolysaccharide-induced prostaglandin e₂ (PGe₂) production in RAW264.7 cells. Bitter gourd eAe was partitioned between n-hexane and methanol/H₂O (90/10). The hexane fraction was further separated by repeated silica gel chromatographies, and a reverse phase (RP) C18 chromatography. Fraction RP-10 showed the highest inhibition effect on PGe₂ production (Max inhibition = 96%, IC₅₀ = 2.3 μg/ml) and was identified to be triglycerides constituted of short and medium chain fatty acids by ¹H NMR, IR and H-HCOSY, and dicarboxylic acids by GC/MS. Fatty acids with 3-20 carbons were tested for the inhibitory activity, and capric acid exhibited the highest effect (Max inhibition = 99%, IC₅₀ = 6.5 μM). In conclusion, triglycerides composed of short and medium chain fatty acids and dicarboxylic acids in bitter gourd inhibit PGe₂ production, and capric acid is the most potent inhibitor among the fatty acids. © 2009 elsevier Ltd.
