Unsupervised knowledge navigation: Reconstructing the hypermedia structure of instructional materials on world wide web

There are many different terms when learner surf on web. When learner is reading an instructional material, he/she may not understand the meaning of specific term/keyword in a moment easily. At this time, the learner will need to find out the definitions or references about the keyword. However, unfortunately, the learner will not be able to find out what he/ she is looking for in the most of time. It is because of the instruction designers of the learning materials who had never thought that would be a problem for learners. Therefore, it will be excellent, if the associated documents with the keyword which is the learner looking for could be retrieved automatically, and furthermore, the original document structure could be reconstructed to a more suitable for learning and reading in real-time. In this paper, the graph theorem and the data mining technique are applying to produce an association lattice of keywords and design a searching algorithm of reconstructing the necessary instructional materials on the website automatically.

One-on-one educational computing refers to I student I computing device, which means every student in a group uses a digital learning device. In this paper, we present a model of student question generation called AGQ, which stands for "asking a good question," supported by one-on-one educational computing in the classroom settings. AGQ is designed for engaging students in a challenging learning activity that potentially involves higher-level cognitive processing operations. We shall describe the general design of AGQ, called Product evolution, and that the current version is a variation of it.

Nowadays, Problem-Based learning (PBL for short) is a popular teaching strategy for teachers. In the PBL environment students can learn how to solve the real life problems by discussing with their teammates and developing their brainstorm map. How a teacher decides what kinds of teaching materials are appropriate to students according to their learning performance is an important issue. Therefore, this paper proposes a sequencing mechanism to provide the teacher recommendatory sequence of remedial teaching for each group. In this paper the Rough Set theory is used to discover the hidden data pattern in the tree-like concept map which is transformed from the brainstorm map constructed by the students. © 2005 Ieee.

Active learning enables learners to actively engage in learning. learning not only transfers material to students for learning, but also encourages greater mental engagement and more extensive student-student and student-instructor interaction than does a typical lecture class. Peer Instruction (PI) engages students in active learning by achieving continuous instructor-student interaction in a physics lecture. However, the methodologies and the effectiveness of implementing PI for elementary school students have seldom been clarified. This study explores the possibility of adopting PI in an elementary science classroom. The research considerations of the study are as follows: (1) how wireless technology can enhance PI in elementary science classroom;(2) how a teacher can engage students in pre-class reading, and (3) whether elementary school students have sufficient social skills to perform a PI discussion? These questions are examined by observing how the PI pedagogical model worked with a wireless response system in elementary science classroom. Based on the observation, this study also proposes a way of improving the PI learning experience of elementary school students by adding experiments and observations during peer discussion to explain concepts and phenomena in physics. © 2005 Ieee.

This paper describes and discusses the design rationales of a system called My-Pet-Our-Pet that intends to realize an approach to using simulated animal companions to encourage students to help each other learn. A class of students is divided into several teams. every student keeps her own individual animal companion, called My-Pet. An important component of animal companion is the student model of its master that supports self-reflection in different perspectives. Also, every team has a team animal companion, called Our-Pet, being kept by all the members of the team collaboratively. Our-Pet has a collective student model composed by all the student models of the team members. The design of Our-Pet help set a team goal through participating a competition game among Our-Pets of different teams, support collective reflections among team members, and shed light for the team how to help each other. We are currently conducting an experimental trail of the system in an elementary school where every student in the class has a Tablet PC.

We review the evidence from a number of surveys in which our NetLab has been involved about the extent to which the Internet is transforming or enhancing community. The studies show that the Internet is used for connectivity locally as well as globally, although the nature of its use varies in different countries. Internet use is adding on to other forms of communication, rather than replacing them. Internet use is reinforcing the pre-existing turn to societies in the developed world that are organized around networked individualism rather than group or local solidarities. The result has important implications for civic involvement.

This paper presents a new nude image detection method. The foreground-background co-sampling mechanism is proposed to online sample the target image's chromatic distribution. The sampled data is then fed into a multiplayer perceptrons neural network to decide if the target image contains skin color object and which color category it belongs to. The texture feature, coarseness, is also utilized to acquire accurate skin segmentation. Several low-level whereas reliable geometrical constraints are further employed to inspect the skin regions. Finally, the mug shot exclusion procedure is applied to promote the system performance. The experimental results show our method is satisfactory for nude image detection.

The High energy Transient explorer (HeTe‐2) has been in orbit for nearly three years. After a slow startup, the operation of the spacecraft and its instrumentation is now stable and efficient. GRBs are being localized at a rate of ∼25 per year, and the Soft X‐ray Camera (SXC) is determining burst positions with arcminute precision on a regular basis. As described elsewhere in this conference, HeTe‐2 has essentially solved the mystery of the “dark bursts” and helped confirm the connection between long GRBs and type Ic supernovae. Because of its excellent low‐energy response, HeTe has proven to be a capable detector of X‐ray rich GRBs and X‐ray flashes. In this paper, we give an update on the spacecraft and instruments and describe some of the more significant developments of the last 6‐12 months. We also highlight issues which, although described in part on the HeTe web page (http: //***/HeTe), may not be clear to many observers.
