Different instructional strategies have been drawn to assist elementary school students in improving computational thinking (CT) skills and student engagement (Se) in unplugged programming activities. This paper aimed to explore how the interactive strategies of unplugged programming affect CT skills and Se. The study was conducted based on a quasi-experimental research method. The sample was composed of 104 sixth-grade students from northern China. The students in the experimental group learned with interactive unplugged programming, whereas those in the control group learned with non-interactive unplugged programming. Analysis of Covariance statistics and Partial Least Squares Structural equation Modeling were adopted for data analysis. Results showed that the performance of the experimental group in CT skills and Se was considerably better than that of the control group. Moreover, the predictive relationships were more complex between CT skills and Se in the experimental group. In general, these findings confirmed the teaching value of interactive unplugged programming, and further emphasized the important role of students’ CT skills in programming engagement. Therefore, through the application of interaction in instruction design, each student can be assigned a positive role to create a programming classroom that is more conducive to students. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

ABSTRACTResearch Findings:This study incorporates teacher vitality, efficacy, and engagement with lesson design practice in which teachers can particularly encounter challenges from technology integration that calls for design thinking. Using a structural equation modeling approach, this study explores the relationships among teachers’ design thinking engagement (DTe), efficacy in two types of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) called pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK), and design vitality (DV). A survey containing measurements for teachers’ DTe, PCK efficacy, TPCK efficacy, and DV was delivered to 408 Chinese early childhood teachers. Reliability and validity of the instruments were attained through confirmatory factor analysis. Results indicated that teachers’ DTe was statistically significant in explaining teachers’ perceived PCK and TPCK efficacy, as well as perceived DV. Teachers’ perceived TPCK efficacy significantly predicts DV. However, no significant prediction was found for teachers’ perceived PCK efficacy to *** or Policy:To ensure teachers with character strength as designers who face technology integration challenges, it is important for teacher development program to highlight teachers’ proximal processes as designers structured with emotional, cognitive, and behavioral processes that can be manifested through design activities of “empathize”, “Define”, “Ideate”, “Prototype”, and “Test”.

In this quantitative study, we examined the awareness of mobile health (mHealth) applications among taiwan’s university students, particularly the government-operated My Health Bank application. The My Health Bank application allows users to access their personal health information simply through their smartphone’s sensor-assisted facial recognition camera and fingerprint sensor. Whether these university students might help older adults to use this application if they perceive it to be helpful was also explored. Two instruments were used in this study, namely, the Perceptions toward My Health Bank (PMHB) and Geriatric Attitudes Scale (GAS). Two hundred twenty-five (225) university students from the Departments of Senior Citizen Service Management (n = 136) and Nursing (n = 89) at two universities participated in this study. The findings indicated low adoption of My Health Bank and related mHealth applications among students even though they had high adoption rates of smartphones. However, they perceived that the functions of this application are useful and should be promoted to older adults. Thus, building a basic foundation of mHealth and related technology courses is recommended to assist healthcare students in being well-prepared for working with older adults in the digital society. © MYU K.K.

An evaluation of nursing students' learning self-efficacy: A multi-dimensional instrument development and structural validation

Background: Nursing learning self-efficacy (NLSe) is essential in nursing students' learning, and since it is a task-dependent construct, accurate measurements require a multidimensional instrument. Objective: This research aimed to develop and validate a multidimensional NLSe instrument to measure taiwanese nursing students' views of nursing learning self-efficacy. Design: The cross-sectional study design was used for this investigation. Participants: The study included 1143 nursing students from a nursing junior college. Methods: To assess the validity and reliability of the instrument's factors, exploratory factor analysis (eFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were utilized. Conceptual understanding, higher-order cognitive skills, practical work, everyday application, and nursing communication were identified as five factors. A comparison of five proposed models was also conducted. Results: The study found that the correlated and one-factor second-order models were acceptable and provided a simple structure for evaluating nursing students' perceptions of NLSe. Furthermore, a specific model with two second-order scales (Cognition and Application) and one first-order scale (nursing communication) was identified, highlighting the crucial role of nursing communication in nursing students' self-efficacy. Conclusions: evaluating nursing students' learning self-efficacy using a valid and reliable instrument is crucial for understanding their learning confidence. The creation of such a scale constitutes the primary contribution of this study. © 2024 The Authors

Needs analysis-based design principles for constructing a context-aware english learning system

In response to the needs of an international workforce, english for Specific Purpose courses are being promoted in higher education, and instructors are turning to learning technology to help design the instruction. In this paper, a needs analysis was conducted to guide the design of the system, materials and activities for context-aware ubiquitous language learning (CAULL) and english for Fitness Purposes (eFP) in a fitness center as part of a Design-Based Research project. The data collection methods included on-site observations, semi-structured interviews, and a questionnaire. The participants included 82 undergraduate students, seven physical education (Pe) instructors, and six non-Pe faculty members who frequently used the fitness center. All data forms were then triangulated and analyzed. The results show that all three groups consistently agreed that they need receptive language skills as well as specific terminology for fitness. Furthermore, it was suggested that the oral communication skills for eFP learners should also be developed for sharing ideas, experience, and suggestions. They pointed out that vocabulary related to diverse topics such as warm-up and cool-down stretches, cardiovascular exercises, and weight training are needed. Furthermore, participants reported that the CAULL system should be hypermedia-based, and contain a portfolio and a user-friendly interface. The findings were used to develop a blue print for a CAULL system based on design principles. Improving e-learning involves various levels of supports. Accordingly, researchers usually adopt complex research designs with a multilevel structure or repeated measurements to capture a heuristic view of learners’ perceptions, comprehension, and behavior in e-learning settings. A total of 76 studies with Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) as a multilevel modeling technique in 13 major e-learning journals from January 2000 to September 2022, published in the Web of science, were reviewed. We assessed the applications of the following key criteria: reasons for using HLM, data characteristics, sample characteristics, model characteristics, variables used in the research, software use, and main technology used in the research. The results revealed that two-level models and random-intercept models are mostly used in multilevel model building. Moreover, most e-learning studies included two-level random intercept models with "students" as sampling units of analysis in Level 1, and "cognitive learning" (i.e., examination score, learning achievement) as the dependent variable in Level 1. Based on our review results, we provide suggestions and potential applications of using multilevel modeling in e-learning studies. © 2023 The Authors

Two new non-withanolidal steroids with a cross-conjugated dienone structural unit in ring A, capnesterones A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the soft coral Capnella imbricata in the southeast waters of taiwan. The compounds' structures were elucidated through a comprehensive analysis of spectroscopic data, including IR, eSIMS, ¹H NMR, and ¹³C NMR, and through comparison with previous literature. At a concentration of 10 μM, steroids 1 and 2 exhibited reductions in iNOS levels (60 % and 82 %) compared to LPS-stimulated control cells, along with increased release (134 % and 110 %) against COX-2 protein expressions. © 2024 Phytochemical Society of europe

ABSTRACTFacilitating decision making in authentic contexts is an important educational objective of professional training. To enable learners to have more opportunities to practice in authentic contexts under the guidance of instructors, the flipped learning mode of shifting the lectures to be the pre-class activity with the presentation of digital media has gradually been receiving attention. However, the conventional flipped learning mostly uses videos to present teaching content. In such a learning environment with one-way information and lack of experience, it is not easy for most learners to experience the actual situation encountered in the nursing procedure, which affects their judgment and performance when dealing with actual scenarios. To solve this problem, the present study adopted spherical video-based virtual reality (SVVR) to provide an experiential learning mode in flipped learning. To verify the effects of this teaching mode, this study conducted an experiment in a blood transfusion safety training course. The experimental group used the SVVR-based experiential flipped learning (SVVR-eFL) mode, while the control group used the conventional flipped learning mode. The results showed that using the SVVR-eFL mode not only enhanced new nursing staff’s learning achievement, but also increased their decision-making performance, meta-cognition tendency, problem-solving tendency and classroom engagement.

Digital content industry, encompassing areas such as digital games, computer animation, digital audio-visual applications, and digital art, plays a pivotal role in today's and future developmental trends. Maya 3D software stands out as a crucial development tool in these domains. However, the multitude of built-in tools in Maya 3D can lead to overly complex interfaces, impacting development efficiency for software developers. To address this issue, this paper designs a digital toolkit for Maya 3D software, presented in a Menu Bar format. This toolkit offers features like naming, sorting, categorization, and automatic saving to JSON files for future use. Through a crossover experimental design, this paper investigates the impact of this proposed toolkit on 3D software developers' individual work performance, work engagement, and stress perception. Results shows a significant positive influence of that toolkit on software developers, particularly in enhancing work performance. It means that the proposed digital toolkit effectively improves the performance of software developers' work and reduces their stress during the software development process.

The study uses machine learning to determine the accuracy of different algorithms for predicting MetS. early prediction of MetS through routine health screening is an important goal for preventive medicine. The subjects in this study were employees aged 20 to 65 years old who signed a consent form for in-hospital health screening data were collected from 2015 to 2020. Total of 3538 individuals who underwent health screening were included in this study. Baseline characteristics of the 315 participants diagnosed with metabolic syndrome and 3222 participants without metabolic syndrome. This is a machine learning approach to identify metabolic syndrome using biochemical values and lifestyle habits. We found that the F1 score for detection of metabolic syndrome by neural network is the most accurate and higher compared to other models. Our study also identified some new indicators, including heart rhythm, RBC, WBC, Hb, and uric acid, as candidates for better detection of metabolic syndrome. © 2023 Ieee.
