In Bali, the high volume of tourists significantly contributes to marine debris, particularly plastics, which threatens the ecological health of beaches and marine life, impacting both tourism and local livelihoods. Effective management is crucial to preserve Bali's natural beauty and sustainability. This study explores the factors influencing the willingness to participate (WTP) in marine debris management among urban communities in the Bali metropolitan area, Indonesia. Utilizing a binary logistic regression model, we examine the impact of key elements for effective marine debris management, risk awareness, learning performance, and higher monthly income and geographic differences between inland and coastal communities. The findings reveal that effective management practices significantly enhance community participation, highlighting the importance of transparency, accountability, and well-organized efforts. Educational initiatives also play a crucial role, with performance in risk awareness and learning showing a marginally significant positive effect on WTP. Conversely, higher income levels negatively influence participation, suggesting a preference for institutional funding over personal contributions. Geographic differences indicate that coastal communities are more inclined to participate than inland communities. These insights provide valuable guidance for policymakers and practitioners in developing strategies to mobilize volunteers, enhance urban resilience, and promote social well-being. By implementing effective management practices, comprehensive educational programs, tailored engagement strategies, and fostering partnerships, urban communities in Bali can become more resilient and actively address environmental challenges. © 2024 The Authors

Dry-season sources of riverine sediment from the tropical mixed urban-agricultural watershed of the Mun River Basin in northeastern Thailand

Northeastern(NE) Thailand is well recognized as the land for rice cropping and consequently, it is potentially contaminated with chemicals from soil fertilization, pest/weed control, and urban *** Mun River basin in NE Thailand principally is comprised of rice paddies and sedimentation in the river has been pronounced, but the studies on sediment source identification are limited. The current study aims to identify sediment sources in the Mun River basin and discuss possible impacts on ecosystems attributed to exposure to polluted sediment. The assessment relies upon physicochemical properties and heavy metal contents(iron(Fe), manganese(Mn), copper(Cu), chromium(Cr), nickel(Ni),and Zinc(Zn)) in the fine-grained sediment(<63 μm) taken from the Mun River basin and the Chi River in the dry season of 2020-2021. The findings revealed that the heavy metals in the sediment had not accumulated to levels of concern. Most sediment was from natural sources, including Fe-and Mn-rich sediment, Cr-dominant sediment, and Ni-and Cu-rich sediment. Fe-and Zn-rich sediment was, however, found in the urban watershed of Lam Ta Klong, and it could originate from mixed urban sources. Ferich sediment was predominant in the Mun River basin, which and could be a significant sink and source of toxic elements from agricultural and urban discharges. It is suggested that the toxic compounds in the sediment should be consistently monitored, whereas ecological and health risk assessment should be focused on the mobile forms.

Modeling the Vulnerability of Livelihood Systems to Drought along Livelihood Zones in the Northwestern Escarpment of the Ethiopian Rift Valley

Drought is becoming a common problem for farmers in the Northwestern Escarpment Ethiopian Rift Valley’s three studied livelihood zones (LZs). Droughts wreaked havoc on the community’s livelihood systems regularly. It lefts the community food insure and repeatedly disturbs their ecosystems. As a result, the current study used meteorological, spatial, and socioeconomic data from the area to assess the community’s drought vulnerability. Each variable of drought vulnerability was normalized as proxy indicators to calculate exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity indexes. From the results, the Raya valley livelihood zone (RVLZ) is relatively more drought vulnerable (0.65) than the Tsirare catchment livelihood zone (TCLZ) (0.63) and Alagie-Ofla livelihood zones (ALOFLZ) (0.60). The RVLZ has a less adaptive capacity than ALOFLZ but more susceptibility and higher exposures to drought risks than the two LZs. Besides, the TCLZ has less adaptive capacity than the two livelihood zones, with more vulnerability and exposure to drought risks than ALOFLZ. The highest levels of exposition and susceptibility synergy with low resilience have aggravated the vulnerability to drought in all study LZs. Livelihood zone-based interventions and climate-smart farming are thus necessary for all LZs to reduce possible drought risks and transfer vulnerable communities into high adaptive capacities. © 2022 Applied Geography Conferences.

The current study looked at the patterns and causes of land use and land cover (LULC) dynamics from 1985 to 2019 in three drought-prone areas of the Ethiopian Rift Valley’s Northwestern Escarpment. Spatial data, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews were used to study the trends and causes of LULC dynamics. For Landsat image processing, ERDAS Imagine 2015 was used, and for LULC change analysis, ArcGIS 10.8 was employed. From the result, fast LULC exchange occurred in all study LZs throughout the study years. Raya Valley LZ (RVLZ) is, however, more highly shifted than Allagie Ofla LZ (ALOFLZ) and Tsirare catchment LZ (TCLZ). From the total area, only 17.7, 28.3, and 23.2 percent of RVLZ, ALOFLZ, and TCLZ persisted over the study years, respectively. The LULC change in the studied LZs was driven by population pressure and recurrent droughts. The research area’s local ecosystem services have been disrupted by these changes, which have impacted the livelihood system of the local community. Consequently, the government should reform the appropriate land use policy, which benefits local farmers and their ecosystems. In addition, farm activities must be environmentally friendly to increase farmland productivity. © 2022 Applied Geography Conferences.

This study investigates visitor preferences and willingness to pay (WTP) for circular economy attributes in Bali’s tourism sector, segmenting tourists into three groups: 3R champions, circular supporters, and traditionalists. It focuses on four core circular economy design principles: design for longevity, design for service, design for reuse in manufacturing, and design for material recovery. The results reveal strong visitor preferences for sustainable tourism practices that reduce waste, support local artisans, and lower carbon emissions. To operationalize these principles, four hypothetical tourism scenarios were developed: (1) local transitioning support, highlighting the use of locally sourced materials and recycled crafts;(2) eco-friendly adoptive package, prioritizing carbon footprint reduction through integrated services and advanced recycling systems;(3) renewable-by-design experience, featuring accommodations with reused art and recyclable materials;and (4) circular tourism development, which integrates all circular economy attributes. The problem of flooding in Central Vietnam in general and the lower Ba River in particular is one of the natural disasters that frequently threatens people's lives and socioeconomic development in the ***,climate change is becoming ever more prominent and hotter,making extreme natural disasters more unusual and *** this research,MIKE-FLOOD—a model that connects a 1-dimensional(1-D)MIKE 11 Hydrodynamics(HD)model with a 2-dimensional(2-D)MIKE 21 HD model—was used to set *** model was calculated for three floods:(1)flood in October 1993,(2)flood in November 2003,and(3)flood in November 2007;these are floods with high frequency and relatively large *** results show that the 1993 flood rose and receded *** flood peak inundated an area of 22,600 ha,accounting for 52%of the natural *** flooded areas deeper than 1,2,3,4,and 5m were 16500,11,000,7000,4200,and 2200 ha,*** the center of Tuy Hoa city,the flooded area at the time of maximum water level was almost 100%.

The present study determines the environmental quality and carrying capacity for the restoration of the degraded mangroves in Southeast Sulawesi. The physico-chemical conditions of estuarine water and its sediment nutrient contents were determined in both protected and unprotected areas, with no significant difference (p > 0.05) except for nitrogen and inorganic carbon contents of water. The current study found promising environments for the restoration of degraded mangroves in unprotected areas in Southeast Sulawesi. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

As population size grows over time, staple food production also needs to keep up with increased annual demands. In Indonesia, the agricultural sector applies intensification and extensification to maximize rice productivity. However, farm extensification can instead decline productivity, should it sprawl into marginal lands like the study area that has been affected by sea-level rise impact, i.e., surface saltwater intrusion. Therefore, this study set out to differentiate paddies into segments affected and unaffected by salinity based on discernible variation in rice growth stages. These stages were determined using a vegetation index, NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), calculated from time-series Sentinel-2 L2A+B image data from 2015 until 2020. The resulting temporal NDVI showed two cropping patterns year-round but with different planting times. In salinity-unaffected paddy segments, farmers began the inundation-transplanting stage in late March and ended the cropping season with fallow in August. Meanwhile, in salinity-affected segments, the cropping stages were the opposite: inundation in early April and fallow in early September. The measurable impact of salinity was apparent at the vegetative-generative stage, where salinity-affected paddies had the highest NDVI of 0.64-0.65, whereas those unaffected had the highest NDVI of 0.7-0.75. These index values indicate an impaired rice growth rate due to salinity effects. Compared with the field-measured data, the NDVI showed 85% accuracy, with a Kappa coefficient of 0.87. Meanwhile, the NDVI-EC correlation test produced R-values of 63-85%. Overall, this research has confirmed that remote sensing image and technology can acquire variable data that explain salinity effects on coastal paddies. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Climate change has significantly impacted smallholder farmers in developing countries, where most livelihoods rely on rain-fed agricultural systems. The Northwestern Escarpment of the Ethiopian Rift Valley (NEERV) is among Ethiopia's most drought-vulnerable areas and is highly affected by land use and land cover change (LULCC). This study aimed to analyze the synergistic impacts of drought and LULCC in the three major livelihood zones (LZs) of NEERV between 1983 and 2019. The study used socioeconomic, climatic, and earth observation datasets. Utilizing a mix of socioeconomic, climatic, and earth observation datasets, this paper investigated the combined effects of these factors on three major livelihood zones: Alagie-Ofla (ALOFLZ), Tsirare catchment (TCLZ), and Raya Valley (RVLZ). The analysis revealed significant rainfall variability, with annual fluctuations between 31 and 50% and seasonal variations ranging from 39 to 99%. This variability has contributed to frequent drought occurrences, with intervals of approximately 2.13 years in ALOFLZ, 2.2 years in TCLZ, and 2.13 years in RVLZ. There has been a notable increase in cultivated and built-up areas across all zones. The study found that drought and LULCC have severely impacted agricultural productivity and local ecosystems, with the most pronounced effects observed in RVLZ, TCLZ, and ALOFLZ. The findings highlight a critical need for integrated approaches to manage and monitor the synergistic impacts of drought and LULCC. The study underscores the importance of enhancing drought and LULCC monitoring systems to improve resilience and adaptability in vulnerable regions. The research contributes to a deeper understanding of how these intertwined factors exacerbate environmental and socioeconomic challenges, offering valuable insights into policy and management strategies for mitigating their effects. Rapid urbanization and tourism growth are straining sanitation systems, water resources, and public health in many developing regions. Labuan Bajo, Indonesia, a super-priority tourism destination, faces water shortages and inadequate sanitation infrastructure, increasing environmental and health risks. This study examines community-based sanitation adaptation strategies using an adaptive capacity framework and a choice experiment (CE) method to assess community willingness to participate in sanitation improvements. Three scenarios were tested: (1) community skill improvement, promoting composting septic tank waste and community involvement in sanitation planning; (2) health education platform, integrating septic tank sludge removal services with public health education; and (3) adaptive climate community-based sanitation, a comprehensive approach combining waste management, education, and community engagement to enhance sanitation resilience. Results show that education, government support, and community participation drive successful sanitation adaptation. Among the three scenarios, education-focused and comprehensive approaches had the highest Marginal Willingness to Participate (MWTP) values, reflecting strong community interest in health-focused sanitation solutions. Government policies and financial support were crucial for long-term success. This research provides practical insights for policymakers, urban planners, and development agencies working on climate-resilient sanitation solutions in tourism-driven and water-scarce regions. Future studies should explore how these strategies can be adapted in different settings.
