Self-Supervised Underwater Intelligent Perception for Deep-Sea Cage Aquaculture

In deep-sea net-pen aquaculture, underwater intelligent sensing is performed by an underwater camera for information acquisition, but underwater scattering and absorption effects affect the acquisition of underwater information. It is challenging to use neural networks to process the net tank aquaculture scenarios because the underwater data sets of the net tank aquaculture scenarios are not accessible. In this article, we propose a self-supervised deep-sea scene recovery method utilizing a homology constraint and a fusion strategy. Specifically, the scene radiation maps are derived based on a neural network and a prior extraction architecture, respectively, and two scene radiation maps originate from two different computational regimes. Finally, the perceptual fusion strategy is used to blend two scene radiation maps to obtain better performing results and minimize the error using the homology constraint. Extensive experiments confirm that the approach using perceptual fusion has excellent recovery capabilities. It is demonstrated through extensive experiments that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of both visual quality and quantitative metrics.

Flexural-gravity wave interaction with undulating bottom topography in the presence of uniform current: An asymptotic approach

Using an asymptotic method, this article deals with flexural-gravity wave scattering with undulating bottom topography, including the effect of uniform currents. The interest in this problem lies in developing second-order solutions using the Fourier transform, which minimises the error gap between first and second-order solutions. The present method allows the physical processes involved in the sea-bed topography, uniform current, plate-covered surface, and wave interaction to be studied. Specifically, we observe Bragg resonance between the flexural-gravity waves and the bottom ripples, which are associated with the reflection of incident wave energy. We examine the effects of wave current and emphasise how crucial the asymptotic expansion method is to the emergence of the current response. We demonstrate that bottom topography dominates the effects of Bragg resonance for depth Froude numbers valued at 0.8 or less. Further, most reflected wave components have their frequencies shifted by the current, and wave action conservation causes reflected wave energy to be enhanced for following currents. Using the Joint North Sea Wave Observation Project spectrum and the discrete Fourier transform, the theory derived in the frequency domain is shown in the time domain to analyse wave propagation through the whole system. © 2024

Scattering of gravity waves by a pontoon type breakwater with a series of pervious and impervious skirt walls

The scattering of surface gravity waves by a skirt wall breakwater is analysed in two dimensions under the assumption of small-amplitude wave theory. The oscillatory wave past the porous skirt walls is assumed to follow Darcy's law. The boundary value problem is solved using multi-domain boundary element method to obtain the numerical results for the different number of porous skirt walls, relative pontoon width, relative submergence and different porosity of the skirt walls. The study reveals that an increase in the number of skirt walls from one to four can reduce the wave transmission by 61% but at the expense of an increase in horizontal wave force by 90% and decrease in the vertical force by 31%. A minimum of two-skirt walls is needed for reducing wave transmission. Skirt wall porosity of 0.40 is recommended for field applications considering the trade-off between the wave transmission and wave forces.

In this study, we present a proof-of-concept neuroelectronic interface (NEI) for extracellular stimulation and recording of neurophysiological activity in spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) cultured in vitro on three-dimensional, micro-patterned substrates with customized microtopographies, integrated within a 196-channel microelectrode array (MEA). This approach enables mechanotaxis-driven neuronal contact guidance, promoting SGN growth and development, which is highly sensitive to artificial in vitro environments. The microtopography geometry was optimized based on our previous studies to enhance SGN alignment and neuron-electrode interactions. The NEI was validated using SGNs dissociated from rat pups in the prehearing period and cultured for seven days in vitro (DIV). We observed viable and proliferative cellular cultures with robust neurophysiological responses in the form of local field potentials (LFPs) resembling action potentials (APs), elicited both spontaneously and through electrical stimulation. These findings provide deeper insights into SGN behavior and neuron-microenvironment interactions, laying the groundwork for further advancements in neuroelectronic systems.

A two-stage stochastic model for workforce capacity requirement in shipbuilding

Studies have been being carried out to make production faster and more organised in the shipbuilding industry, as in other industry. The fact that automation-based works are limited in the shipbuilding industry is one of the biggest challenges encountered in block production as in other stages of shipbuilding. The blocks are time-consuming and difficult components to produce in the shipbuilding process. They are the structures formed by joining the cut metal sheets, profiles and other components. These activities are carried out at the different stations of shipyards. Labour planning is one of the crucial issues in shipbuilding. In this study, the allocation of the required capacity during the pre-production stations of the block production, namely C and D, is examined stochastically. The amount of work, revisions and worker performance under uncertainty factors to be experienced in the production process are included in the problem. A two-stage stochastic mathematical recourse model was established to determine the amount of workforce capacity requirement (man*day) of the planning period at the pre-production station depending on the factors. Scenarios are determined randomly and the near-optimum solution was tried to be obtained by the Sample Average Approximation (SAA) approach.

Functional materials for powering and implementing next-generation miniature sensors

The advent of the Internet of Things and smart applications such as smart cities, smart health care, and smart electronics will require the use of a vast array of sensors. Sensors are a key part of the revolution in interconnected devices. The growing need for sensing, monitoring, and collecting data at scales from small to large will help, for example, prevent future pandemics, elucidate climate change, optimize industrial processes, and train machine learning models. Recent progress in materials science, micro/nano technologies, and integrated circuits has made it possible to reduce the size and cost of sensors while integrating them into more complex machines, ranging from wearable/implantable devices to onboard laboratories for planetary exploration rovers. However, the small dimensions of miniature sensors present some challenges, including power supply, active sensing materials, and material flexibility. In this article, we review microbatteries to power miniature sensors. We discuss materials and architectures for microbatteries and their fabrication methods. We also discuss energy harvesting materials for self-powered miniature sensors. We review in detail advanced materials for active sensing, including organic, inorganic, and composite materials with emphasis on wearable/ implantable sensors targeted at humans and animals. In addition, flexible electronics as well as substrates and encapsulation materials and their integration are reviewed. Finally, future perspectives and challenges of these functional materials for next-generation miniature sensors are highlighted.

Cost and risk optimization is a central issue in the offshore Oil and Gas sector, and risk-based approaches has been more and more employed to assist the segment in the concretization of that goal. In this sense, the use of Risk Based Inspection by the oil industry has increased. The inspection procedure aims mitigating the uncertainty related to the asset degradation state, enabling a better quantification of the actual damage, and, consequently, increasing the accuracy of remaining life projections. However, the costs involved in offshore subsea inspections are considerable. Therefore, the optimization of inspection plans plays a crucial role in the definition of an asset management program economically balanced. To perform an efficient optimization, it is important not only obtain an effective optimization algorithm but also achieve a high quality of the information used as input. In other words, an adequate definition of the risk indexes used is necessary, as well as the entire process used to quantify them. In this context, this paper presents a framework for obtaining the optimized inspection plans, starting from the assessment of the risk associated with the failure modes, moving on through the process of defining risk indices and, finally, presenting the optimization process itself. In this way, the framework proposed presents all the phases necessary to obtain optimized inspection plans, including the stage of preparation for the optimization process. Finally, the application of the proposed framework is illustrated by the elaboration of the inspection plans for a subsea manifold. Copyright © 2023 by ASME.

Free-running CFD simulations to assess a ship-manoeuvring control method with motion forecast in waves

In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based free running simulations of a tanker model were performed to assess a ship-manoeuvring control method with motion forecasting in waves. A modified Time -Varying Auto-Regressive (TVAR) model was developed as a forecast model for predicting the changes in the heading angle. Furthermore, Functional Mock-up Unit (FMU) was developed and embedded in the CFD model to perform the steering operation based on the predicted heading angle. The results confirmed that the motion -forecasting control method improves the course keeping and course changing performance, showing faster heading change, decreased heading overshoot and reduced rudder manipulation.

Several researchers have attempted to find a suitable spectrum model for Indonesian waters, but these references do not provide a common understanding of defining a spectrum model. This prompted the researcher to reassess the applicability of the wave spectrum model in Indonesia based on more appropriate data sources and systematic work procedures. This research is based on time series wave profile measurement data, which are then transformed into power spectral density curves (referred to as spectrum curves). From a number of obtained spectrum curves, this study aims to recommend key parameter values that indicate the shape of the spectrum in the western Java Sea so that it can be applied to the needs of marine building design. The procedures carried out in this study include: adjustment of the values of the key parameters of the JONSWAP spectrum (alpha and gamma);matching against a number of spectrum models;evaluation of the distribution functions to define the values of alpha and gamma;as well sensitivity test. The results of this study recommend alpha 0.99 = 0.00943 and gamma 0.99 = 2.11 for application in marine building design, as well alpha 0.5 = 0.00163 and gamma 0.5 = 1.07 for application in operational studies.

Brands use logos to reflect their identities and convey their company character to target customers. Logos not only represent brand value but also provide various information about brands. Companies aiming to emphasize sustainable brand value also seek to showcase this aspect in their logos. Therefore, sustainable brand design and development are preferred. The focus of this research is on sustainable brand development through Artificial Intelligence-supported logo design and developing a decision support system for selecting the best logo among Artificial Intelligence-generated logos. In this study, Artificial Intelligence-supported logo design is explained, and the Multi Attribute Group Decision Making approach is adopted for identifying the best logo among the obtained logos. The Picture Fuzzy - Weights by Envelope and Slope - Alternative Ranking using Two-Step Logarithmic Normalization hybrid method is proposed for logo decision-making, combining the Weights by Envelope and Slope criterion weighting method using picture fuzzy sets with Alternative Ranking using Two-Step Logarithmic Normalization alternative ranking methods. Additionally, the Picture Fuzzy Yager Weighted Average aggregation operator based on Yager t-norm and t-conorm operations is employed. The steps of the hybrid method are outlined, and its algorithm is formulated. To test the applicability and robustness of the algorithm, sustainable logo design for an architectural firm is developed and executed as a real-case study. The research concludes that Artificial Intelligence-supported sustainable logo design can be achieved, and the hybrid method can support determining the best logo based on expert opinions. Based on the research findings, the hybrid method is recommended for sustainable logo design and selection.
