The main aim of this project is to develop a sustainable, safe & environmentally sound ship recycling industry in Indonesia. As the world's largest archipelago state, it is essential for Indonesia to maintain a large fleet of ships to ensure sufficient sea transportation. However, after completing their operational life, all these ships are required to be dismantled. Currently, there is no proper understanding & infrastructure for 'Ship Recycling' in Indonesia yet. This lack of understanding causes serious contamination of the sea which results in harming the environment. Furthermore, the working conditions are extremely poor because the yards are not fit for purpose and workers are exposed to many hazards. Referring to International Maritime Organization’s Hong Kong Convention a project is carried out to preparing the process of establishing green and sustainable ship recycling industry in Indonesia by conducting gap analyses and proposing environmentally friendly ship recycling yard concept. © 2019: The Royal Institution of naval Architects.

The study is aimed to assess the navigation safety in the port surrounding the area as part of the Indonesian Government°s efforts to increase the port performance and minimize the cost of maritime logistics. The port navigation system and infrastructure such as vessels traffic management system, navigation lanes, port basin, quay, etc. play an important role in determining the productivity and efficiency of the port, especially in the busy port such as Tanjung Priok, Indonesia. Any accident would interrupt port activities and creates unnecessary costs. Formal Safety Assessment method, as introduced by the International Maritime Organization was implemented in the study. The assessment was carried out using qualitative and quantitative risks analyses, based on the available data and information gathered from various sources. It was identified that accidents occurred in the port waterfront were mainly due to the ships, environment, human factors, and management. Results of the assessment were then used as the basis for proposing an improvement strategy. © 2019 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

This paper aims at presenting a meshless Generalized Finite Difference Method (GFDM) for solving the Helmholtz equation. In particular, in order to tackle the problem where a fluid domain is divided into different parts by a thin-wall structure, a Domain-Decomposition Method (DDM) is introduced to prevent interactions between node pairs coming from different parts of the flow domain. Two rigorous benchmarks are performed to validate the convergence and accuracy of the present GFDM-DDM model. Furthermore, caisson resonance problems are also investigated and discussed based on the novel numerical tool. It is shown that the present GFDM-DDM model can provide satisfactory predictions for resonance modes in caisson resonance problems, and hence can be treated as a powerful numerical tool in ocean engineering design due to its accurate and efficient characteristics. © 2023 The Authors

Recent studies have shown the potential of zinc oxide as an additive in diesel engines because of its favorable properties. Goethite, as a metal additive, exhibits good thermodynamic stability and acts as a catalyst carrier to reduce environmental pollution. Incorporating zinc oxide microparticles and goethite nanoparticles into pure palm oil (PPaO) has great potential to improve the fuel properties. Therefore, in this study, the effects of adding zinc oxide microparticles and goethite nanoparticles into PPaO on the engine performance, spray characteristics, and smoke opacity of a diesel engine were investigated. A high-speed camera was used for the spray experiments. The results showed that the use of PPaO significantly increased the smoke opacity by similar to 127.89 % compared with diesel fuel (DF). However, the use of PPaO with zinc oxide microparticles (PPaOZnO) and PPaO with goethite nanoparticles (PPaOGOE) significantly reduced the smoke opacity. The reduction in smoke opacity was most pronounced for the PPaOGOE fuel blend, with a value of 60 %, relative to the smoke opacity for DF. The PPaOZnO fuel blend significantly increased the specific fuel consumption by 37.1 %, with an average increase of similar to 24.21 %, compared with DF at an engine load of 40 %. Moreover, the use of PPaOZnO and PPaOGOE fuel blends improved spray penetration 2 times compared to PPaO, although the relative viscosity and spray angle were similar to those for PPaO. These findings suggest that zinc oxide and goethite have great potential as additives for PPaO fuel, thereby enhancing the efficiency and performance of diesel engines.

The LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) fueled ship is one of the solution to solve the emission of SOx and NOx in conventional maritime fuel. Despite the advantages, the LNG fuel is more dangerous due to their low flash point. The leakage of gas fuel is one of the threat of LNG-fueled vessel, due to its explosive characteristic. This study aims to establish the exclusion zone due to LNG dispersion. The analysis contained the potential leakage and gas dispersion along to the exposed area. A verified Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis based on the time accuracy assumption using KFX software was performed to simulate the dynamic behavior of the vapor dispersion. The scenarios were categorized by the leak size, leak location, and mass flow rate. The required environment parameters, e.g., wind speed and wind directions were also considered. It is found that the behavior of dispersed vapor was strongly depending on the leak location and mass flow rate. Surprisingly, the environment parameter has slightly affected the distance of the vapor dispersion. According to these findings, to deliver risk mitigation in a gas leakage accident, the exclusion zone was provided. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Creating tissue and organ equivalents with intricate architectures and multiscale functional feature sizes is the first step toward the reconstruction of transplantable human tissues and organs. Existing embedded ink writing approaches are limited by achievable feature sizes ranging from hundreds of microns to tens of millimeters, which hinders their ability to accurately duplicate structures found in various human tissues and organs. In this study, a multiscale embedded printing (MSEP) strategy is developed, in which a stimuli- responsive yield - stress fluid is applied to facilitate the printing process. A dynamic layer height control method is developed to print the cornea with a smooth surface on the order of microns, which can effectively overcome the layered morphology in conventional extrusion - based three- dimensional bioprinting methods. Since the support bath is sensitive to temperature change, it can be easily removed after printing by tuning the ambient temperature, which facilitates the fabrication of human eyeballs with optic nerves and aortic heart valves with overhanging leaflets on the order of a few millimeters. The thermosensitivity of the support bath also enables the reconstruction of the full - scale human heart on the order of tens of centimeters by on - demand adding support bath materials during printing. The proposed MSEP demonstrates broader printable functional feature sizes ranging from microns to centimeters, providing a viable and reliable technical solution for tissue and organ printing in the future.

The offshore support vessel (OSV) industry is essential to the successful exploration and production of oil and gas at sea. Understanding the factors that dictate this industry’s success is crucial and can indicate the actions that must be taken by industry players to survive in this market. Despite the Brazilian OSV industry being part of an extensive supply network, decision-makers operating in this industry still do not know what the critical success factors (CSFs) are, which has implications for the flexibility of companies in this industry. In this context, this paper is devoted to the identification of the CSFs of the OSV industry in Brazil, a country that obtains 95% of its oil production from the sea and that has faced economic and political turbulence in recent years. In this study, nine macro CSFs and 25 micro CSFs were identified through a mixed-methodology approach. This study provides insights both for scholars and practitioners involved in not only the OSV industry but the entire oil and gas supply chain. © 2020, Global Institute of Flexible Systems Management.

Various types of data are produced by the shipbuilding and offshore industry. As the number of ships and offshore structures that were built over time increased, an enormous amount of data, called big data, had to be handled. However, it is difficult to handle effectively such big data with the existing methodology for data storage and processing. Therefore, big data technology needs to be applied to the systems of shipyards, such as the product lifecycle management system. On the other hand, the construction of an offshore structure requires a lot of piping, and there are many materials as much as piping. For a shipyard that executes multiple projects at once, it is not easy to correlate so much piping material. A piping designer should check all materials based on his or her understanding of the design characteristics. However, depending on the maturity of the designer, it can be difficult to handle such large data manually;as a result, there can be errors in piping design. In this study, a big data framework applicable to the shipyard is proposed and used for the analysis. That is, the association analysis of piping materials of an offshore structure is performed based on the big data framework that can process a large amount of data to assist piping designers. As an application, after analyzing the material data for one offshore structure, the applicability of this study was evaluated through the results. We believe this study can help piping designers.

East Asian CO2 level change caused by Pacific Decadal Oscillation

Accurate projection of CO2 concentration in time and space remains challenging because of complex interplay between anthropogenic emissions, biospheric responses, and climatic variabilities. While the increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration is due primarily to fossil fuel burning, natural climate variabilities are known to introduce intermittent changes in the global CO2 growth rates. Thus, understanding the correlation of climate and carbon cycling systems is important in assessing the anthropogenic and natural impacts. Here, we report decadal CO2 variabilities in western Pacific based on data from several ground-based stations in the region and Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS). In addition to the well-established El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), there exists a decadal changing CO2 trend in the datasets mentioned above. Analysis of ground-based CO2 measurements in northern Taiwan shows a decadal signal at amplitudes of -5 ppm. In contrast, AIRS shows a similar trend but at a reduced amplitude of -1 ppm. We attribute the decadal signal to dynamical factors related to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). This decadal signal, however, is not reproduced by the state-of-the-art data assimilation system, CarbonTacker, suggesting a gap in our knowledge of the modulation of carbon cycling systems and climate.

The difficulty in controlling the proper bonding during manufacturing sandwich for ship structure is a major problem. One of the damage types that often occurs is debonding caused by the lack of the adhesive layer bond between the two faceplate materials and the sandwich core at the centre. Furthermore, the identification of damage in ship structure becomes essential to ensure the structural integrity and security issues. Based on the issues above, damage identification on the sandwich plate of Ferry Ro-Ro with several debonding ratios using the k-NN algorithm was proposed. The cross-validation method was used to check the validity of the proposed algorithm model in practice. The proposed models were analyzed with various k-fold values, k-NN values, and number of iterations to investigate the influence of the those parameters on the accuracy of the model. From the result, it can be found that increasing k-fold value is the best strategy to increase the accuracy of the model. However, increase number of neighbors (k) caused a bias so that the accuracy decreased. The tests resulted in the highest accuracy of 97.60% obtained at k-fold 11 with k=3 and 90 iterations. It can be summarized that the large number of k-folds and small k-NN parameters do not require large iterations to obtain high prediction results.
