作者: MATHIEU, CHARLES E. USCG The author graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in New London Connecticut class of 1953. After three years on ocean weather patrols and one year on LORAN station Wake Island he entered the three year graduate program in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology specializing in the nuclear branch. He completed his studies in June 1960.

USN (RET) served as an enlisted man aboard USS SPROSTON (DD 577) and other Destroyer Forces Atlantic Fleet ships prior to his entrance into the U.S. Naval Academy in 1944. After graduating in 1948 he served on PHIBPAC ships until 1951 when he entered Webb Institute of Naval Architecture. He graduated from Webb with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Engineering and a Master of Science Degree in Naval Architecture in 1953. He has served as Planning and Design Officer for the Supervisor of Shipbuilding in Jacksonville Florida was Assistant Material Officer on the Staff Commander Mine Forces U.S. Pacific Fleet and as Docking Officer and Ship Superintendent Long Beach Naval Shipyard. He then served in the Engineering Department of the USS RANDOLPH (CVS 15) after which he reported to the Bureau of Ships where he worked as Aircraft Carrier Project Officer in the Contract Design Division. He was Industrial Officer at the David Taylor Model Basin prior to assuming duties as Fleet Maintenance Officer Staff Commander in Chief U.S. Naval Forces Europe. Prior to retiring on 1 January 1969 he served as Repair Officer U.S. Naval Support Activity Saigon. Since retirement he has been Manager of System Engineering and Senior Member of the Technical Staff for the LHA Program at Litton's Advanced Marine Technology Group and is currently Manager Engineering Design with HARCO Engineering the design division of Harbor Boat Building Company Terminal Island California.

He has been associated with the design offices of John G. Alden and Hickman Sea-Sled Co. both of Boston Mass. and is presently employed as a Naval Architect in the Hydromechanics Laboratory of the David W. Taylor Model Basin USN where he is associated with the Hydrofoil Research Program.

His education is comprised of a B.S. degree from the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture an L.L.B. degree from the George Washington University Law School completion of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University and current study of Transportation at the American University. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the District of Columbia and a Member of the Bar in the District of Columbia and the State of Maryland. In addition to ASNE his other professional memberships include the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers the Society of Aeronautical Weight Engineers and the Association of Senior Engineers of the Naval Ships Systems Command (Honorary). USN Commander L. Dennis Ballou: USN is the Head of the Engineering Service Office Naval Ship Engineering Center. He is involved in computer hardware and software services to support engineering design automatic data processing systems design work study and quality assurance. Prior to NavSec duty Commander Ballou served in various billets afloat and ashore: tours on the USS Skagit and Tang supervision of the USS Skipjack's first overhul construction of the USS Nathanael Greene and helping to establish the Polaris overhaul program. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy Officers' Submarine School and the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Webb Institute of Naval Architecture a Bachelor of Law Degree from the George Washington University Law School and has completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University Business School. He has been engaged in ship design for the Navy since 1948. CDR. L. D. Ballou USN is Head of the Engineering Criteria and Procedures Office of the Naval. Ship Engineering Center. One of his responsibilities includes management of the Navy's Computer-Aided Ship Design program. Prior assignments have included: ship superintendent and docking officer at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard senior submarine project officer and planning and estimating officer at the Office of the Supervisor of Shipbuilding Newport News and shipboard duty in surface ships and submarines. His education includes a B.S. from the U.S. Naval Academy and a B.S. in marine engineering and M.S. in noval architecture from Webb Institute of Naval Architecture.

Prior duty has included Design Assistant at the Bureau of Ships Planning and Estimating Assistant at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard Engineering Department on the USS OREGON CITY Damage Control Assistant on the USS PHILIPPINE SEA Ship Superintendent and Docking Office after which he was Design Superintendent at the Boston Naval Shipyard Engineering Instructor at the Naval Postgraduate School Management Engineer and Comptroller at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Professor of Naval Construction at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has been awarded the American Defense Service Medal the American Campaign Medal World War II Victory Medal Navy Occupation Service Medal European Clasp the National Defense Service Medal. Member of the American Society of Naval Engineers American Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers the Instituteo Panamerico de Engenieria Naval Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi. Mr. Joseph A. Cestone has been associated with the Deep Submergence Systems Project since its inception and received an appointment as Head of the Sensors-Navigation Ship Control Branch in 1966. In this capacity he is responsible for design specifications and procurement of sensor devices navigation systems and control equipment for the undersea submersibles and habitats pertaining to the Deep Submergence Program.

作者: KAFALI, K. THE AUTHOR:studied naval architecture at the Department of Naval Architecture Mechanical Engineering Faculty of the Technical University of Istanbul. Graduated in 1948 and has become an Assistant Professor at the Department of Naval Architecture Technical University of Istanbul since 1953. His work is connected generally with problems of theoretical naval architecture. At the time of writing this paper Professor Kafali was a guest at the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It was there that he conducted the research on which the paper is based. The research in this paper was done with appointment supported by the I.C.A. under a program administered by the National Academy of Sciences.

Mr. Vasta is Head of Hull Structures Branch Naval Ship Engineering Center of the Dept. of the Navy with the responsibility for hull structural design of surface ships and submarines and for planning initiating and technically monitoring research in the field of structural mechanics. Mr. Vasta attended New York University receiving the Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1930 and took postgraduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology receiving the Master of Science degree in 1931. He worked in the Structural Mechanics Group of the U. S. Experimental Model Basin from 1931 to 1938. After a short duty at the Headquarters of the U. S. Coast Guard he joined the U. S. Maritime Commission where between 1939 and 1948 he held various positions of responsibility in the Technical Division. Subsequently he joined the former Bureau of Ships first as Head of the Scientific and Research Section from 1948 to 1964 and later as Assistant Chief Naval Architect for Engineering Sciences in the Naval Ship Engineering Center from 1965 to 1966. Mr. Vasta is a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineering and of the American Welding Society and is active in many research panels and committees including the Ship Structure Committee and panels in the Welding Research Council. He is chairman of the Hull Structures Committee of the Society of Naval Architects and chairman of the “Fatigue” panel of the International Ship Structure Congress. Mr. Pohler is Head of the Submarine Structural Mechanics Unit Hull Structures Branch of the Naval Ship Engineering Center with responsibility principally for technical direction of the Navy's submarine structural research program and for development of design criteria for submarine hulls. Mr. Pohler attended the University of Houston receiving the Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering in 1956 took postgraduate work at the University of California receiving the Master of Engineering degree in Naval Architecture in 1959. 作者: MACHOL, MORRIS R. The author is a graduate of Webb Institute of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. He has had wide and diversified experience since his graduation in 1903. In 1909 he presented the first paper on light weight reciprocating parts to the Society of Automotive Engineers. Has done much design and production work. During World War I he was with the Emergency Fleet Corporation where he developed a trend toward management and production engineering which he has followed in many important capacities. In 1947 he received a letter of commendation from UNRRA for his services in development of a Water Transportation Program for the Chinese Government. At the present time he is a Production Engineer in the U.S. Navy Bureau of Ships.

He was subsequently employed at General Dynamics/Electric Boat Division Groton Connecticut where he held positions in their Planning Department as a planning engineer for FBM Submarine Construction and in the Mechanical Division as a design engineer. Motherway went to the Naval Ship Engineering Center Washington D. C. in March of 1966 with the Submarine Hydraulics Section of the Hull Design Branch where he participated in the design of submarine hydraulic systems. He later transferred to the Ocean Engineering Section of the Deck Systems Branch where he participated in design related to deep submergence vehicles and ocean salvage and retrieval systems. During this period at NavSEC he received his Master Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Catholic University of America Washington D. C. From April 1970 to May 1971 he was with the Undersea Long-Range Missile System (ULMS) Submarine Design Development Office in the capacity of Assistant Subsystem Design Director. Currently he is the Senior Project Engineer for the ULMS program at the office of the Supervisor of Shipbuilding Conversion and Repair Groton Connecticut. He is a member of ASNE and ASE. S. R. Heller Jr. a retired Engineering Duty Officer of the United States Navy received his undergraduate education at the University of Michigan in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and in Mathematics. Following typical shipyard duty during World War II he received postgraduate instruction at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology leading to the degrees of Naval Engineer and Doctor of Science in Naval Architecture.
