Computational investigation into resistance characteristics of a full-scale pusher-barge system

In the presence of hydrodynamic motion interference between pusher and multiple barge configurations, a reliable investigation allowing an accurate prediction of her total resistance is obviously required. To achieve such objective, the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach is then proposed to predict the total ship’s resistance of a pusher-barge system in the calm water condition. The various barge’s configurations incorporated with various Froude numbers (Fr) have been considered in the computational simulation incorporated with the full-scale dimension of the pusher-barge. In general, the CFO results revealed that the total resistances of the various configurations of the pusher-barge system had a qualitatively good agreement with the experimental model test results. Merely, the increase of Froude number (Fr=0.128 to 0.308) was proportional to the magnitude of total resistance. In addition, the pusher-barge system of the 33BP configuration provides the highest resistance as compared to others. It should be noted here that the pusher-barges configurations led to the susceptible effect to the total ship’s resistance which resulted in remarkable increase of the effective power values as the substituting their arrangements from the longitudinal configurations and to the lateral ones. This finding provides a very valuable insight aimed at selecting the proper pusher-barge configurations towards reducing the total ship’s resistance.

Old ships will experience a degradation of the structural strength after receiving repeated loads. Decreased strength performance is also caused by structure shape and structural dimensions changes. In steel ships, Dimensional changes will be discovered when the ship is docked, because the material undergo corrosion causing in thinning the shell plate. In this study, a thickness reduction of the shell plate has been simulated to determine the longitudinal response of the ship's structure. A Finite element analysis of ferry Ro-Ro ship's hull was carried out using ANSYS package program. The simulation was carried out to exceed the allowable limit for reducing the thickness plate by the Indonesian Classification Bureau (BKI), which is 20% of the initial plate thickness. Based on simulation result, it was found that an increase of stress at each variation of the reduction in hull plate thickness in hogging and sagging conditions.

An accurate depth map of the environment is critical to the safe operation of autonomous robots and vehicles. Currently, either light detection and ranging (LIDAR) or stereo matching algorithms are used to acquire such depth information. However, a high-resolution LIDAR is expensive and produces sparse depth map at large range; stereo matching algorithms are able to generate denser depth maps but are typically less accurate than LIDAR at long range. This paper combines these approaches together to generate high-quality dense depth maps. Unlike previous approaches that are trained using ground-truth labels, the proposed model adopts a self-supervised training process. Experiments show that the proposed method is able to generate high-quality dense depth maps and performs robustly even with low-resolution inputs. This shows the potential to reduce the cost by using LIDARs with lower resolution in concert with stereo systems while maintaining high resolution.

This study aims to prove the usefulness of a bulbous bow traditional catamaran fishing vessel. Bulbous bow applications are widely used to reduce wave resistance. The fishing vessel resistance was calculated using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic) approach and combined with classical slender body theory. In this research, the application of bulbous bow was being adopted on traditional catamaran fishing vessel to reduce the total resistance. The bulbous bow has adopted based on Kracht method. Modeling procedure was developed by using linear form coefficients. The ship resistance was simulated using Tdyn software which basically Finite Element Method. The results show that adding bulbous bow can decrease or increase the ship's total resistance. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2018.

The common problem occurs in fish mapping using autonomous surface vehicles (ASV) is pitching stability. Some researchers have indicated that problem affects the results of mapping. The target of this system is to design an Autonomous Pitching System (APS) for ASV using numerical simulation software. The simulation is done by implement APS into the system, producing an oscillatory motion from the ASV. For both dynamics of craft in short and long periods, APS with proportional controller (P), proportional-integral controller (PI), and proportional-integral-derivative controller (PID) are developed in order to minimize the oscillatory behaviour. It was found that for the short period dynamics, the APS with PI controller was the optimal controller, followed by the PID controller and then the P controller. For the long period dynamics, the APS with PID controller was optimal.

This study proposes a model to calculate EEOI (Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator) using only public data without any actual operating data which are measured during ship operation. EEOI is usually calculated using the measured information, but since the information is not available except the ship operator, we propose a model using only public data. The public data is including AIS (Automatic Identification System) data and marine environment data. Since the public data mentioned above have a large capacity, it is difficult to estimate the energy efficiency by existing data processing method. Therefore, in this study, big data technology was studied and applied to utilize the large capacity of public data effectively. The proposed model was applied to the example ship to estimate the ship energy efficiency indicator, and the effectiveness of the model was evaluated by comparing the actual results. Patterns of avoidance, adjacency, and association in complex systems design emerge from the system’s underlying logical architecture (functional relationships among components) and physical architecture (component physical properties and spatial location). Understanding the physical–logical architecture interplay that gives rise to patterns of arrangement requires a quantitative approach that bridges both descriptions. Here, we show that statistical physics reveals patterns of avoidance, adjacency, and association across sets of complex, distributed system design solutions. Using an example arrangement problem and tensor network methods, we identify several phenomena in complex systems design, including placement symmetry breaking, propagating correlation, and emergent localization. Our approach generalizes straightforwardly to a broad range of complex systems design settings where it can provide a platform for investigating basic design phenomena. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Heat transport bounds for a truncated model of Rayleigh–Bénard convection via polynomial optimization

Upper bounds on time-averaged heat transport are obtained for an eight-mode Galerkin truncation of Rayleigh’s 1916 model of natural thermal convection. Bounds for the ODE model—an extension of Lorenz’s three-ODE system—are derived by constructing auxiliary functions that satisfy sufficient conditions wherein certain polynomial expressions must be nonnegative. Such conditions are enforced by requiring the polynomial expressions to admit sum-of-squares representations, allowing the resulting bounds to be minimized using semidefinite programming. Sharp or nearly sharp bounds on mean heat transport are computed numerically for numerous values of the model parameters: the Rayleigh and Prandtl numbers and the domain aspect ratio. In all cases where the Rayleigh number is small enough for the ODE model to be quantitatively close to the PDE model, mean heat transport is maximized by steady states. In some cases at larger Rayleigh number, time-periodic states maximize heat transport in the truncated model. Analytical parameter-dependent bounds are derived using quadratic auxiliary functions, and they are sharp for sufficiently small Rayleigh numbers. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Green ship technology is increasingly important in different areas of ship design. Hydrodynamic optimization shape design is an integral part of the overall fuel economy design. To get the optimal design, the geometry modification of ship takes extremely important place in an optimization loop. A conventional non-parametric approach has numerous disadvantages because the geometry is typically generated by low-level entities. In this study, a new bulbous bow modification method was developed for automatic generation and modification of a bulbous bow. A bulbous bow represented by the Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) surfaces. The generated bulbous bow can be automatically modified. In this study, Grasshopper is applied to generate and reconstruct a parametric bulbous bow. And attach the generated bulbous bow to a fixed hull automatically.
