Field Verification of Automated Driving Using Cooperative Infrastructure Platform

This article introduces a field verification of automated driving using the Cooperative Infrastructure Platform being developed by NTT laboratories. The Cooperative Infrastructure Platform aims to ensure stable communication in remote monitoring and improve the safety of automated driving. This platform is also being used as the communication function of the remote control system for automated driving developed by NTT DOCOMO, and field tests are being conducted in collaboration with NTT DOCOMO. © 2025 Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.. Wireless communications, encompassing mobile communications, satellite communications, wireless local area networks (LANs), and fixed wireless systems, play a major role in communication networks. In preparation for the World Radiocommunication Conference 2023 (WRC-23) that was held in November 2023, the International Telecommunication Union - Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R), a de jure standards organization, conducted studies and discussions broader than those limited to Beyond 5th-generation mobile communication system (5G) and 6G. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a private standardization organization, has also started to study specifications after Release 18 under the name "5G-Advanced," as a further evolved version of 5G. The IEEE 802.11 Working Group (WG), a WG of the Standards Association under the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), is studying next-generation wireless LANs. This article introduces these standardization efforts as well as the NTT Group’s activities for standardization of satellite communications, fixed wireless communications, and radio-wave propagation. © 2024 Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.. Incidents often occur in which a senior and/or mobility restricted person is left in a railroad crossing. Seibu Railway Co., with Oki Electric Industry Co., and Marubeni network Solutions Inc., which are suppliers o fthe monitoring camera servicefor railroad crossings, proceeded the study to establish a system that automatically detects a person who is lingering within a railroad crossing even when no pedestrian is walking through the railroad crossing and notify the train driver o fthe existence o fsuch a person. This article describes the process and result o f the introduction test conducted at two railroad crossings in Seibu Railway lines for the detection system for a person lingering in a railroad crossing, which was developed using AI image analysis technology. © 2024 Japan Railway Engineers' Association. The orchestration and management of 5G network slicing (NS) requires cross-domain orchestration across 5G radio access network (RAN), 5G core network (CN), and transport network and also coordination of closed loops of each 5G network segment. We propose a resource orchestration and management architecture for end-to-end (E2E) 5G network slices to automate the flexible and high-performance NS’s management and orchestration. Through developing a prototype of the proposed architecture on an experimental 5G network, the effectiveness of our architecture is proven through prominent use cases certified by ETSI ZSM.
