Neural network-driven parallel accelerated selective image encryption with semantic understanding

Existing batch image encryption schemes often directly encrypt images without considering their source. However, in real-life scenarios, these images are typically part of a larger collection stored in a directory on a computer or in the cloud. To efficiently protect those sensitive images distributed within the collection, we rethink selective image encryption (SIE) from the perspective of batch image encryption and proposes a novel SIE scheme using deep neural networks (DNN) and parallel computing. First, a DNN method is employed to identify sensitive images by analyzing their semantics. Next, a parallel cross-bitplane permutation algorithm is introduced to shuffle the retrieved images in bit-level. Then, a bi-directional diffusion strategy is employed to spread the encryption influence of a pixel to all images. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed scheme effectively understands the semantic of images, identifies sensitive images, and encrypts them with high permutation and diffusion efficiency. Further security analyses show that the proposed algorithm successfully resists various attacks with desired performance, including achieving high information entropy and low correlation coefficients in statistical analysis, and ideal values of the number of pixels changing rate (NPCR) and the unified averaged changing intensity (UACI) to resist differential attack, as well as high key sensitivity.

COTR: Efficient Job Task Recognition for Occupational Information Systems with Class-Incremental Learning

Occupation-specific job tasks (OSTs) refer to the duties, responsibilities, and activities associated with a particular occupation, which define the core functions and performance expectations for those engaged in that profession. Efficient recognition and extraction of OSTs from large-scale job description data are essential for establishing a continually updated occupational information system (OIS), such as O*NET, which serves as critical tools for advancing research in work and labor markets. However, this task presents substantial challenges due to its heavy reliance on domain experts for the labor-intensive annotation of job postings, rendering the process time-consuming and difficult to scale for large-scale implementation. To this end, in this article, we present COTR, a novel data-driven framework designed for the efficient recognition of OSTs from job postings, capable of continually identifying new tasks through class-incremental learning. Specifically, we first employ large language models (LLMs) and prompt learning to develop a three-phase process–“expansion, translation, and generation”–that addresses the critical challenge of the absence of predefined OSTs in non-English labor market data, leveraging O*NET as a foundational reference. Subsequently, we introduce a BERT-based model for OST recognition, incorporating a uniquely designed pair-wise loss function that distills valuable insights from ChatGPT or other LLMs, thereby substantially enhancing recognition performance. In addition, to achieve cost-effective training data annotation, we develop an LLM-based coarse-to-fine candidate OSTs generation algorithm, integrating contrastive active learning to optimize the annotation process through human-machine collaboration. Notably, we design a supervised fine-tuning strategy with a novel encoding technique to optimize LLMs, improving the recall rate of the generated candidate OSTs and achieving up to a 343-fold increase in annotation efficiency compared

TruVRF: Toward Triple-Granularity Verification on Machine Unlearning

The right to be forgotten has incentivized machine unlearning, but a key challenge persists: the lack of reliable methods to verify unlearning conducted by model providers. This gap facilitates dishonest model providers to deceive data contributors. Current approaches often rely on invasive methods like backdoor injection. However, it poses security concerns and is also inapplicable to legacy data—already released data. To tackle this challenge, this work initializes the first non-invasive unlearning verification framework which operates at triple-granularity (class-, volume-, sample-level) to assess the data facticity and volume integrity of machine unlearning. In this paper, we propose a framework, named TruVRF, encompasses three Unlearning-Metrics, each tailored to counter different types of dishonest model providers or servers (Neglecting Server, Lazy Server, Deceiving Server). TruVRF leverages non-invasive model sensitivity to enable multi-granularity verification of unlearning. Specifically, Unlearning-Metric-I checks if the removed class matches the data contributor’s unlearning request, Unlearning-Metric-II measures the amount of unlearned data, and Unlearning-Metric-III validates the correspondence of a specific unlearned sample with the requested deletion. We conducted extensive evaluations of TruVRF efficacy across three datasets, and notably, we also evaluated the effectiveness and computational overhead of TruVRF in real-world applications for the face recognition dataset. Our experimental results demonstrate that TruVRF achieves robust verification performance: Unlearning-Metric-I and -III achieve over 90% verification accuracy on average against dishonest servers, while Unlearning-Metric-II maintains an inference deviation within 4.8% to 8.2%. Additionally, TruVRF demonstrates generalizability across diverse conditions, including varying numbers of unlearned classes and sample volumes. Medication recommendation aims to suggest personalized drug combinations to patients based on their longitudinal medical histories stored in electronic health record (EHR) datasets. Patients’ Dynamic Treatment Regimes (DTRs) determine how patients’ drug combinations change along with the evolution of disease treatment. DTRs are effective for comprehending disease-treatment dynamics and for recommending a timely and personalized combination of medications for patients. However, existing medication recommender systems (MRSs) overlook the multiple treatment pathways generated by the intervention of DTRs and can only recommend a single treatment paradigm, ignoring the fact that patients may be at different treatment stages and thus require different treatment regime. Such disregard leads to a significant limitation in recommending personalized medication combinations tailored to different treatment stages, yielding greatly compromised accuracy and applicability of MRSs. Moreover, existing methods often overlook the time interval information over patients’ successive visits, which is critical to indicate patients’ treatment evolution. To address these significant gaps, we propose a Time-aware Medication Recommendation Framework via Intervention of Dynamic Treatment Regimes, called MR-DTR. To explicitly illustrate the intervention processes of DTRs on similar patients, we employ a co-guided graph to connect various patient sequences. In addition, to fully utilize the time interval information, we design a time-aware guidance mechanism dedicated to the co-guided graph to efficiently learn medication representation using the patient’s guidance information. We also introduce relative time intervals in the encoder to act as positional information. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate that MR-DTR surpasses state-of-the-art models in terms of recommendation performance. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Learning Modality-Invariant Feature for Multimodal Image Matching via Knowledge Distillation

Multimodal remote sensing image matching is essential for multisource information fusion. Recently, learning-based feature matching networks have significantly enhanced the performance of unimodal image matching tasks through data-driven approaches. However, progress in applying these learning-based methods to multimodal image matching has been slower. A major obstacle is the substantial nonlinear radiometric differences between modalities, which require networks to learn modality-invariant features from large amounts of paired data. To address this, we propose EMINet, an efficient method for learning modality-invariant features from limited data to improve matching performance. Our approach constructs a high-performance teacher network by combining the DINOv2 foundational model, the keypoint and descriptor extraction network SuperPoint, and the feature matching network SuperGlue. Leveraging the strong semantic representation capability of DINOv2, the teacher network achieves excellent cross-modality matching ability. To meet low-latency requirements in practical applications, we introduce two novel knowledge distillation strategies: semantic window relation distillation (SWRD) and cross-triplet descriptor distillation (CTDD). SWRD improves the discriminative power of the student network’s descriptors by learning patch-level distributions from DINOv2, while CTDD enforces cross-modality triplet constraints to enhance modality invariance of the student network. Experimental results demonstrate that EMINet outperforms several state-of-the-art methods on various datasets, including optical-SAR, optical-NIR, and optical-IR datasets. © 1980-2012 IEEE.

TFSG: A Self-Supervised Guided Graph Learning Method for Traffic Flow Prediction

With the rapid development of the Internet of Things, a large amount of real-time traffic data has been collected. How to fully utilize these traffic data for rational planning of intelligent transportation systems is an important issue. Graph learning has proved to be potential tools for modeling complex spatiotemporal relationships in addressing traffic flow prediction problems. Existing methods usually relied on the graph structure constructed from predefined distance information between different regions. However, affected by factors such as road capacity, traffic rules etc., distance bias is non-trivial to affect traffic flow in reality. Besides, the distance based static transportation network structure is also difficult to describe the dynamic and uncertainty of road traffic in complex situations. To address the aforementioned issues, this article proposes an enhanced graph generation approach for traffic flow prediction, which is based on Temporal-Frequency Self-Supervised Guided Graph Learning (TFSG). The method progressively guides the feature latent representation to approach the target latent representation in both the time domain and frequency domain. Meanwhile, a multi-head self-attention mechanism is introduced to capture dependencies among different time series patches, constructing an enhanced graph structure for downstream prediction tasks. Experimental results first independently evaluated the qualities of the generated graphs. Subsequently, by using five public traffic datasets, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are further verified. © 2014 IEEE.

The reconstruction of demographic history using ancient and modern genomic resources reveals extensive interactions and admixture between ancient nomadic pastoralists and the social organizations of the Chinese Central ***,the extent to which Y-chromosome genetic legacies from nomadic emperor-related ancestral lineages influence the Chinese paternal gene pool remains ***,we genotype 2717 ethnolinguistically diverse samples belonging to C2a lineages,perform whole-genome sequencing on 997 representative samples,and integrate these data with ancient genomic *** reconstruct the evolutionary histories of Northern Zhou-,Qing emperor-,and pastoralist-related lineages to assess their genetic impact on modern Chinese *** reassembled fine-scale Ychromosome phylogeny identifies deep divergence and five Neolithic expansion events contributing differently to the formation of northern Chinese *** modeling indicates that the nomadic empires of the Northern Zhou and Qing dynasties genetically originated from the Mongolian *** topology and shared haplotype patterns show that three upstream ancestors of Northern Zhou(C2a1a1b1a2a1b-FGC28857),Donghu tribe(C2a1a1b1-F1756),and Qing(C2a1a3a2-F10283)emperor-related lineages expanded during the middle Neolithic,contributing significantly to genetic flow between ancient northeastern Asians and modern East ***,this study reveals limited direct contributions of Emperor Wu of Northern Zhou’s lineages to modern East Asians.

TPE for JPEG images with Dynamic M-ary Decomposition and Adaptive Threshold Constraints

Traditional JPEG image encryption that prioritizes solely confidentiality fails to account for the pressing usability requirements of cloud-based environments, thus boosting the boom in thumbnail-preserving encryption (TPE) to balance image privacy and usability. However, existing TPE schemes for JPEG images face numerous challenges, such as insufficient security, inability to achieve lossless decryption, and high file extension. To address these challenges, we propose a TPE scheme based on dynamic M-ary decomposition and adaptive threshold constraints (TPE-MDTC). First, the valid ranges of quantized DC coefficients for JPEG images are determined. Then, a sum-preserving encryption method for quantized DC coefficients with compliance threshold constraints is designed using the bit-plane permutation to preserve thumbnails with high accuracy. Next, the introduction of dynamic M-ary decomposition effectively changes bit statistical characteristics preserved by bit-plane permutation, enhancing the ciphertext security. Finally, a quantized AC encryption method with RV (Run/Value) pair global permutation is proposed, effectively modifying the unit block features, thereby significantly improving the security and attack resistance of encrypted images. Experimental results show that the proposed TPE-MDTC scheme can reconstruct the original JPEG images without loss, and the generated ciphertext images exhibit significant advantages over previous schemes regarding file extension and security. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

Malicious Clients and Contribution Co-Aware Federated Unlearning

Existing federated unlearning methods to eliminate the negative impact of malicious clients on the global model are influenced by unreasonable assumptions (e.g., an auxiliary dataset) or fail to balance model performance and efficiency. To overcome these shortcomings, we propose a malicious clients and contribution co-aware federated unlearning (MCC-Fed) method. Specifically, we introduce a method for detecting malicious clients to reduce their impact on the global model. Next, we design a contribution-aware metric, which accurately quantifies the negative impact of malicious clients on the global calculating their historical contribution ratio. Then, based on this metric, we propose a novel federated unlearning method in which benign clients use the contribution-aware metric as a regularization term to unlearn the influence of malicious clients, and restoring model performance. Experimental results demonstrate that our method effectively addresses the issue of excessive unlearning during the unlearning process, improves the efficiency of performance recovery, and enhances robustness against malicious clients. © 2020 IEEE.
