Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).

We propose a visual tele-AR system, which is a combination of tele-existence and AR techniques. By wearing a video see-through HMD and moving his head, a user in this system is able to tele-operate a remote pan-tilt platform to observe the remote scene. Unlike traditional tele-existence systems which use mechanical or magnetic sensors for tele-operation, we propose a novel tele-operation method based on real-time tracking of master and slave cameras. The master camera is a component of the video see-through HMD mounted in front of user's eyes, while the slave camera is carried by a remote platform. We estimate use's head motion by tracking the master camera in real time, and translate head motions into motion commands to drive the remote pan-tilt platform. Ideally, motion of the remote platform will be exactly the same as user's head. Unfortunately, motion speed of the slave platform is usually limited by their mechanical capability, which may cause pose inconsistence between master and slave cameras, especially when user's head moves fast. We solve this problem by also tracking slave camera in real time, and warping video images according to difference between master and slave camera pose. Since slave camera is tracked, we can integrate virtual objects into remote scene, giving the user an augmented visual sense. To reduce system delay, our implementation is accelerated GPU parallel computation. Experimental results show the efficiency and robustness of our method. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, a new method was applied to predict the protein subcellular localization. The features used in the paper were the Distance frequency (DF), the Physical and chemical composition (PCC) and the Pseudo Amino Acid composition (PseAA). The classifier was integrated by Binary tree and Error-Correcting Output Coding (ECOC) based six Artifical neural networks (ANN). The prediction ability was evaluated by 5-jackknife cross-validation. By comparing its results with other methods, such as Lei-SVM and ESVM, the experimental result demonstrated that our method outperformed their predictions, and indicate the new approach is feasible and effective. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Large scale scientific and commercial applications consume and producepetabytes of data. This data needs to be safely stored, cataloged and reproducedwith high-performance. The current generation of single headed NAS(network Attached Storage) based systems such as NFS is not able to provide anacceptable level of performance to these types of demanding applications. ClusteredNAS have evolved to meet the storage demands of these demanding ***, the performance of these Clustered NAS solutions is limited bythe communication protocol being used, usually TCP/IP. In this paper, we propose,design and evaluate a clustered NAS; pNFS over RDMA on InfiniBand. Our resultsshow that for a sequential workload on 8 data servers, the pNFS over RDMAdesign can achieve a peak aggregate Read throughput of up to 5,029 MB/s, a maximumimprovement of 188% over the TCP/IP transport and a Write throughput of1,872 MB/s; a maximum improvement of 150% over the corresponding TCP/IPtransport throughput. Evaluations with other type of workloads and traces showan improvement in performance of up to 27%. Finally, our design of pNFS overRDMA improves the performance of BTIO relative to the Lustre file system.

High computational power of commodity PCs combined with the emergence of low latency and high bandwidth interconnects has escalated the trends of cluster computing. Clusters with InfiniBand are being deployed, as reflected in the TOP 500 Supercomputer rankings. However, increasing scale of these clusters has reduced the Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of components. network component is one such component of clusters, where failure of network Interface Cards (NICs), cables and/or switches breaks existing path(s) of communication. InfiniBand provides a hardware mechanism, Automatic Path Migration (APM), which allows user transparent detection and recovery from network fault(s), without application restart. In this paper, we design a set of modules;which work together for providing network fault tolerance for user level applications leveraging the APM feature. Our performance evaluation at the MPI Layer shows that APM incurs negligible overhead in the absence of faults in the system. In the presence of network faults, APM incurs negligible overhead for reasonably long running applications. © 2007 IEEE.

InfiniBand is becoming increasingly popular in the area of cluster computing due to its open standard and high performance. I/O interfaces like PCI-Express and GX+ are being introduced as next generation technologies to drive InfiniBand with very high throughput. HCAs with throughput of 8x on PCI-Express have become available. Recently, support for HCAs with 12x throughput on GX+ has been announced. In this paper, we design a Message Passing Interface (MPI) on IBM 12x Dual-Port HCAs, which consist of multiple send/recv engines per port. We propose and study the impact of various communication scheduling policies (binding, striping and round robin). based on this study, we present a new policy, EPC (Enhanced point-to-point and collective), which incorporates different kinds of communication patterns;point-to-point (blocking, non-blocking) and collective communication, for data transfer. We implement our design and evaluate it with micro-benchmarks, collective communication and NAS parallel benchmarks. Using EPC on a 12x InfiniBand cluster with one HCA and one port, we can improve the performance by 41% with ping-pong latency test and 63-65% with the unidirectional and bi-directional bandwidth tests, compared with the default single-rail MPI implementation. Our evaluation on NAS Parallel Benchmarks shows an improvement of 7-13% in execution time for Integer Sort and Fourier Transform. © 2007 IEEE.

Cluster file systems and Storage Area networks (SAN) make use of network 10 to achieve higher 10 bandwidth. Effective integration of networking mechanisms is important to their performance. In this paper, we perform an evaluation of a popular cluster file system, Lustre, over two of the leading high speed cluster interconnects: InfiniBand and Quadrics. Our evaluation is performed with both sequential 10 and parallel 10 benchmarks in order to explore the capacity of Lustre under different communication characteristics. Experimental results show that direct implementations of Lustre over both interconnects can improve its performance, compared to an IP emulation over InfiniBand (IPoIB). The performance of Lustre over Quadrics is comparable to that of Lustre over InfiniBand with the platforms we have. Latest InfiniBand products can embrace latest technologies, such as PCI-Express and DDR, and provide higher capacity. Our results show that over a Lustre file system with two Object Storage Servers (OSSs), InfiniBand with PCI-Express technology can improve Lustre write performance by 24%. Furthermore, our experimental results indicate that Lustre meta-data operations do not scale with an increasing number of OSSs, in spite of using high performance interconnects. © 2006 IEEE.

Supporting scalable and efficient parallel programs is a major challenge in parallel computing with the widespread adoption of large-scale computer clusters and supercomputers. One of the pronounced scalability challenges is the management of connections between parallel processes, especially over connection-oriented interconnects such as VIA and InfiniBand. In this paper, we take on the challenge of designing efficient connection management for parallel programs over InfiniBand clusters. We propose adaptive connection management (ACM) to dynamically control the establishment of InfiniBand reliable connections (RC) based on the communication frequency between MPI processes. We have investigated two different ACM algorithms: an on-demand algorithm that starts with no InfiniBand RC connections;and a partial static algorithm with only 2 * logN number of InfiniBand RC connections initially. We have designed and implemented both ACM algorithms in MVAPICH to study their benefits. Two mechanisms have been exploited for the establishment of new RC connections: one using InfiniBand unreliable datagram and the other using InfiniBand connection management. For both mechanisms, MPI communication issues, such as progress rules, reliability and race conditions are handled to ensure efficient and lightweight connection management. Our experimental results indicate that ACM algorithms can benefit parallel programs in terms of the process initiation time, the number of active connections, and the resource usage. For parallel programs on a 16-node cluster, they can reduce the process initiation time by 15% and the initial memory usage by 18%. © 2006 IEEE.
