Existing graph clustering networks heavily rely on a predefined yet fixed graph, which can lead to failures when the initial graph fails to accurately capture the data topology structure of the embedding space. In order to address this issue, we propose a novel clustering network called Embedding-Induced Graph Refinement Clustering network (EGRC-Net), which effectively utilizes the learned embedding to adaptively refine the initial graph and enhance the clustering performance. To begin, we leverage both semantic and topological information by employing a vanilla auto-encoder and a graph convolution network, respectively, to learn a latent feature representation. Subsequently, we utilize the local geometric structure within the feature embedding space to construct an adjacency matrix for the graph. This adjacency matrix is dynamically fused with the initial one using our proposed fusion architecture. To train the network in an unsupervised manner, we minimize the Jeffreys divergence between multiple derived distributions. Additionally, we introduce an improved approximate personalized propagation of neural predictions to replace the standard graph convolution network, enabling EGRC-Net to scale effectively. Through extensive experiments conducted on nine widely-used benchmark datasets, we demonstrate that our proposed methods consistently outperform several state-of-the-art approaches. Notably, EGRC-Net achieves an improvement of more than 11.99% in Adjusted Rand Index (ARI) over the best baseline on the DBLP dataset. Furthermore, our scalable approach exhibits a 10.73% gain in ARI while reducing memory usage by 33.73% and decreasing running time by 19.71%. Transcriptome prediction from genetic variation data is an important task in the privacy-preserving and biometrics field, which can better protect genomic data and achieve biometric recognition through transcriptome. Many transcriptome prediction methods have achieved good accuracy from genetic variation data. However, these traditional transcriptome prediction methods have the problems of linear assumption, overfitting, expose personal privacy, and extensive manual optimization. To solve these shortcomings, we propose an attention-based transcriptome prediction model from genetic variation named RATPM that improves the accuracy of transcriptome prediction and protects participant genomic data. In RATPM, we introduce and improve the deep learning model with multi-head self-attention into the transcriptome prediction stage of Predixcan, which uncovers the non-linear relationship between genetic variation and transcriptome. Moreover, we introduce a residual attention module to generate attention-aware features and extract more accurate features at different levels from genetic variation. Furthermore, we introduce the BERT pre-training module to encode genetic variation fully utilizing their contextual information. Our research enables scientific institutions to publish only predicted transcriptomic data for biometric purposes, thus protecting the genomic information of the subjects. Finally, we evaluated our model on the 1000 Genomes and Geuvadis projects datasets to compare with other baseline models.

A computer vision system using low-resolution image sensors can provide intelligent services (e.g., activity recognition) but preserve unnecessary visual privacy information from the hardware level. However, preserving visual privacy and enabling accurate machine recognition have adversarial needs on image resolution. Modeling the trade-off of privacy preservation and machine recognition performance can guide future privacy-preserving computer vision systems using low-resolution image sensors. In this paper, using the at-home activity of daily livings (ADLs) as the scenario, we first obtained the most important visual privacy features through a user survey. Then we quantified and analyzed the effects of image resolution on human and machine recognition performance in activity recognition and privacy awareness tasks. We also investigated how modern image super-resolution techniques influence these effects. based on the results, we proposed a method for modeling the trade-off of privacy preservation and activity recognition on low-resolution images. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

In this paper, a semantic communication framework for image transmission is investigated. In the framework, a server transmits image data to a set of users utilizing semantic communication techniques, which enable the server to transmit only the semantic information that accurately captures the meaning of an image. To evaluate the performance of the studied semantic communication system, we propose a multimodal metric called image-to-graph semantic similarity (ISS). The significance of this new metric is that it can measure the correlation of the meaning between semantic information and the original image. To meet the ISS requirement of each user, the server must jointly determine the semantic information to be transmitted and the resource blocks (RBs) used for semantic information transmission. We formulate this problem as an optimization problem whose goal is to minimize the average transmission latency while reaching the ISS requirement. To solve this problem, we propose a model-based actor critic deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm. Compared to traditional actor critic DRL, in the proposed algorithm, we design a novel value function to improve the action exploration thus improving the probability of finding an optimal solution. Simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce the transmission delay by 16.4% and improves the convergence speed by up to 50% compared to the traditional actor critic DRL.

Deepfake Detection: A Comprehensive Survey from the Reliability Perspective

The mushroomed Deepfake synthetic materials circulated on the internet have raised a profound social impact on politicians, celebrities, and individuals worldwide. In this survey, we provide a thorough review of the existing Deepfake detection studies from the reliability perspective. We identify three reliability-oriented research challenges in the current Deepfake detection domain: transferability, interpretability, and robustness. Moreover, while solutions have been frequently addressed regarding the three challenges, the general reliability of a detection model has been barely considered, leading to the lack of reliable evidence in real-life usages and even for prosecutions on Deepfake-related cases in court. We, therefore, introduce a model reliability study metric using statistical random sampling knowledge and the publicly available benchmark datasets to review the reliability of the existing detection models on arbitrary Deepfake candidate suspects. Case studies are further executed to justify the real-life Deepfake cases including different groups of victims with the help of the reliably qualified detection models as reviewed in this survey. Reviews and experiments on the existing approaches provide informative discussions and future research directions for Deepfake detection. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we consider the design of an energy efficient collaborative federated learning (CFL) methodology where devices exchange their local FL parameters with a subset of their neighbors without reliance on a parameter server. In the considered model, mobile devices implement the designed CFL to train their local FL models using their own datasets over a realistic wireless network. Due to the limited wireless resources and user movements, each device may not be able to transmit its FL parameters with all neighboring devices. Therefore, each device must select a subset of devices to share its FL parameters and optimize the transmit power. This problem is formulated as an optimization problem, whose goal is to minimize CFL training energy consumption while satisfying the delay and CFL training loss requirements. To solve this problem, a two-stage solution is proposed. At the first stage, a graph neural network (GNN) based algorithm is proposed, which enables each device to individually determine the subset of devices to transmit FL parameters using its neighboring devices' location and connection information. Compared to standard iterative algorithms that need to iteratively optimize device connections and transmit power, the proposed GNN based method can directly obtain the optimal device connections without iterative optimization. Given the optimal device connections, at the second stage, each device can directly obtain the optimal transmit power. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can decrease energy consumption by up to 46% compared to the algorithm where each device will directly connect to its first and second nearest neighbors.

In the fields of computational biology and healthcare systems, there is a growing use of genomic data from cancer to improve diagnostic accuracy and to formulate patient-specific tumor treatment strategies. Cancer genomics allow researchers to define the genome instabilities and mutations associated with tumor growth, poor diagnosis, and immune cells heterogeneity in the cancer context. This molecular taxonomy of cancer provides a more precise diagnosis to better fight solid tumors and enhance the treatment strategy. Single-cell RNA sequencing techniques in cancer re-search enable the detailed examination of gene expression on a cell-by-cell basis, shedding light on the diversity within the tumor microenvironment. In addition, they can reconstruct evolutionary lineages and detect rare subpopulations. It is important to perform pan-cancer analysis to examine the similarities and dissimilarities in different tumor microenvironments. This study provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of T-cell populations across breast, colorectal, liver, lung, and pancreatic cancers, unveiling T-cell heterogeneity and gene expression patterns specific to these tumors. By analyzing single-cell RNA sequencing data from breast, colorectal, liver, lung, and pancreatic cancers, our research fills a crucial gap in understanding the diverse immune environments of these malignancies. The study highlights similarities and differences in T-cell populations across these cancers, providing insights for cancer immunotherapy strategies. Our insights into gene expression correlations with tumor progression have significant implications for immunotherapy strategies, suggesting potential biomarkers for personalized treatment approaches and highlighting key molecular targets for future therapeutic development. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Fusing Bluetooth with Pedestrian Dead Reckoning: A Floor Plan-Assisted Positioning Approach

Floor plans can provide valuable prior information that helps enhance the accuracy of indoor positioning systems. However, existing research typically faces challenges in efficiently leveraging floor plan information and applying it to complex indoor layouts. To fully exploit information from floor plans for positioning, we propose a floor plan-assisted fusion positioning algorithm (FP-BP) using Bluetooth low energy (BLE) and pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR). In the considered system, a user holding a smartphone walks through a positioning area with BLE beacons installed on the ceiling, and can locate himself in real time. In particular, FP-BP consists of two phases. In the offline phase, FP-BP programmatically extracts map features from a stylized floor plan based on their binary masks, and constructs a mapping function to identify the corresponding map feature of any given position on the map. In the online phase, FP-BP continuously computes BLE positions and PDR results from BLE signals and smartphone sensors, where a novel grid-based maximum likelihood estimation (GML) algorithm is introduced to enhance BLE positioning. Then, a particle filter is used to fuse them and obtain an initial estimate. Finally, FP-BP performs post-position correction to obtain the final position based on its specific map feature. Experimental results show that FP-BP can achieve a real-time mean positioning accuracy of 1.19 m, representing an improvement of over 28% compared to existing floor plan-fused baseline algorithms. Edge Intelligence (EI) allows Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications to run at the edge, where data analysis and decision-making can be performed in real-time and close to data sources. To protect data privacy and unify data silos distributed among end devices in EI, Federated Learning (FL) is proposed for collaborative training of shared AI models across multiple devices without compromising data privacy. However, the prevailing FL approaches cannot guarantee model generalization and adaptation on heterogeneous clients. Recently, Personalized Federated Learning (PFL) has drawn growing awareness in EI, as it enables a productive balance between local-specific training requirements inherent in devices and global-generalized optimization objectives for satisfactory performance. However, most existing PFL methods are based on the Parameters Interaction-based Architecture (PIA) represented by FedAvg, which suffers from unaffordable communication burdens due to large-scale parameters transmission between devices and the edge server. In contrast, Logits Interaction-based Architecture (LIA) allows to update model parameters with logits transfer and gains the advantages of communication lightweight and heterogeneous on-device model allowance compared to PIA. Nevertheless, previous LIA methods attempt to achieve satisfactory performance either relying on unrealistic public datasets or increasing communication overhead for additional information transmission other than logits. To tackle this dilemma, we propose a knowledge cache-driven PFL architecture, named FedCache, which reserves a knowledge cache on the server for fetching personalized knowledge from the samples with similar hashes to each given on-device sample. During the training phase, ensemble distillation is applied to on-device models for constructive optimization with personalized knowledge transferred from the server-side knowledge cache.
