Structural coloration generates colors by the interaction between incident light and micro-or nanoscale *** has received tremendous interest for decades,due to advantages including robustness against bleaching and environmentally friendly properties(compared with conventional pigments and dyes).As a versatile coloration strategy,the tuning of structural colors based on micro-and nanoscale photonic structures has been extensively explored and can enable a broad range of applications including displays,anti-counterfeiting,and ***,scholarly research on structural colors has had limited impact on commercial products because of their disadvantages in cost,scalability,and *** this review,we analyze the key challenges and opportunities in the development of structural *** first summarize the fundamental mechanisms and design strategies for structural colors while reviewing the recent progress in realizing dynamic structural *** promising potential applications including optical information processing and displays are also discussed while elucidating the most prominent challenges that prevent them from translating into technologies on the ***,we address the new opportunities that are underexplored by the structural coloration community but can be achieved through multidisciplinary research within the emerging research areas.

Semi-parametric inference based on adaptively collected data

Many standard estimators, when applied to adaptively collected data, fail to be asymptotically normal, thereby complicating the construction of confidence intervals. We address this challenge in a semi-parametric context: estimating the parameter vector of a generalized linear regression model contaminated by a non-parametric nuisance component. We construct suitably weighted estimating equations that account for adaptivity in data collection, and provide conditions under which the associated estimates are asymptotically normal. Our results characterize the degree of "explorability" required for asymptotic normality to hold. For the simpler problem of estimating a linear functional, we provide similar guarantees under much weaker assumptions. We illustrate our general theory with concrete consequences for various problems, including standard linear bandits and sparse generalized bandits, and compare with other methods via simulation studies. Audio deepfake detection is an emerging topic in the artificial intelligence community. The second Audio Deepfake Detection Challenge (ADD 2023) aims to spur researchers around the world to build new innovative technologies that can further accelerate and foster research on detecting and analyzing deepfake speech utterances. Different from previous challenges (e.g. ADD 2022), ADD 2023 focuses on surpassing the constraints of binary real/fake classification, and actually localizing the manipulated intervals in a partially fake speech as well as pinpointing the source responsible for generating any fake audio. Furthermore, ADD 2023 includes more rounds of evaluation for the fake audio game sub-challenge. The ADD 2023 challenge includes three subchallenges: audio fake game (FG), manipulation region location (RL) and deepfake algorithm recognition (AR). This paper describes the datasets, evaluation metrics, and protocols. Some findings are also reported in audio deepfake detection tasks. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Illegitimate intelligent reflective surfaces (IRSs) can pose significant physical layer security risks on multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems. Recently, a DISCO approach has been proposed an illegitimate IRS with random and time-varying reflection coefficients, referred to as a “disco” IRS (DIRS). Such DIRS can attack MU-MISO systems without relying on either jamming power or channel state information (CSI), and classical anti-jamming techniques are in-effective for the DIRS-based fully-passive jammers (DIRS-based FPJs). In this paper, we propose an IRS-enhanced anti-jamming precoder against DIRS-based FPJs that requires only statistical rather than instantaneous CSI of the DIRS-jammed channels. Specifically, a legitimate IRS is introduced to reduce the strength of the DIRS-based jamming relative to the transmit signals at a legitimate user (LU). In addition, the active beamforming at the legitimate access point (AP) is designed to maximize the signal-to-jamming-plus-noise ratios (SJNRs). Numerical results are presented to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed IRS-enhanced anti-jamming precoder against DIRS-based FPJs.

Smart grid resource allocation (SGRA) is a large-scale demand response optimization problem to lower the electricity cost of customers by intelligently shifting their schedulable devices via an aggregator. The SGRA problem aims to maximize the aggregator profit while still considering the inconvenience and the availability constraints of each customer's assets. A heuristic approach provides a reliable method to find near-optimal solutions to non-convex, complex, and multi-dimensional problems by reducing the computational time and not relying on gradients. To further improve the computational time of the heuristics, high-performance parallel computing concepts can be used to divide the formulated problem into smaller sub-problems. This research proposes a leader-follower based parallel Accelerated Particle Swarm Optimization (APSO) to find near-optimal solutions of SGRA using the OpenMP framework in MATLAB. The leader-follower topology allows the parallel execution of each particle, resulting in lower execution time. The proposed parallel APSO was both significantly faster (2 - 7×) than existing SGRA literature methods, and achieves similar aggregator profit, customer savings, and peak demand reduction.

This note studies state estimation in wireless networked control systems with secrecy against eavesdropping. Specifically, a sensor transmits a system state information to the estimator over a legitimate user link, and an eavesdropper overhears these data over its link independent of the user link. Each connection may be affected by packet losses and is modeled by a finite-state Markov channel (FSMC), an abstraction widely used to design wireless communication systems. This paper presents a novel concept of optimal mean square expected secrecy over FSMCs and delineates the design of a secrecy parameter requiring the user mean square estimation error (MSE) to be bounded and eavesdropper MSE unbounded. We illustrate the developed results on an example of an inverted pendulum on a cart whose parameters are estimated remotely over a wireless link exposed to an eavesdropper.

This paper investigates the energy-efficient beamforming design in a simultaneous transmission and reflection-reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) assisted wireless communication system, where the antenna selection scheme is adopted. An energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem is formulated by optimizing the transmit beamformers and the phase shift vectors subject to the power budget constraint of the base station (BS), the maximum transmit power constraint per antenna and the users' data rate requirements. An alternating optimization-based algorithm is proposed to tackle the coupled variables, and the quadratic transform is used to deal with the fractional formulations. Simulation results demonstrate that the antenna selection scheme can significantly improve the EE performance by suppressing the energy consumption due to massive antennas. With the assistance of the STAR-RIS, the EE performance is further enhanced.

Autonomous inspection of dark, confined, and feature-poor spaces requires robotic platforms to utilize accurate and reliable localization systems for safe and reliable operation. This paper presents an absolute localization system for highly feature-poor spaces, using visual inertial odometry and GPU-based point cloud registrations for limited field-of-view sensors. The extracted structural elements from sensor scans, along side IMU measurements, are used to limit the search area for the GPU-based point cloud registrations. We employ Stein-ICP which is an uncertainty aware variant of ICP. The 3D registrations are then fused with a visual-inertial odometry estimate in an Extended Kalman Filter to provide a fast and accurate absolute pose estimate. The proposed localization system is tested in both a simulated environment and in a mock-up model of a chemical distillation column - both highly feature-poor areas.

Embedding of integrated systems via Additive Manufacturing (AM) offers the potential to save weight, space, and time in the production of electronics and vehicles. Of specific interest are embedded electrical systems that operate in the radiofrequency (RF) range as they have great potential utility in communication systems and aircraft avionics including navigation. However, systems in this frequency range pose unique manufacturing challenges such as the need to minimize impedance discontinuities in the system. In this work, the authors explore various techniques for embedding RF structures such as antennas and filters via a multi-material jetting AM process. Specifically, the dielectric constants and loss tangents of Vero White and Tango Black polymers were determined to facilitate the design of RF structures with these materials. It is shown that measurements of S-parameters of the resultant embedded RF structures approach or match the performance of non-embedded electronics. © SFF *** rights reserved.
