Designing efficient and labor-saving prosthetic hands requires powerful hand gesture recognition algorithms that can achieve high accuracy with limited complexity and latency. In this context, the paper proposes a compact deep learning framework referred to as the CT-HGR, which employs a vision transformer network to conduct hand gesture recognition using high-density sEMG (HD-sEMG) signals. Taking advantage of the attention mechanism, which is incorporated into the transformer architectures, our proposed CT-HGR framework overcomes major constraints associated with most of the existing deep learning models such as model complexity;requiring feature engineering;inability to consider both temporal and spatial information of HD-sEMG signals, and;requiring a large number of training samples. The attention mechanism in the proposed model identifies similarities among different data segments with a greater capacity for parallel computations and addresses the memory limitation problems while dealing with inputs of large sequence lengths. CT-HGR can be trained from scratch without any need for transfer learning and can simultaneously extract both temporal and spatial features of HD-sEMG data. Additionally, the CT-HGR framework can perform instantaneous recognition using sEMG image spatially composed from HD-sEMG signals. A variant of the CT-HGR is also designed to incorporate microscopic neural drive information in the form of Motor Unit Spike Trains (MUSTs) extracted from HD-sEMG signals using Blind Source Separation (BSS). This variant is combined with its baseline version via a hybrid architecture to evaluate potentials of fusing macroscopic and microscopic neural drive information. The utilized HD-sEMG dataset involves 128 electrodes that collect the signals related to 65 isometric hand gestures of 20 subjects. ERASE-Net: Efficient Segmentation Networks for Automotive Radar Signals

Among various sensors for assisted and autonomous driving systems, automotive radar has been considered as a robust and low-cost solution even in adverse weather or lighting conditions. With the recent development of radar technologies and open-sourced annotated data sets, semantic segmentation with radar signals has become very promising. However, existing methods are either computationally expensive or discard significant amounts of valuable information from raw 3D radar signals by reducing them to 2D planes via averaging. In this work, we introduce ERASE-Net, an Efficient RAdar SEgmentation Network to segment the raw radar signals semantically. The core of our approach is the novel detect-then-segment method for raw radar signals. It first detects the center point of each object, then extracts a compact radar signal representation, and finally performs semantic segmentation. We show that our method can achieve superior performance on radar semantic segmentation task compared to the state-of-the-art (SOTA) technique. Furthermore, our approach requires up to 20× less computational resources. Finally, we show that the proposed ERASE-Net can be compressed by 40% without significant loss in performance, significantly more than the SOTA network, which makes it a more promising candidate for practical automotive applications. In transiting from one civilization to another, technology has played a vital and positive role. In the 21 st century, one of the digital developments that is paving ways for human life improvement is machine-assisted technology using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Artificial Intelligence has successfully enhanced man’s capacity in solving complex problems and processes. However, as developed nations continue to reap from the adoption of AI in various fields of human endeavors, the continent of Africa has remained behind, especially in AI-based skills and research. Various governments in developing nations have encouraged the adoption of AI, especially in institutions of learning. However, theoretical adoption without practical experience has remained an ineffective way of bridging the digital divide. In this paper we present the outcome of a practical approach to bridging the AI divide among students and researchers in Africa through funding support from the Google TensorFlow College Outreach Award. A 3-day hybrid bootcamp was organized (11 th to 13 th December, 2023) using the Google funding in order to equip postgraduate students and researchers with AI and collaborative research skills. A pre-survey method was employed to ascertain the knowledge level of the bootcamp participants. From the pre-surveyed feedback, training sessions on various AI domains were presented, and participant equipped with practical AI skills using a deployed AI-based cloud programming platform running on the private Federated Genomic Cloud (FEDGEN) infrastructure at Covenant University. A post-survey feedback was used to ascertain the effectiveness of this approach. A comparative analysis of the pre-survey and post-survey reveals a 70% improvement of AI skills among participants. This shows that having continuous training session for students and researchers is an effective method in closing the AI skills gap between developed and developing nations.

Robot swarms promise to replace humans in complex scenarios like resource exploration, environmental monitoring, and military missions. These complex scenarios require robots to be able to complete multiple tasks at the same time adaptively. From the point of view of statistical mechanics, the phenomenon of the multiply states of a given system is a kind of partial synchronization. Inspired by biological groups such as flocks of birds and schools of fish, we model the robots as self-propelled particles with Kuramoto-Sakaguchi like interactions. We uncover the state of the robot swarm can be manipulated using the phase lag of the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi like interactions. The system is partially synchronized at the edge between order and disorder, and the robots present two distinguished motion patterns, one is completely periodic movement, and the other one is chaos. This study provides new insights into the collaboration of robot swarms.

Digitalization is recognized as a powerful enabler for decarbonizing the building sector. The International Energy Agency has highlighted its potential to improve safety, productivity, accessibility, and sustainability of energy systems. This work aims to present innovative applications of digital twins within the European Project DigiBUILD, focusing on optimizing energy systems for enhanced efficiency and reduced carbon footprint. The architecture of the developed digital twins w detailed, focusing on data collection, services description, and their implementation. Through three detailed case studies, the paper explores real applications of digital twins: the Heron pilot, whose aim is to manage a cluster of buildings and optimally charges electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions; Veolia, where a district heating networks to optimally manage heat sources in the production plant to reduce gas consumption and emissions; and Emotion, focusing on a building equipped with photovoltaic panels and electric vehicles and implementing services for optimal vehicle charging to maximize self-consumption, in day-ahead scheduling but also in real time. A discussion finally highlights the challenges and limitations encountered in the deployment of digital twins, emphasizing the importance of user interaction in facilitating efficient energy management. This research contributes in underlining the significant potential of digital twins in advancing the digitalization of the energy sector, contributing to the European Union's goals for sustainability and reduced environmental impact.

Recently, generative AI technologies have emerged as a significant advancement in artificial intelligence field, renowned for their language and image generation capabilities. Meantime, space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN) is an integral part of future B5G/6G for achieving ubiquitous connectivity. Inspired by this, this article explores an integration of generative AI in SAGIN, focusing on potential applications and case study. We first provide a comprehensive review of SAGIN and generative AI models, highlighting their capabilities and opportunities of their integration. Benefiting from generative AI’s ability to generate useful data and facilitate advanced decision-making processes, it can be applied to various scenarios of SAGIN. Accordingly, we present a brief survey on their integration, including channel modeling and channel state information (CSI) estimation, joint air-space-ground resource allocation, intelligent network deployment, semantic communications, image extraction and processing, security and privacy enhancement. Next, we propose a framework that utilizes a generative diffusion model (GDM) to construct channel information map to enhance quality of service for SAGIN. Chaos-based random bit generators are abundantly used in chaos-based encryption and security applications, as a fast, deterministic source of randomness, to perform actions like permutation and substitution. The chaotic map used as a source of randomness though may heavily affect the bit generator’s statistical randomness, key space, and speed. Thus, any given bit generator may not be equally efficient for all the chaotic maps used as a seed. Motivated by this, the present work considers a bit generator that utilizes a common modulo-based hashing technique, and studies its performance under a plethora of different chaotic maps. For each map, the generator is evaluated with respect to randomness, key space, and operations per bit ratio. This analysis can serve as a guideline for random bit generator usage in future chaos-based encryption designs.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies represent an important advancement in the field of AI, particularly for their capabilities in text and image generation. Over-the-air wireless federated learning (OA-WFL) can utilize the wireless waveform superposition property to achieve efficient model aggregation, thereby providing support for GenAI training and deployment. Therefore, this article investigates the support of OA-WFL for GenAI, focusing on potential applications and specific examples. We first discuss the OA-WFL and GenAI models, emphasizing their functionalities and the potential benefits arising from their interaction. We then explore its application in various GenAI scenarios, including large-scale edge device content generation, efficient distributed training of GenAI models, and reduction of bandwidth requirements and device load. Next, a framework is proposed to apply OA-WFL to diffusion models, such as those used in image generation, and validate its effectiveness through simulation results. Finally, we discuss prospective research directions for the application of OA-WFL for GenAI. © 2025 IEEE.

Visual inspection of dual-energy X-ray radiographic images of cabin baggage requires high performance, but is hindered by various challenges such as low target prevalence, variability in target visibility, possible presence of multiple targets, and security personnel fatigue and inattention. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, particularly deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have shown promise in improving the automatic detection of explosives, even with low-resolution radiographic images, especially in high baggage throughput scenarios. In this paper, we focus on the detection of detonators as components of improvised explosive devices. The proposed approach involves comparing two experiments implemented in a deep CNN architecture using TensorFlow and Keras libraries. In the first experiment, raw dual-energy radiographic images without any enhancement were used. The second experiment includes three methods for contrast enhancement and feature extraction: the Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) method, the wavelet transform-based method, and the mixed CLAHE RGB-Wavelet method. In the latter two methods, Haar, Db2, Coif2, and Sym2 mother wavelet functions at two levels (HH and HL) were employed. The analysis of results focuses on a comparative study of performance measures such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. It was found that the preprocessing methods used in experiment 2, for the two evaluated classes (detonator and no detonator), achieved higher accuracy compared to the raw radiographic images used in experiment 1 (98.08%). The highest accuracies in experiment 2, with a value of 100%, were obtained with the CLAHE method (green channel in grayscale, blue channel in grayscale, and RGB channels) and the wavelet transform method with Haar mother wavelet at two levels HL
