Innovative grid technology leverages Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance energy efficiency and mitigate losses. This paper introduces a 'novel three-tier hierarchical framework for smart homes within the Internet of Things (IoT)' ecosystem, addressing the current shortage of intelligent solutions that underutilize IoT advantages. Our framework's primary objective is to elevate smart homes to the microgrid level, enabling the seamless integration from the microgrid's renewable distributed energy sources and attaining maximum energy efficiency. In addition to traditional data processing, we propose the application of fog computing in smart homes. Through a rigorous simulation using real smart meter datasets, our study demonstrates that fog computing, mainly when using predictive filtering, may drastically cut down on the amount of data being sent and the load on the home's network. This innovation holds immense potential for revolutionizing energy management and resource allocation in the context of smart homes, thus contributing to a sustainable and efficient future. This research represents a critical step towards harnessing the power of IoT and fog computing in smart grids and homes, offering a promising path towards more intelligent, eco-friendly, and energy-efficient living spaces. © 2024 IEEE.

Prediabetes detection in unconstrained conditions using wearable sensors

Prediabetes is a common health condition that often goes undetected until it progresses to type 2 diabetes. Early identification of prediabetes is essential for timely intervention and prevention of complications. This research explores the feasibility of using wearable continuous glucose monitoring along with smartwatches with embedded inertial sensors to collect glucose measurements and acceleration signals respectively, for the early detection of prediabetes. We propose a methodology based on signal processing and machine learning techniques. Two feature sets are extracted from the collected signals, based both on a dynamic modeling of the human glucose-homeostasis system and on the Glucose curve, inspired by three major glucose related blood tests. Features are aggregated per individual using bootstrap. Support Vector Machines are used to classify normoglycemic vs. prediabetic individuals. We collected data from 22 participants for evaluation. The results are highly encouraging, demonstrating high sensitivity and precision. This work is a proof of concept, highlighting the potential of wearable devices in prediabetes assessment. Future directions involve expanding the study to a larger, more diverse population and exploring the integration of CGM and smartwatch functionalities into a unified device. Automated eating detecting algorithms can also be used. © 2024 The Authors

This paper investigates the interaction of non-expert stakeholders with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the energy urban domain, using the VIRTSI model and focusing on the capabilities of ChatGPT. VIRTSI (Variability and Impact of Reciprocal Trust States towards Intelligent systems), is a rigorous computational model for human-AI Interaction that simulates human trust states, spanning from overtrust to distrust, through user modelling and quantifies the efficiency of the interaction in VIRTSI-adapted confusion matrices. The research employed an 16-question survey, evaluating the accuracy and usefulness of ChatGPT's responses regarding energy consumption, cost-effective solutions, and renewable energy production for residential buildings in Greece. Each answer was assessed by human stakeholders who were non-expert in the energy Urban Domain (e.g house owners, building managers, etc.), who either accepted or rejected the responses based on validation processes. The analysis highlighted key aspects such as repetition, specification, and objections in the interaction with ChatGPT, offering insights into the effectiveness of AI in supporting energy-related decisions. The findings reveal that while AI can provide valuable information, user validation and expert consultation are critical for practical implementation. This highlights both the potential and limitations of integrating AI tools like ChatGPT in enhancing non-expert stakeholder engagement and decision-making in urban energy management, emphasizing the ongoing need for human expert involvement. © 2024 IEEE.

An Efficient Test Scheduling Method Based on Dynamic Pairing

Test scheduling is a process that manages tests within a System-on-Chip (SoC) to minimize test time by allocating test resources and adjusting priorities. Efficient test scheduling offers cost saving opportunities by reducing test time without compromising test coverage. Since test scheduling is a NP-hard problem, conventional methods adopt optimization or heuristic algorithms that leverage metrics of each test. However, due to the interdependence of tests based on how limited resources are allocated, finding the optimal solution to minimize test time is challenging. In this paper, a dynamic pairing algorithm is proposed to consider the mutual influence of tests on each other in the test scheduling process. The proposed method identifies the available test resources for a specific pair and minimizes the test time of the paired modules under identified constraints. Additionally, the proposed algorithm employs a heuristic-based approach to test scheduling to reduce the CPU time needed for scheduling. The proposed heuristic algorithm sequentially schedules test target modules and determines the optimal test schedule through dynamic pairing. Experiments have been carried out on diverse benchmarks and under various constraint conditions. The results indicate that the proposed method achieves shorter test times on average in comparison to conventional methods. © 2025 IEEE. All rights reserved.

Water Trees in Solid Insulating Materials

The process of degradation in cable insulation is a major problem in cable engineering. This happens because high and medium voltage cables are often exposed to water and moisture. The consequence of water on the cable insulation system results in changes in properties and treeing. This paper studies the phenomenon of water trees in solid cable insulation and how their presence affects an installation which is powered by degraded cable via Simulink software. Alternating electric field and humidity are the main factors which lead to appearance of water trees and their effect is studied. In addition, two basic methods are analyzed which are used in the detection of water trees, namely the method of dissipation factor tanδ measurement, for which universal acceptable criteria have been established in the detection of water trees, and the method of DC leakage current measurement, for which some service providers have established criteria for assessing the condition of cables and have been universally accepted. The largest part of this paper shows the simulations which were performed in a single-phase system and a three-phase system using SIMULINK software which aims to study the differences in the behavior of a system with healthy cables and a system with degraded cables in the event of a fault, such as short circuit, lightning overvoltage, and in the event of interruption of the load supply from the network. © 2021 School of Science, IHU. To support increasing demands for real-time multimedia wireless data traffic, there have been considerable efforts toward guaranteeing stringent quality-of-service (QoS) when designing massive multiple-input and multiple-output (m-MIMO) mobile wireless network architectures for massive ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (mURLLC). One of the major design issues raised by mURLLC is how to characterize QoS metrics for upper-bounding both delay and error-rate when implementing short-packet data communications, such as finite blocklength coding (FBC), over highly time-varying m-MIMO based wireless fading channels. To efficiently accommodate statistical QoS for mURLLC traffic, it is crucial to model and investigate m-MIMO based wireless fading channels’ stochastic-characteristics by defining and identifying new statistical QoS metrics and their analytical relationships, such as delay-bound-violating probability, effective capacity, decoding error probability, etc., in the finite blocklength regime. However, how to rigorously and efficiently characterize the stochastic dynamics of m-MIMO mobile wireless networks in terms of statistically upper-bounding FBC-based both delay and error-rate QoS metrics has been neither fundamentally understood nor thoroughly studied before. To overcome these challenges, in this paper we develop analytical modeling techniques and frameworks for statistical delay and error-rate bounded QoS in the finite blocklength regime. First, we establish system models using FBC. Second, we develop a set of new statistical delay and error-rate bounded QoS metrics including delay, error-rate, and joint-delay/error-rate QoS-exponents, and the corresponding ϵ-effective capacities. Finally, our simulations validate and evaluate our developed modeling schemes for statistical QoS to support 6G mURLLC.

The sixth generation (6G) mobile wireless networks are expected to provide massive ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (mURLLC) for data services, which require extremely stringent quality-of-services (QoS) with massive connectivity. Rate splitting (RS) multiple access schemes have been proposed recently for tackling the difficulty of the massive access yielded by a large number of mobile users (MUs) requesting to connect to a single base station. Massive multiple-input and multiple-output (massive-MIMO) communication is considered a promising solution to serve massive MUs in 6G wireless networks. However, how to apply RS schemes into massive-MIMO techniques to support the massive access has not been sufficiently studied. In this paper, we propose to integrate RS schemes with massive-MIMO techniques to achieve mURLLC transmissions under a Nakagamir $m$ fading wireless channel. First, we establish the system model for the integrated RS and massive-MIMO schemes. Then, we derive closed-form expressions for the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) under a Nakagami- $-m$ fading channel and obtain the channel capacity. Finally, we use numerical analyses to validate and evaluate our proposed RS and massive-MIMO integrated schemes.

Significant effort has been devoted to the problem of guaranteeing stringent ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) while introducing new requirements for better quality-of-services (QoS) over next generation wireless networks. One of the major design issues raised by URLLC is how to support explosively growing demands for delay-sensitive multimedia applications while guaranteeing ultra-reliability. Towards this end, there have been a wide spectrum of promising techniques, including statistical delay and error rate-bounded QoS provisioning, cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input-multiple-output (m-MIMO), finite blocklength coding (FBC), hybrid automatic repeat request with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR) protocol, etc. However, when being integrated with FBC, how to rigorously and efficiently characterize the dynamics of mobile wireless networks in terms of statistical delay and error-rate bounded QoS provisioning for CF m-MIMO has imposed many new challenges not encountered before. To overcome these challenges, in this paper we develop statistical delay and error-rate bounded QoS analytical modeling schemes to characterize the FBC-based $\epsilon$ -effective capacity over 6G CF m-MIMO wireless networks using HARQ-IR. In particular, first we establish CF m-MIMO based system architecture models. Second, we apply a HARQ-IR protocol for deriving the channel coding rate, outage probability, and FBC based $\epsilon$ -effective capacity function using the Mellin transform. Finally, we conduct a set of simulations to validate and evaluate our proposed schemes.

Wind Power Prediction Based on Multi-class Autoregressive Moving Average Model with Logistic Function

The seasonality and randomness of wind present a significant challenge to the operation of modern power systems with high penetration of wind generation. An effective shortterm wind power prediction model is indispensable to address this challenge. In this paper, we propose a combined model, i.e.,a wind power prediction model based on multi-class autoregressive moving average(ARMA). It has a two-layer structure: the first layer classifies the wind power data into multiple classes with the logistic function based classification method;the second layer trains the prediction algorithm in each class. This two-layer structure helps effectively tackle the seasonality and randomness of wind power while at the same time maintaining high training efficiency with moderate model parameters. We interpret the training of the proposed model as a solvable optimization problem. We then adopt an iterative algorithm with a semi-closed-form solution to efficiently solve it. Data samples from open-source projects demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model. Through a series of comparisons with other state-of-the-art models, the experimental results confirm that the proposed model improves not only the prediction accuracy,but also the parameter estimation efficiency.

An Efficient Symbol Timing Scheme for OFDM systems Using Optimal Correlation-Based Circular-Shifted Preamble

We propose a coarse symbol timing scheme for wireless orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems using an optimal correlation-based circular-shifted preamble (CSP). Our proposed scheme is implemented by off-line correlation-ranking and on-line processing. The on-line processing derives an optimal CSP for transmission according to the off-line correlation-ranking, and employs a delayed multiplication operation for symbol timing. The conducted simulation results show that our proposed scheme outperforms the other existing representative schemes over typical multi-path fading channels in terms of mean square error (MSE) while keeping the computational complexity low.
