To realize net zero emissions in aviation sector, all electric aircraft (AEA) are an optimistic technology. To make commercial wide body AEA a reality, one of the main challenges is to design their electric power system (EPS) having high power density and the lowest possible system mass. The power needed and pressure level during take-off and cruising time create opposing conditions, so designing one cable that meets all the requirements is crucial. In low-pressure conditions at cruising altitude (12.2 km), cable design faces significant thermal challenges because of limited heat transfer. A comprehensive multiphysics model is necessary to compute the distribution of temperature across the cable under various environmental conditions to find the optimal cable configuration. This study focuses on a cylindrical bipolar 5 kV DC cable system in a duct with multilayer insulation at atmospheric and low (18.8k Pa) pressure based on the maximum current that flows in the introduced EPS of N3-X (NASA) AEA system under the worst-case of single contingency conditions so that the designed cable can handle any single contingency situations maintaining thermal limits.

Learning-Based Joint Beamforming and Antenna Movement Design for Movable Antenna systems

In this paper, we investigate a multi-receiver communication system enabled by movable antennas (MAs). Specifically, the transmit beamforming and the double-side (DS) antenna movement at the transceiver are jointly designed to maximize the sum-rate of all receivers under imperfect channel state information (CSI). Since the formulated problem is non-convex with highly coupled variables, conventional optimization methods cannot solve it efficiently. To address these challenges, an effective learning-based algorithm is proposed, namely heterogeneous multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG), which incorporates two agents to learn policies for beamforming and movement of MAs, respectively. Based on the offline learning under numerous imperfect CSI, the proposed heterogeneous MADDPG can output the solutions for transmit beamforming and antenna movement in real time. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, and the MA can significantly improve the sum-rate performance of multiple receivers compared to other benchmark schemes. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

Group scheduling problems have attracted much attention owing to their many practical *** work proposes a new bi-objective serial-batch group scheduling problem considering the constraints of sequence-dependent setup time,release time,and due *** is originated from an important industrial process,i.e.,wire rod and bar rolling process in steel production *** objective functions,i.e.,the number of late jobs and total setup time,are minimized.A mixed integer linear program is established to describe the *** obtain its Pareto solutions,we present a memetic algorithm that integrates a population-based nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II and two single-solution-based improvement methods,i.e.,an insertion-based local search and an iterated greedy *** computational results on extensive industrial data with the scale of a one-week schedule show that the proposed algorithm has great performance in solving the concerned problem and outperforms its *** high accuracy and efficiency imply its great potential to be applied to solve industrial-size group scheduling problems.

Audio deepfake detection is an emerging topic in the artificial intelligence community. The second Audio Deepfake Detection Challenge (ADD 2023) aims to spur researchers around the world to build new innovative technologies that can further accelerate and foster research on detecting and analyzing deepfake speech utterances. Different from previous challenges (e.g. ADD 2022), ADD 2023 focuses on surpassing the constraints of binary real/fake classification, and actually localizing the manipulated intervals in a partially fake speech as well as pinpointing the source responsible for generating any fake audio. Furthermore, ADD 2023 includes more rounds of evaluation for the fake audio game sub-challenge. The ADD 2023 challenge includes three subchallenges: audio fake game (FG), manipulation region location (RL) and deepfake algorithm recognition (AR). This paper describes the datasets, evaluation metrics, and protocols. Some findings are also reported in audio deepfake detection tasks. © 2023 CEUR-WS. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we propose an information geometry approach (IGA) for signal detection in ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We formulate the signal detection as obtaining the marginals of the a posteriori probability distribution of the transmitted symbol vector. Then, a maximization of the a posteriori marginals (MPM) for signal detection can be performed. With the information geometry theory, we calculate the approximations of the a posteriori marginals. It is formulated as an iterative m-projection process. We then apply the central-limit-theorem (CLT) to simplify the calculation of the m-projection since the direct calculation of the m-projection is of exponential-complexity. With the CLT, we obtain an approximate solution of the m-projection, which is asymptotically accurate. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed IGA is a promising and efficient method to implement the signal detector in ultra-massive MIMO systems. © 2023 IEEE.

We present a tunable repetition rate frequency comb realized by cascaded electro-optical modulators with a high nonlinear AlGaAs-on-isolator waveguide. 18-26.5 GHz comb spacing tunability with broadband spectra was achieved. All the devices can be integrated onto a single chip, which makes this work useful for many applications. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

The electrooculogram (EOG) represents the electrical activity of the eye. Since most EOG-based applications need a large amount of data to be stored and transmitted, compression is required. A study on the use of discrete wavelet packet decomposition (DWPD) for compressing EOG signals is presented in this paper. The EOG signals are recorded using a commercial bioamplifier. The compression algorithm is implemented using the MATLAB software. The performance of the compression was evaluated using three parameters: compression ratio (CR), energy retention, and percent root-mean-square difference (PRD). The experimental results show that the DWPD allows for CRs of 82% while retaining almost 100% of the signal energy with a PRD of only 7%.

In the evolving landscape of cloud computing, federated cloud infrastructures present unique challenges and opportunities for resource and application monitoring. Monitoring the diverse array of cloud resources and applications within a federated cloud environment is crucial for delivering consistent Quality of Service (QoS) and continuous oversight across various cloud applications and infrastructure. Despite the various successes documented in the literature on multi-cloud monitoring, existing frameworks have not fully explored or provided enough insights into centralized monitoring of resources, applications, and network devices in a federated cloud environment. This paper introduces FedMonitor, an implementation architecture designed to enhance the monitoring and notification capabilities in federated cloud environments by building on the theoretical ideals in our earlier work (i.e. FEDARGOS-V1). FedMonitor leverages Prometheus and Grafana to crawl, manage and visualize metrics from diverse software services, hardware resources, and network devices within a federated cloud environment. The results demonstrate hat FedMonitor improves the effectiveness of resource and application monitoring in federated cloud environments. © 2024 IEEE.

In transiting from one civilization to another, technology has played a vital and positive role. In the 21st century, one of the digital developments that is paving ways for human life improvement is machine-assisted technology using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Artificial Intelligence has successfully enhanced man's capacity in solving complex problems and processes. However, as developed nations continue to reap from the adoption of AI in various fields of human endeavors, the continent of Africa has remained behind, especially in AI-based skills and research. Various governments in developing nations have encouraged the adoption of AI, especially in institutions of learning. However, theoretical adoption without practical experience has remained an ineffective way of bridging the digital divide. In this paper we present the outcome of a practical approach to bridging the AI divide among students and researchers in Africa through funding support from the Google TensorFlow College Outreach Award. A 3-day hybrid bootcamp was organized (11th to 13th December, 2023) using the Google funding in order to equip postgraduate students and researchers with AI and collaborative research skills. A pre-survey method was employed to ascertain the knowledge level of the bootcamp participants. From the pre-surveyed feedback, training sessions on various AI domains were presented, and participant equipped with practical AI skills using a deployed AI-based cloud programming platform running on the private Federated Genomic Cloud (FEDGEN) infrastructure at Covenant University. A post-survey feedback was used to ascertain the effectiveness of this approach. A comparative analysis of the pre-survey and post-survey reveals a 70% improvement of AI skills among participants. This shows that having continuous training session for students and researchers is an effective method in closing the AI skills gap between developed and developing nations. © 2024 IEEE.
