The integration of multiple predictors promises higher prediction accuracy than the accuracy that can be obtained with a single predictor. The challenge is how to select the best predictor at any given moment. Traditionally, multiple predictors are run in parallel and the one that generates the best result is selected for prediction. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for predictor integration based on the learning of historical predictions. It uses classification algorithms such as k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) based supervised learning to forecast the best predictor for the workload under study. Then only the forecasted best predictor is run for prediction. Our experimental results show that it achieved 20.18% higher best predictor forecasting accuracy than the cumulative MSB based predictor selection approach used in the popular network weather service system. In addition, it outperformed the observed most accurate single predictor in the pool for 44.23% of the performance traces.

We develop a novel approach to approximate a specified collection of marginal distributions on subsets of variables by a globally consistent distribution on the entire collection of variables. In general, the specified marginal distributions may be inconsistent on overlapping subsets of variables. Our method is based on maximizing entropy over an exponential family of graphical models, subject to divergence constraints on small subsets of variables that enforce closeness to the specified marginals. The resulting optimization problem is convex, and can be solved efficiently using a primal-dual interior-point algorithm. Moreover, this framework leads naturally to a solution that is a sparse graphical model.

In this paper, we propose micro-climate sensing as an effective means of enhancing conventional RF-based localization. Our system targets people-tracking applications in dynamic indoor environments, such as nursing homes, hospitals and office spaces that require simple deployment and where conventional RF-based tracking using signal strengths alone is very likely to suffer from time-varying signal attenuation and inevitable changes in the environment over time such as new furniture arrangements, people traffic, changing obstacle patterns etc. To help mitigate these effects, we use time-synchronized windows of sensor samples to dynamically associate a mobile node with its nearest beacon nodes. Comparisons and matches are always relative to the ambient attributes at the time of localization, and hence our technique automatically evolves with environmental changes. We consider this property of localization techniques to be a significant contribution and a necessary requirement for any long- lived localization system. In assisted-living environments, sensor networks likely already have basic sensors to collect contextual information about users and to monitor the environment. We propose using light, humidity, temperature and audio data samples over a short window of time to model the micro-climate of a beacon node. Using microclimate matching in conjunction with RF signal strength decreases the worst-case localization error significantly by a factor of more than 3 (from 25 m to 8 m) while making the system more resilient to environment changes. Microclimate data helps ensure at least room level location tracking even in buildings like hospitals with many rooms in close proximity.

Most of the applications envisioned for micro air vehicles require an on-board E(MR camera. It is only natural to investigate using the on-board camera as a sensor for navigation, guidance, and control. This paper investigates the use of an EO/IR sensor as a seeker in a proportional navigation guidance law for micro air vehicles. Proportional navigation strategies require knowledge of the line-of-site rates and range rate between the vehicle and the target. This paper demonstrates how these quantities can be derived from pixel-specific information provided by an EO/IR sensor. The guidance laws are developed for gimbaled and strapdown sensors on both skid-to-turn and bank-to-turn MAV kinematic models.

A new approach to identify the nonlinear model of an induction machine using two generalized neurons (GNs) is presented in this paper. Compared to the multilayer perceptron feedforward neural network, a GN has simpler structure and lesser requirement in terms of memory storage which is makes it attractive for hardware implementation. This method shows that with less number of weights, GN is able to learn the dynamics of an induction machine. The proposed model is made by two coupled networks. A modified particle swarm optimization algorithm is designed to solve this distinctive GN training problem. A pseudo-random binary sequence signal injected to the induction machine operating at its rated value was chosen as the test input signal. For validation, the trained GN model is applied on the different operating conditions of the system.

This paper presents a new adaptive nonlinear control approach for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives, without requiring speed sensors. The proposed approach is based on state-dependent Riccati equation (SDRE) control technique and its real-time computation method by gradient-type neural networks, that allows one to control PMSM online. For this purpose, the unknown parameters of the PMSM drive; stator resistance, load torque, and motor speed, are also estimated using an extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm. The resulted adaptive algorithm is independent from any initial conditions, relatively fast to achieve nonlinear system speed tracking control, numerically not complex, and easily applicable to real-time control of PMSM drives. This new adaptive approach for sensorless control of PMSM drives is demonstrated through an illustrative simulation for the proof of concept.

We demonstrate the feasibility of radio-frequency (RF) communication based wireless load-sharing control of a two-module parallel dc-dc (Weinberg) converter unit (DDCU) operating at a high switching frequency (0.25 MHz). The impact of time delay (due to varying network sampling rates and channel disruptions) on the stability and performance of the DDCU are analyzed leading to robust control design, which compensates for the time-varying delays. Additionally, using experimental results, we demonstrate that an all-SiC (SiC VJFET and SiC Schottky diode) based hard-switched power-stage design achieves high efficiency in spite of operating at high frequency and high temperature.

This paper presents a novel nonlinear quadratic optimal control technique for multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) cascaded multilevel static compensators (STATCOM), based on state-dependent Riccati equation (SDRE) technique. The proposed approach is applied online, using a gradient-type neural network algorithm for the computation of SDRE based nonlinear control. The algorithm is fast, computationally simple, and independent of initial conditions. This new control strategy is applied, in a detailed simulation, to the average d-q model of STATCOM to track a desired DC voltage and a reactive current, that demonstrates a relatively fast control ability and good dynamic performance.

There are many situations in which GPS is either unable to provide the desired level of accuracy or is unavailable, particular in urban or indoor environments. One alternative to GPS is to navigate using signals of opportunity (SoOP)-signals that are intended for purposes other than navigation. This paper describes the benefits and drawbacks of navigation using SoOP and identifies typical SoOP system configurations. Three different types of SoOP measurements are described, including ranging through signal strength, angle of arrival, and time-difference of arrival (TDOA) measurements. Positioning algorithms, ambiguity resolution issues, and measurement quality and geometry are also addressed.

The development of single-phase power factor correction (PFC) technologies was traditionally driven by the need for computers, telecommunication, lighting, and other electronic devices and systems to meet harmonic current limits defined by IEC 61000-3-2 and other regulatory standards. Recently, several new applications have emerged as additional drivers for the development of the technologies. One such application is commercial transport airplanes where single-phase PFC converters capable of meeting stringent airborne power quality requirements are required for in-flight entertainment (IFE), avionics, communication, and other single-phase loads. The proliferation of variable-speed motor drives in home appliances has also generated a new need for high-power (up to a few kilowatts), high-efficiency, and low-cost single-phase PFC converters. New PFC circuits, control methods, as well as EMI modeling and design techniques are being developed in response to these new requirements, which are reviewed in this paper. Specific subjects to be covered include airborne and home appliance applications, as well as EMI modeling and EMI filter design optimization.
