In electrical power systems, asset management procedures have developed into a central element of network operations and planning. Hidden Markov Models (HMM) can be used to transform various data collected from substation equipment into failure probabilities. Based on these failure probabilities a mathematical decision tool can be created which could be used in system-level simulation and experimentation. In particular, collected data utilizing the dissolved gas analysis-in-oil (DGA) field methodology for transformers are analyzed with HMM for the prediction of their deterioration level.

Users are informed using a rule enabled engine whenever certain conditions demanding attention occur, through an SMS messaging system. Researchers have recently shown that the dirty-paper coding (DPC) is the optimal transmission strategy for multiple-input multiple-output Gaussian broadcast channels (MIMO BC). Moreover, by the channel duality, the nonconvex MIMO BC sum rate problem can be transformed to the convex dual MIMO multiple-access channel (MIMO MAC) problem with a sum power constraint. In this paper, we design an efficient algorithm based on conjugate gradient projection (CGP) to solve the MIMO BC maximum sum rate problem. Our proposed CGP algorithm solves the dual sum power MAC problem by utilizing the powerful concept of Hessian conjugate. We also develop a rigorous algorithm to solve the projection problem. We show that CGP enjoys provable convergence, scalability, and efficiency for large MIMO BC systems.

A wind farm typically consists of a large number of individual wind turbine generators (WTGs) connected by an internal electrical network. To study the impact of wind farms on the dynamics of the power system, an important issue is to develop appropriate wind farm models to represent the dynamics of many individual WTGs. This paper presents various dynamic models, including a detailed model and three reduced-order equivalent models, of wind farms with fixed-speed WTGs. These models are developed and compared by simulation studies in the PSCAD/EMTDC environment under different wind velocity and fluctuation conditions as well as gird fault conditions. Concluding remarks are provided on how to choose an appropriate wind farm model for power system dynamic and transient studies.

Recent work has formulated 2- and 3-dimensional models and steering control laws for motion camouflage, a stealthy pursuit strategy observed in nature. Here we extend the model to encompass the use of a high-gain pursuit law in the presence of sensor noise as well as in the case when the evader's steering is driven by a stochastic process, demonstrating (in the planar setting) that motion camouflage is still accessible (in the mean) in finite time. We also discuss a family of admissible stochastic evader controls, laying out the groundwork for a future game-theoretic study of optimal evasion strategies.

This paper is concerned with computational methods for Lyapunov-based control design of an attractor set of a nonlinear dynamical system. Based upon a stochastic representation of deterministic dynamics, a Lyapunov measure is used for these purposes. This paper poses and solves the co-design problem of jointly obtaining the control Lyapunov measure and a controller. The computational framework is based upon a set-oriented numerical approach. Using this approach, the co-design problem leads to a finite number of linear inequalities whose solutions define the feasible set of stabilizing controllers. We provide a proof of existence for a stochastic version of such a controller while the deterministic restriction is posed as the solution of a related integer programming problem. Mathematical programming techniques may be employed to obtain such controllers. Finally, an example is provided to illustrate the ideas.

We study plasma effects in a micromachined high-electron mobility transistor (HEMT) with the microcantilever (MC) serving as the gate using the developed model. The model accounts for mechanical motion of the MC and spatio-temporal variations (plasma effects) of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) system in the transistor channel. The MC mechanical motion is described in the point-mass approximation. The hydrodynamic electron transport model is used to describe distributed electron plasma phenomena in the 2DEG system. Using the developed model, we calculated the response function characterizing the amplitude microcantilever oscillations and the output electric signal as functions of the signal frequency and the bias voltage for the devices with different parameters. We find the voltage dependences of the frequency of the mechanical resonance and its damping. In particular, it is demonstrated that the amplitudes of the mechanical oscillations and output electric signal exhibit pronounced maxima at the bias voltages close to the voltage of the 2DEG channel depletion followed by a steep drop with further increase in the bias voltage. We also consider a concept of a resonant detector of modulated terahertz radiation based on a micromachined HEMT. This device can exhibit both the plasma (in terahertz range) and mechanical (in megahertz or gigahertz range) resonances.

Semantic annotation and querying is currently applied on a number of versatile disciplines, providing the added-value of such an approach and, consequently the need for more elaborate - either case-specific or generic - tools. In this context, we have developed Eikonomia: an integrated semantically-aware tool for the description and retrieval of Byzantine artwork Information. Following the needs of the ORMYLIA Art Diagnosis Center for adding semantics to their legacy data, an ontology describing Byzantine artwork based on CIDOC-CRM, along with the interfaces for synchronization to and from the existing RDBMS have been implemented. This ontology has been linked to a reasoning tool, while a dynamic interface for the automated creation of semantic queries in SPARQL was developed. Finally, all the appropriate interfaces were instantiated, in order to allow easy ontology manipulation, query results projection and restrictions creation.

The first silicon air-driven rotary actuation mechanism based on encapsulated ball bearings is reported. The method of integrating a silicon air turbine with a ball bearing support mechanism has been developed for silicon turbomachinery and tribological investigations. Rotational speeds up to 37,000 rpm and continuous operation longer than 24 hours were measured. Qualitative analysis is also presented, shedding light on silicon/ball wear and methods for increasing bearing lifetime and speeds.
