Three integration schemes, namely, coherent, noncoherent, and semi-coherent integration, and their variants are described in this paper for signal detection and tracking in such applications as pulsed Doppler radar and GPS receiver. We adopt a unified approach to present such integration schemes as best approximations to the likelihood ratio test (LRT) when the signal models are partially known to different extents. Formulas for the conditional probability density functions (pdfs) of the sufficient statistic under alternative hypotheses as well as the probability of detection (Pd) and probability of false alarm (Pfa) are given. Integration improvement factors and integration losses are then formulated. Connections of the semi-coherent integration scheme to the cyclic autocorrelation function, the discrete-time Wigner-Ville transform, and the radar ambiguity function are also outlined. Although most of the results are available in the literature, they are scattered in different textbooks and research papers. By presenting them in a cohesive and concise manner, the paper can serve as (1) an introductory material with key references for those who would like to study the subject further, (2) a quick reference for those who would like to compare these integration schemes, and (3) an integrated approach under varying conditions. Simulation results are presented to compare these integration schemes in terms of detection performance (P d and Pfa) as a function of signal to noise ratio (SNR) and integration interval under two operating conditions. One is for a signal with constant Doppler frequency and the other is for a linear frequency modulation signal (i.e., a chirp signal). We show the curves of the input SNR required under different chirp rates so as to maintain the same detection performance, the resulting LRTs for the different approaches, as well as simulated comparisons between trade-offs of Pd versus SNR.

This paper focuses attention on the concept of flatness-based feedback linearization and its practical application to the design of an optimal transient controller for a synchronous machine. The feedback linearization scheme of interest requires the generation of a flat output from which the feedback control law can easily be designed. Thus the computation of the flat output for reduced order model of the synchronous machine with simplified turbine dynamics is hereby presented. The corresponding linearized compensator is derived as well as the nonlinear controller for transient stabilization of a synchronous machine subjected to large disturbances. The transient behavior of a single machine equipped with the so designed nonlinear controllers feeding an infinite bus is illustrated via simulation in Matlab environment. The results obtained for transient disturbances on the single machine infinite bus system (SMIBS) are presented and compared with other control algorithms to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

This paper concerns how to compute discrete real functions using three-layer feedforward neural networks with one hidden layer. Firstly, we define strongly and weakly symmetric real functions. Then we give a network to compute a specific strongly symmetric real function. The number of the hidden neurons is given and the weights of hidden neurons are 1 or -1. Algorithm 1 modifies the weights to real numbers to compute arbitrary strongly symmetric real functions. Theorem 3 extends the results to compute any discrete real functions. Finally, we give an example to indicate our results.

Local atomic arrangement in heterostructures or disorder due to alloying, surface roughness and impurities strongly influence the bandstructure and charge transport. With decreasing diameters down to nanometer scales, disorder can no longer be treated in an average manner using the virtual crystal approximation (VCA) and the need for atomistic simulations arises. This work looks at the nanoscale devices from two different perspectives. The materials science perspective in which average bandstructure of the whole nanowire is computed using the nanoelectronic modeling tool (NEMO‐3D) and the zone‐unfolding algorithm. The device physics perspective, where the transmission coefficient is calculated with an atomistic non‐equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) approach. Both approaches use 20 band sp3d5s* empirical tight‐binding model with spin orbit coupling. The connection between dispersions and transmission coefficients of AlGaAs random alloy nanowires is highlighted. Both, transmission coefficients and average bandstructures show reduced bandgaps and noisy behavior. Their complimentary and mutually supporting nature provides a significant insight into the physics of charge transport through disordered systems.

In this paper we investigate the dynamics of contrast agent concentration as blood flow estimation method utilizing contributions from three different fields: morphologic and dynamic angiographic X-ray scans, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and Laser-Doppler-Velocimetry (LDV) measurements. Based on dynamic angiographic X-ray measurements we exploit dedicated CFD simulations, carried out specifically for each target object, for the adaptation of the plain video densitometric results. Finally, a comparison with LDV is presented.

This paper presents spectral characterization for efficient image detection using hyperspectral processing techniques. We investigate the relationship between the number of used bands and the performance of the detection process in order to find the optimal number of band reductions. The band reduction significantly reduces computation and implementation complexity of the ***, we define and characterize the contribution coefficient for each band. Based on the coefficients, we heuristically select the required minimum bands for the detection process. We have shown that the small number of bands is efficient for effective detection. The proposed algorithm is suitable for low-complexity and real-time applications.

The frequency-domain analysis has been used to calculate the oscillator phase response for the known noise spectrum with the assumed impulse sensitivity function (ISF). This analysis gives new view to the phase noise calculation in the general phase noise theory and fixes a few errors of this theory caused from the time-domain analysis.

This paper presents the analysis of a three-phase Z-source dc-ac converter operating in all the feasible operating modes. The converter has an impedance circuit which connects the power source to the converter main circuit. The Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) algorithm required for this converter is set forth after which the model which is useful for the steady-state and dynamic analyses are illustrated with some simulation results.

In recent years, the amount of Internet accessible digital audiovisual media files has vastly increased. Therefore the need to describe the media (by way of metadata) has also increased significantly. MPEG-7 (finalized in 2001) provides a comprehensive and rich metadata standard for the description of multimedia content. Unfortunately, a standardized query format does not exist for MPEG-7, or other multimedia metadata. Such a standard would provide for communications between querying clients and databases, supporting cross-modal and cross-media retrieval. The lSO/lEC SC29WG11 committee decided therefore to contribute to this application space by adding such functionality as a new part of the MPEG-7 series of standards. In response to a Call for Proposals, six proposals were submitted. This paper describes the strengths of each proposal as well as the resulting draft standard for the MPEG-7 query format.
