The systolic processing offers the possibility of solving a large number of standard problems on multicellular computing devices with autonomous cells (processing elements - PEs). The resulting systolic arrays exploit the underlying parallelism of many computationally intensive problems and offer a vital and effective way of handling them. Advances in technology and especially in VLSI and FPGA have an ongoing contribution to the evolution of systolic and wavefront arrays. The concept of wavefront arrays differentiates from that of the systolic arrays in the following: the wavefront arrays consist of PEs with varying computation time allowed and the overall control is achieved by handshaking signals amongst the cells (instead of a common clock). Herein, a FPGA-based de(double ended) wavefront array prototype implementing the factorization stage of the quadrant interlocking factorization - QIF (Butterfly) method is presented and the corresponding time-complexities achieved are discussed

As the increasing of system performance and computing power, embedded systems are more complicated and interactive. Therefore, operating system (OS) plays a more important role in embedded systems to utilize various hardware and software resources. However, no OS can meet all requirements of various embedded systems. Due to the advance of reconfigurable processors, system requirements can be more dynamic. Embedded OS has becoming more critical in the development of embedded systems and thus there is a strong need of configurable embedded OS to better and faster build up the target system. In this paper, we propose a configurable OS, called COS, based on SOA (service-oriented architecture) for embedded SoC (system on a chip) systems to build an application specific OS according to the system requirements. COS can be easily configured to better utilize the resources of the target embedded platform and have better support to the embedded application. Moreover, the COS can easily extend new features or functionalities of other OSes and even be adapted to the designs of other OSes. We implement COS on an ARM platform to prove its configurability and also evaluate its overhead. We believe that COS can be configured to meet the various requirements in embedded SoC systems and help to speed up the embedded system development process

This paper presents the development of the FE-based physical phase variable models for electric machines. Our results show that the developed FE-based phase variable models provide the same accuracy as the full FE model but with much faster simulation speed. These models are necessary for the study of new control strategies to facilitate dynamic simulation in an industrial environment. The FE-based phase variable model is developed with the lumped circuit parameters obtained from FE solutions covering a complete steady state ac cycle. These parameters are described by tables and utilized through table lookup procedure during the simulation. These models take into consideration the effects of nonlinear magnetization and geometry variation, winding arrangements and rotation. In the case of iron core transformers, the model takes into account the inductance variations with the flux amplitude as well as its phase angle during a complete ac cycle. The FE-based phase variable model for various types of machines were studied, including pm synchronous machine, brushless dc motor, induction machine, and transformers

Concurrent testing of the cores in a modular core-based system-on-chip reduces the test application time but increases the test power consumption. Power models and scheduling algorithms have been proposed to schedule the tests as concurrently as possible while respecting the power budget. The commonly used global peak power model, with a single value capturing the power dissipated by a core when tested, is pessimistic but simple for a scheduling algorithm to handle. In this paper, we propose a cycle-accurate power model with a power value per clock cycle and a corresponding scheduling algorithm. The model takes into account the switching activity in the scan chains caused by both the test stimuli and the test responses during scan-in, launch-and-capture and scan-out. Further, we allow a unique power model per wrapper chain configuration as the activity in a core will be different depending on the number of wrapper chains at a core. Extensive experiments on ITC'02 benchmarks and an industrial design show that the testing time can be substantially reduced (on average 16.5% reduction) by using the proposed cycle-accurate test power model

This paper presents a content-based decentralized information aggregation service for pervasive environments. The service provides a uniform query interface where aggregation queries are specified using content descriptors in the form of keywords, partial keywords, wildcards and ranges. The service guarantees that all data that matches a complex/range query was located and aggregated in an efficient and scalable way. The design of the aggregation service uses a decentralized aggregation trie along with a distributed and decentralized query engine. The deployment and experimental evaluation of the aggregation service are also presented. Evaluations include simulations as well as experiments using deployments on local-area network at Rutgers and wide-area PlanetLab testbed

This paper addresses dynamic load balancing algorithms for non-dedicated heterogeneous clusters of workstations. We propose an algorithm called self-adapting scheduling (SAS), targeted at nested loops with dependencies in a stochastic environment. This means that the load entering the system, not belonging to the parallel application under execution, follows an unpredictable pattern which can be modeled by a stochastic process. SAS takes into account the history of previous timing results and the load patterns in order to make accurate load balancing predictions. We study the performance of SAS in comparison with DTSS. We established in previous work that DTSS is the most efficient self-scheduling algorithm for loops with dependencies on heterogeneous clusters. We test our algorithm under the assumption that the interarrival times and life-times of incoming jobs are exponentially distributed. The experimental results show that SAS significantly outperforms DTSS especially with rapidly varying loads

This paper proposes a combined voltage profile improvement and line loss reduction index (VILRI) to assess the impact of distributed generation (DG) on a distribution system. An efficiency optimization method for vector-controlled surface permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) drives including online estimation of all parameters is presented. The controllable electrical loss can be minimized by the optimal control of the armature current vector. Parameter variations except at near the nominal conditions have undesirable effect on the controller performance, so it is essential to estimate motor parameters. A stability study based on the second method of Lyapunov guarantees the stability and convergence of the estimated parameters under certain conditions. We present an injection-locked divider (ILFD) with a double-balanced structure to generate two signals with tunable phase difference. A circuit prototype was designed and fabricated using a standard 0.18mum digital CMOS technology, and generates dual-phase signals at 4.8-6 GHz. The phase difference of the two output signals can be tuned independently by 55deg, and differentially by 100deg, both centered around quadrature (90deg). The phase noise degradation is negligible

The development of effective classification techniques, particularly unsupervised classification, is important for real-world applications since information about the training data before classification is relatively unknown. In this paper, a novel unsupervised classification algorithm is proposed to meet the increasing demand in the domain of network intrusion detection. Our proposed UNPCC (Unsu-pervised Principal Component Classifier) algorithm is a multi-class unsupervised classifier with absolutely no requirements for any a priori class related data information (e.g., the number of classes and the maximum number of instances belonging to each class), and an inherently natural supervised classification scheme, both which present high detection rates and several operational advantages (e.g., lower training time, lower classification time, lower processing power requirement, and lower memory requirement). Experiments have been conducted with the KDD Cup 99 data and network traffic data simulated from our private network testbed, and the promising results demonstrate that our UNPCC algorithm outperforms several well-known supervised and unsupervised classification algorithms. © 2006 IEEE.
