An efficiency optimization method for vector-controlled surface permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) drives including online estimation of all parameters is presented. The controllable electrical loss can be minimized by the optimal control of the armature current vector. Parameter variations except at near the nominal conditions have undesirable effect on the controller performance, so it is essential to estimate motor parameters. A stability study based on the second method of Lyapunov guarantees the stability and convergence of the estimated parameters under certain conditions. The simulation results show the feasibility and desirable performance of the proposed controller and observer

We present an injection-locked divider (ILFD) with a double-balanced structure to generate two signals with tunable phase difference. A circuit prototype was designed and fabricated using a standard 0.18mum digital CMOS technology, and generates dual-phase signals at 4.8-6 GHz. The phase difference of the two output signals can be tuned independently by 55deg, and differentially by 100deg, both centered around quadrature (90deg). The phase noise degradation is negligible

The development of effective classification techniques, particularly unsupervised classification, is important for real-world applications since information about the training data before classification is relatively unknown. In this paper, a novel unsupervised classification algorithm is proposed to meet the increasing demand in the domain of network intrusion detection. Our proposed UNPCC (Unsu-pervised Principal Component Classifier) algorithm is a multi-class unsupervised classifier with absolutely no requirements for any a priori class related data information (e.g., the number of classes and the maximum number of instances belonging to each class), and an inherently natural supervised classification scheme, both which present high detection rates and several operational advantages (e.g., lower training time, lower classification time, lower processing power requirement, and lower memory requirement). Experiments have been conducted with the KDD Cup 99 data and network traffic data simulated from our private network testbed, and the promising results demonstrate that our UNPCC algorithm outperforms several well-known supervised and unsupervised classification algorithms. © 2006 IEEE.

To reduce the simulation time to a tractable amount or due to compilation (or other related) problems, computer architects often simulate only a subset of the benchmarks in a benchmark suite. However, if the architect chooses a subset of benchmarks that is not representative, the subsequent simulation results will, at best, be misleading or, at worst, yield incorrect conclusions. To address this problem, computer architects have recently proposed several statistically-based approaches to subset a benchmark suite. While some of these approaches are well-grounded statistically, what has not yet been thoroughly evaluated is the: 1) absolute accuracy; 2) relative accuracy across a range of processor and memory subsystem enhancements; and 3) representativeness and coverage of each approach for a range of subset sizes. Specifically, this paper evaluates statistically-based subsetting approaches based on principal components analysis (PCA) and the Plackett and Burman (P&B) design, in addition to prevailing approaches such as integer vs. floating-point, core vs. memory-bound, by language, and at random. Our results show that the two statistically-based approaches, PCA and P&B, have the best absolute and relative accuracy for CPI and energy-delay product (EDP), produce subsets that are the most representative, and choose benchmark and input set pairs that are most well-distributed across the benchmark space. To achieve a 5% absolute CPI and EDP error, across a wide range of configurations, PCA and P&B typically need about 17 benchmark and input set pairs, while the other five approaches often choose more than 30 benchmark and input set pairs

The work presented in this paper aims at combining fuzzy function approximation and reinforcement learning in order to create robotic soccer agents that are able to coordinate their behaviours locally and socially while learning from experience. This simultaneous coordination and learning ability can play a crucial role in improving the behaviour usage of robotic soccer agents. To achieve this goal, a fuzzy reinforcement learning technique for a single agent is first examined and then this technique is applied to multiple agents. The conducted experiments through a soccer simulation system show that the performance of robot scoring speed is improved using the proposed approach.

Contrast enhancement has an important role in image processing applications. Conventional contrast enhancement techniques either fail to produce satisfactory results for a broad variety of low-contrast images, or cannot be automatically applied to different images, because their parameters must be specified manually to produce a satisfactory result for a given image. This paper describes a new automatic method for contrast enhancement. The basic procedure is to first group the histogram components of a low-contrast image into the proper number of bins according to a selected criterion, then redistribute these bins uniformly over the grayscale, and finally ungroup the previously grouped gray-levels. Accordingly, this new technique is named gray-level grouping (GLG). GLG not only produces results superior to conventional contrast enhancement techniques, but is also fully automatic in most circumstances, and is applicable to a broad variety of images

Power system stabilizers (PSSs) are used to generate supplementary control signals to excitation systems in order to damp out local and inter-area oscillations. In this paper, a modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with a small population is presented for the design of optimal PSSs. The small population based PSO (SPPSO) is used to determine the optimal parameters of several PSSs simultaneously in a multi-machine power system. In order to maintain a dynamic search process, the idea of particle regeneration in the population is also proposed. Optimal PSS parameters are determined for the power system subjected to small and large disturbances. The effectiveness of the PSSs parameters determined by the SPPSO algorithm is observed in damping out the power system oscillations fast after a disturbance. The advantage of the proposed approach is its convergence in fewer evaluations and lesser computations are required per evaluation. Results obtained with the SPPSO optimized PSSs parameters are compared against published PSS parameters for the Kundur's two area power system

High-performance systems often require parallel processing of multiple data streams with strict timing constraints. With stringent system requirements, obtaining the highest performance is achieved by constructing specialized custom hardware - i.e. ASIC. However, when systems employ highly dynamic tasks that reflect various application requirements, the ASIC approach becomes very expensive because it needs to implement all task algorithms in hardware. Dynamically reconfigurable systems (DRS) can become a cost-effective solution by saving area and power through only loading currently requested and optimized tasks into a partially reconfigurable FPGA. This paper uses the framework of the DRS to effectively implement stream processing applications and to increase the cost-effectiveness of the DRS in a multi-task and multi-mode environment. We present an integrated wideband directional coupler for millimeter-wave applications implemented in low-cost silicon technologies. It is constructed using broad-side coupled coplanar waveguides (CPW), taking advantage of available multiple metal layers in silicon technologies. A prototype coupler was designed and fabricated using a commercial 0.18mu digital CMOS technology with low-resistivity epi substrate. It achieves a 10-40 GHz frequency range (3-dB bandwidth) with 7 dB to 10 dB coupling and more than 10 dB directivity. Measurement results match well with electromagnetic simulation
