We present automatic target recognition (ATR) model based on principles of biological vision systems. The model employs reinforcement learning (RL) through Dual Heuristic Programming (DHP). The performance of the reported ATR model is compared to that of our previously reported ATR model, based on Heuristic Dynamic Programming (HDP). The HDP and DHP, known as the Adaptive Critic Designs (ACD), are neural network based implementation of Dynamic Programming (DP). The simulation shows promising results for both HDP and DHP based ATR model in presence of resolution distortion in incoming images and confirms that the DHP model is faster and more robust for our ATR system than the HDP.

The stringent emission mask and interference specifications in ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse radios present great challenges for the transceiver architecture design and circuit implementation. This paper proposes to use integrated distributed transversal filters (DTF) for pulse shaping in the transmitter and for narrow-band interference (NBI) suppression in the receiver. Analyses show that an integrated DTF can accurately generate notches at multiple frequencies with tunability and relatively low power consumption. A 7-tap DTF prototype was implemented using a commercial 0.18 mum SiGe BiCMOS technology. Measurement results demonstrate the pulse shaping and interference suppression capabilities of DTFs. The typical power consumption of the prototype is 30 mW

This presentation considers the impact on logic design and computing of the fundamental unreliability of nanoscale device technologies. In general, these technologies will provide implementations of logic gates and circuits where logic levels are “0” or “1” with some probability related to the error rates of gates and interconnect. In this context, reliable circuit design becomes a problem of maximizing the probability of the correct logic levels of the output of the function implemented by the circuit for the relevant inputs. This presentation reviews some recent results and proposes new ideas for the characterization and design of probabilistic logic. Since the early days of computing it has been well known that the design of reliable arbitrary logic circuits is only possible if individual gates have error rates below some threshold which varies with gate functionality. Using bifurcation analysis of probabilistic gate models, thresholds for different types of gates are derived and their implications for logic design are revisited. Similar techniques are used to analyze multi-gate circuits and the functions they implement. The resulting thresholds provide reliability bounds for the circuits. Also considered are several proposed models for either analyzing reliability or maximizing it. Reference is also made to circuits designed to implement probabilistic computations.

This paper presents the design of a wide area monitor (WAM) using remote area signals, such as speed deviations of generators in a power network, for identifying online the dynamics of a static var compensator (SVC). The design of the WAM is studied on the 12 bus FACTS benchmark system recently introduced. A predict-correct method is used to enhance the performance of the WAM during online operation. Simulation results are presented to show that WAM can correctly identify the dynamics of SVC in a power system for small and large disturbances. Such WAMs can be applied in the design of adaptive SVC controllers for damping interarea oscillations in power networks

This paper describes a robotic application that tracks a moving object by utilizing a mobile robot with multiple sensors. The robotic platform uses a visual camera to sense the movement of the desired object and a range sensor to help the robot detect and then avoid obstacles in real time while continuing to track and follow the desired object. In terms of real-time obstacle avoidance capacity, this paper also presents a modified potential field algorithm called dynamic goal potential field algorithm (DGPF) for this robotic application specifically. Experimental results show that the robotic and intelligent system can fulfill the requirements of tracking an object and avoiding obstacles simultaneously when the object is moving

This paper presents an adaptive optimal control scheme for a grid independent photovoltaic (PV) system consisting of a PV collector array, a storage battery, and loads (critical and non-critical loads). The optimal control algorithm is based on the model-free heuristic dynamic programming (HDP), an adaptive critic design (ACD) technique which optimizes the control performance based on a utility function. The HDP critic network is used in a PV system simulation study to train a neurocontroller to provide optimal control for varying PV system output energy and load demands. The emphasis of the optimal controller is primarily to supply the critical base load demand at all times. Simulation results are presented to compare the performance of the proposed optimal scheme with the conventional priority control scheme. Results show that HDP based control scheme performs better than a conventional priority control scheme

Severe energy constraints of battery-powered sensor nodes necessitate energy-efficient communication protocols in order to fulfill application objectives of wireless sensor networks (WSN). However, the vast majority of the existing solutions are based on classical layered protocols approach. It is much more resource-efficient to have a unified scheme which melts common protocol layer functionalities into a cross-layer module resource-constrained sensor nodes. To the best of our knowledge, to date, there is no unified cross-layer communication protocol for efficient and reliable event communication which considers transport, routing, medium access functionalities with physical layer (wireless channel) effects for WSNs. In this paper, a unified cross-layer protocol is developed, which replaces the entire traditional layered protocol architecture that has been used so far in WSNs. Our design principle is complete unified cross-layering such that both the information and the functionalities of traditional communication layers are melted in a single protocol. The objective of the proposed cross-layer protocol is highly reliable communication decisions and local congestion avoidance. To this end, the protocol operation is governed by the new concept of initiative determination. Based on this concept, the cross-layer protocol performs received based contention, local congestion control, and distributed duty cycle operation in order to realize efficient and reliable communication in WSN. Performance evaluation results show that the proposed cross-layer protocol significantly improves the communication efficiency and outperforms the traditional layered protocol architectures.

A new approach to achieve a switched-capacitor multiply-by-two gain-stage with reduced sensitivity to capacitors' mismatches is presented in this paper. It is based on sampling fully differential input signals onto both plates of the input capacitors rather than sampling onto one plate of the capacitors with the other tied to a reference. It uses one operational amplifier (op-amp) in two phases to produce the gain of two (×2). Comparing to the conventional multiply-bytwo gain-stage, the mismatches between the capacitors has a much smaller influence on the accuracy of the gain of two (×2). Analytical and circuit-level analysis of the architecture and the conventional structure are presented using a generic 0.35μm CMOS technology. © 2006 IEEE.

Heuristic approaches are traditionally applied to find the size and location of flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices in a small power system. Nevertheless, more sophisticated methods are required for placing them in a large power network. Recently, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique has been applied to solve power engineering optimization problems giving better results than classical methods. This paper shows the application of PSO for optimal sizing and allocation of a static compensator (STATCOM) in a power system. A 45 bus system (part of the Brazilian power network) is used as an example to illustrate the technique. Results show that the PSO is able to find the best solution with statistical significance and a high degree of convergence. A detailed description of the method, results and conclusions are also presented

In this paper, a novel supervised classification approach called Collateral Representative Subspace Projection Modeling (C-RSPM) is presented. C-RSPM facilitates schemes for collateral class modeling, class-ambiguity solving, and classification, resulting a multi-class supervised classifier with high detection rate and various operational benefits including low training and classification times and low processing power and memory requirements. In addition, C-RSPM is capable of adaptively selecting nonconsecutive principal dimensions from the statistical information of the training data set to achieve an accurate modeling of a representative subspace. Experimental results have shown that the proposed C-RSPM approach outperforms other supervised classification methods such as SIMCA, C4.5 decision tree, Decision Table (DT), Nearest Neighbor (NN), KNN, Support Vector Machine (SVM), 1-NN Best Warping Window DTW, 1-NN DTW with no Warping Window, and the well-known classifier boosting method AdaBoost with SVM. © 2006 IEEE.
