This paper presents the design of a new control strategy for gate-controlled series compensators (GCSCs). GCSCs are new FACTS devices which can provide active power flow control on a transmission line. Proper placement of GCSCs in proximity to generators can also provide damping to system oscillations. This paper has investigated the effectiveness of multiple multi-module gate controlled series compensators (MMGCSCs) for large power systems. MMGCSCs can be less expensive devices with wide range of control of capacitive reactance in series with transmission lines. A nonlinear modified PI (NMPI) control is developed to provide power flow control and enhanced transient stability margin of the multi-machine power system. The NMPI is designed using a multi-layer neural network to approximate the blocking angle from the effective capacitive compensation provided by PI controller. A neural network with few neurons trained offline is used as an approximator /estimator for each MMGCSCs. This method has been shown effective for small and large disturbances on the IEEE 39 bus power system

High-performance multiprocessor systems built around out-of-order processors with aggressive branch predictors execute many memory references that turn out to be on a mispredicted branch path. Previous work that focused on uniprocessors showed that these wrong-path memory references may pollute the caches by bringing in data that are not needed on the correct execution path and by evicting useful data or instructions. Additionally, they may also increase the amount of cache and memory traffic. On the positive side, however, they may have a prefetching effect for memory references on the correct path. While computer architects have thoroughly studied the impact of wrong-path effects in uniprocessor systems, there is no previous work on its effects in multiprocessor systems. In this paper, we explore the effects of wrong-path memory references on the memory system behavior of shared-memory multiprocessor (SMP) systems for both broadcast and directory-based cache coherence. Our results show that these wrong-path memory references can increase the amount of cache-to-cache transfers by 32%, invalidations by 8% and 20% for broadcast and directory-based SMPs, respectively, and the number of writebacks by up to 67% for both systems. In addition to the extra coherence traffic, wrong-path memory references also increase the number of cache line state transitions by 21% and 32 % for broadcast and directory-based SMPs, respectively. In order to reduce the performance impact of these wrong-path memory references, we introduce two simple mechanisms - filtering wrong-path blocks that are not likely-to-be-used and wrong-path aware cache replacement - that yield speedups of up to 37%.

This paper describes the integration of wavelet analysis and time-domain beamforming of microphone array output signals for analyzing the acoustic emissions from airplane generated wake vortices. This integrated process provides visual and quantitative simultaneous information about the wake signal composition and array resolution for a particular wavelet subspace during a time interval, T. In the results section, an example is given on how image processing algorithms might be used to automate the extraction of this information and select the wavelet subspaces from which to perform image reconstruction. This process begins with the projection of all the microphone signals on wavelet multi-resolution subspaces. The projections of these signals on the same wavelet subspace or scale are then beamformed to produce an image of the wake corresponding to that particular scale. Therefore for each time interval T, the process produces a number of images equal to that of the wavelet scales. This is equivalent to a more conventional Fourier-based idea of filtering the microphone signals with band-pass liters having non-uniform bandwidths then beamform in different sub-bands, but offers greater flexibility and enhanced computational speed. Results from both approaches will be shown, which ultimately illustrate the advantages of wavelet analysis over that of the Fourier-based analysis. Amongst the advantages are the speed of the decomposition and ease of the image reconstruction from selected subspaces aided by the perfect reconstruction and orthogonality properties of wavelet analysis.

Neural networks have been shown to be useful tools for density estimation. However, the training of neural network structures is time consuming and requires fast processors for practical applications. A new method with a generalized neuron (GN) for density estimation is presented in this paper. The GN is trained with the particle swarm optimization algorithm which is known to have fast convergence than the standard backpropagation algorithm. Results are presented to show that the GN can estimate the density functions for distribution functions with different means and variances. This density estimation method can also be applied to the multi-sensor data fusion process

Much attention has been paid upon network data flow control in recent years. The main problem in this field is how to design good algorithm or control law for flow rate of network data flow sources and for updated price of communication links. Base on Lyapunov stability theory, this paper makes a deep analysis of stability of such network data flow control systems with the consideration of dynamic link capacity case. Simulations show that the stability analysis of dynamic link capacity of network data flow control system provided in the paper is enlightening and meaningful to further understand and design good control strategy of network data flow control problem. © Springer-Verlag Berlin/Heidelberg 2006.

A novel nonlinear optimal neurocontroller for a static compensator (STATCOM) connected to a power system, using artificial neural networks, is presented in this paper. The heuristic dynamic programming (HDP) method, a member of the adaptive critic designs (ACD) family, is used for the design of the STATCOM neurocontroller. The proposed controller is a nonlinear optimal controller that provides coupled control for the line voltage and the dc link voltage regulation loops of the STATCOM. An action dependent approach is used, in which the controller is independent of a model of the network. Moreover, a proportional-integrator approach allows the neurocontroller to deal with the actual signals rather than the deviations. Simulation results are provided to show that the proposed ACD based neurocontroller is more effective in controlling the STATCOM compared to finely tuned conventional PI controllers.

The increasing complexity of the modern power grid highlights the need for advanced modeling and control techniques for effective control of excitation and turbine systems. The crucial factors affecting the modern power systems today is voltage control and system stabilization during small and large disturbances. Simulation studies and real-time laboratory experimental studies carried out are described and the results show the successful control of the power system excitation and turbine systems with adaptive and optimal neurocontrol approaches. Performances of the neurocontrollers are compared with the conventional PI controllers for damping under different operating conditions for small and large disturbances

Power system stabilizers (PSSs) provide stabilizing control signals to excitation systems to damp out inter-area and intra-area oscillations. The PSS must be optimally tuned to accommodate the variations in the system dynamics. Designing multiple optimal PSSs is a challenging task for researchers. This paper presents the comparison between two bio-inspired algorithms: a small population based particle swarm optimization (SPPSO) and the bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA) for the simultaneous tuning of a number of PSSs in a multi-machine power system. The cost function to be optimized by both algorithms takes into consideration the time domain transient responses. The effectiveness of the algorithms is evaluated and compared for damping the system oscillations during small and large disturbances. The robustness of the optimized PSSs in terms of damping is shown using the matrix pencil analysis
