In this work, we focus on increasing network utilization to support real-time applications, especially voice over IP, in 802.11b wireless mesh network. For increasing capacity, we investigate on two directions: use of packet aggregation and utilize of header compression. Although aggregation reduces 802.11 MAC overhead, it also increases delay. We present a distributed multihop aggregation algorithm that uses the "natural" waiting time in the interface queue of packets in a loaded network. Header compression can relax the VoIP protocol overhead, but it also introduces the signaling overhead. In our work, we propose a zero-length header compression algorithm integrated with packet aggregation, which doesn't need to depend on the signaling mechanism to recover the context discrepancy between compressor and decompressor. The above performance optimization techniques are experimented in the NS2 simulator. The experimental results show an increase of 12 times for a six hop string when all optimizations are used

The use of wide area measurements for power system stabilization is recently given a lot of attention by researchers and the power industry to avoid cascading failures and blackouts such as the August 2003. This paper presents the design of a nonlinear external damping controller based on wide area measurements as inputs to a dual function neuron (DFN). This DFN controller is specifically designed to enhance the damping characteristics of a power system considering the nonlinearity in the system. The major advantage of the DFN controller is that it is simple in structure with less development time and hardware requirements for real-time implementation. The DFN controller is implemented on a digital signal processor and its performance is evaluated on the IEEE 12 bus FACTS benchmark power system implemented on a real time platform - real time digital simulator (RTDS). Experimental results show that the DFN controller provides better damping than a conventional linear controller

Assured forwarding per-hop behavior (AF PHB) is a forwarding scheme for providing QoS in DiffServ networks. It defines four classes and three drop precedence, where buffer space and bandwidth are defined as forwarding resources for each AF class (J. Heinanen et al., 1999). RIO (D.D. Clark and W. Fang, 1998) could be used as drop policy in a DiffServ router. AF PHB could be implemented by WRR, WFQ, CBQ, etc. When network managers provide AF PHB using the scheduling mechanisms, they want to guarantee accurate achievement of service expectation level, which results from precise queue weight allocation to each AF class with respect to forwarding resources, i.e., buffer space and bandwidth. In order to provide a guideline for the precise queue weight allocation, this paper proposes a simple analytical model for AF PHB designed on RIO and M/M/1 queue, and uses this model to obtain queue weight equation (QWE), which performs fine calculation of queue weight for AF classes. Average buffer space and bandwidth allocated for each AF class are used in derivation of QWE. The model verification is performed by simulation in which we use WRR for simplicity. Simulation results show that the QWE supports an accurate allocation of the forwarding resources, and, as a result, makes four AF classes achieve fairness as well as service expectation levels

We demonstrate field trial experiments to evaluate a 10-Gb/s optical 3R regenerator using fiber recirculation loops built with 264-km and 462-km SSMF fiber in field. Error-free transmission over 264,000-km with 1,000 optical 3R regeneration stages has been achieved. Experimental results indicate only 1.5-dB power penalty at BER 10 -9 after 264,000-km.

We consider improving the performance of communications over unknown channels with unknown frequency offsets. In lieu of the commonly suggested double differential (DD) modulation/detection, we consider single differential (SD) modulation/detection. We propose an approach that first estimates and compensates for the frequency offset and then detects using an existing multiple symbol detector for SD modulation. We introduce a simple data-symbol- independent frequency offset estimation method, which is reasonably accurate when using a data block larger than the one used for detection. Simulation results show that the SD modulation/detection approach proposed herein can significantly outperform the DD modulation/detection schemes.

To provision the enhanced support for wireless Internet services, high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) was standardized in 3GPP. It offers peak air interface data rates of up to 14.4 Mbps with 5 Mhz bandwidth, thus dramatically improving the existing packet service capability of UMTS R99. At the same time, Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) has been standardized in 3GPP2 to provide up to 4.9 Mbps throughput with 1.25 Mhz bandwidth. However, because of inter-cell interferences, users in the cell edge area generally cannot enjoy the higher data rate supported by the standard. Moreover, to meet the system fairness criterion, a base station usually needs to allocate un-proportional radio resource to these users. In this paper, we propose a simple interference mitigation scheme to enhance cell edge user data rate through network coordination. It is demonstrated through extensive simulations that the scheme significantly improves cell edge user throughput without lowering the total system capacity and spectral efficiency.

The problem of delayed reward in reinforcement learning is usually tackled by implementing the mechanism of eligibility traces. In this paper we introduce an extension of eligibility traces to solve one of the challenging problems in reinforcement learning. The concept of opposition traces is proposed in this work to deal with large state space problems in reinforcement learning applications. We combine the idea of opposition and eligibility traces to construct the oppositionbased Q(λ). The results are compared with the conventional Watkins' Q(λ) and reflect a remarkable performance increase. © 2006 IEEE.

Voltage stability is a key issue to achieve the uninterrupted operation of wind farms equipped with doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) during grid faults. A static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is applied to a power network which includes a DFIG driven by a wind turbine, for steady state voltage regulation and transient voltage stability support. The control schemes of the DFIG rotor-side converter, grid-side converter and the STATCOM are suitably designed and coordinated. The system is implemented in real-time on a Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDSreg). Results show that the STATCOM improves the transient voltage stability and therefore helps the wind turbine generator system to remain in service during grid faults

The increasing effect of wind energy generation will influence the dynamic behavior of power systems by interacting with conventional generation and loads. Due to the inherent characteristics of wind turbines, non-uniform power production causes variations in system voltage and frequency. Therefore, a wind farm requires high reactive power compensation. Flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices such as SVCs inject reactive power into the system which helps in maintaining a better voltage profile. This paper presents the design of a linear and a nonlinear coordinating controller between a SVC and the wind farm inverter at the point of interconnection. The performances of the coordinating controllers are evaluated on the IEEE 12 bus FACTS benchmark power system where one of the generators is replaced by a wind farm supplying 300 MW. Results are presented to show that the voltage stability of the entire power system during small and large disturbances is improved

We propose an image formation algorithm for ultrasound imaging based on sparsity-driven regularization functionals. We consider data collected by synthetic transducer arrays, with the primary motivating application being nondestructive evaluation. Our framework involves the use of a physical optics-based forward model of the observation process;the formulation of an optimization problem for image formation;and the solution of that problem through efficient numerical algorithms. Our sparsity-driven, model-based approach achieves the preservation of physical features while suppressing spurious artifacts. It also provides robust reconstructions in the case of sparse observation apertures. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our imaging strategy on real ultrasound data. © 2006 IEEE.
