We formulate and analyze a three-dimensional model of motion camouflage, a stealth strategy observed in nature. The pursuer and evader trajectories are described using natural Frenet frames (or relatively parallel adapted frames), and the corresponding natural curvatures serve as controls. A high-gain feedback control law is derived. The biological plausibility of the feedback law is discussed, as is its connection to missile guidance. Simulations illustrating motion camouflage are also presented. This paper builds on recent work on motion camouflage in the planar setting

This paper evaluates the behavioral effect of RObust Header Compression (ROHC) and packet aggregation in multi-hop wireless mesh networks. ROHC itself shows around 20% achieved rate improvement on a line of wireless link even if as the number of mesh router increases, total achieved rate gradually decreases. Packet aggregation cooperating with ROHC provides 4 to 10 times achieved rate improvement and results in maximum 6 times reduction of end-to-end delay. Even if the ROHC and packet aggregation gives such a promising improvement, we need to identify effect of the processing time of the two schemes on overall wireless mesh network behaviors. To do this work, we measure/use ROHC processing time from Pentium 4 and RouterBOARD 230, and apply the results into NS-2 simulations. The simulation results show high performance improvement from ROHC and packet aggregation deteriorates as a general purpose processor in a mesh router takes much time to deal with the two schemes. This result motivates a hardware design be required to speed up the processing units of the two schemes. Consequently, we propose a hardware system model for ROHC and packet aggregation by using SystemC Hardware Description Language (HDL). From the SystemC results, we conclude the proposed built-in processor design for the two schemes keeps performance improvement by enhancing the low speed processing power of general purpose processors.

A critical issue in wireless sensor networks is topology management, and maintaining connectivity throughout the network and having a sufficient network lifetime in particular. There have been many topology management schemes proposed. Most of them conserve energy by periodically putting nodes to sleep. One consideration often overlooked is the fact that sensor nodes fail, especially in harsh environments. In this paper, a modification to an existing topology management scheme, Naps, is proposed to ensure very minimal data loss while also handling node failures. The idea is to conserve energy to prolong the lifetime of the nodes and the sensor network while maintaining a constantly connected sensor network. Simulation results demonstrate that failed nodes do not have a significant impact on network connectivity or lifetime, at least in a random, uniform deployment. The paper also illustrates that two different approaches taken in the Naps modification for compensating for failed nodes produce similar results

A smart power ASIC (SPIC) for a distributed power system

We describe the design and implementation and discrete validation of a high-voltage BCD-technology-based smart power integrated circuit (SPIC) design, which is an 'one-chip solution' to control, drive, and protect a two-stage distributed power system (DPS). As such, the proposed SPIC achieves higher power density, reduced design-cycle time, and enhanced system reliability. DPS comprises a front-end ac/dc single-switch power factorcorrection (PFC) converter, which is cascaded with a back-end dc/dc four-switch full-bridge zero-voltage switching (FBZVS) converter. The current- and the voltage-mode controllers for the PFC and the FBZVS converters, respectively, are integrated into the SPIC. The SPIC can 'directly' fire the two high-side and three low-side devices in the power system. A combination of bootstrap and charge-pump techniques is used to power the gate drive circuits for the high-side power devices;hence, the duty cycle for a high-side power device is 100% and independent of the turn-on time of the low-side power device in the same leg of the FBZVS converter. Additionally, a more reliable two-stage fault protection scheme is implemented in the SPIC including protection features such as under-voltage lockout, over-current protection, adaptive shoot-through protection, and soft-start capability. This paper illustrates several key experimental results obtained by controlling DPS using the discrete SPIC to validate the functionalities of the latter and the satisfactory performance of the overall system. © Indian Institute of Science.

The cyclic difference sets constructed by Singer are also examples of perfect distinct difference sets (DDS). The Bose construction of distinct difference sets, leads to a relative difference set. In this paper we introduce the concept of partial relative DDS and prove that an optical orthogonal code (OOC) construction due to Moreno et. al., is a partial relative DDS. We generalize the concept of ideal matrices previously introduced by Kumar and relate it to the concepts of this paper. Another variation of ideal matrices is introduced in this paper: Welch ideal matrices of dimension n by (n - 1). We prove that Welch ideal matrices exist only for n prime. Finally, we recast an old conjecture of Golomb on the Welch construction of Costas arrays using the concepts of this paper. This connection suggests that our construction of partial relative difference sets is in a sense, unique

This paper proposes a novel threshold control approach for creating multi-scroll chaotic attractors. The general jerk circuit is used as an example to show the working principle of this method. The controlled jerk circuit can emerge various limit cycles and n-scroll chaotic attractors by adjusting the upper threshold, lower threshold, and the width of inner saturated plateau. The dynamical mechanism of the threshold control is then further explored by analyzing the system dynamical behaviors. In particular, this method is effective and simple to implement since we only need monitor a single state variable and reset it if it exceeds the thresholds. It indicates the potential engineering applications for various chaos-based information systems

This paper presents automated methods for robust modeling and analysis of 3-D tumor microvasculature. Our methodology uses a cylindroidal superellipsoid to model localized segments of vasculature. The proposed vessel model has an explicit, low-order parameterization, allowing for joint estimation of boundary and centerline information, thereby approximating the medial axis. Further, this explicit parameterization provides a geometric framework for traversing vessels in a directed manner. Topological information like branch point location and connectivity is provided as a side effect. The proposed methodology behaves quite well across scalespace, shows a high degree of insensitivity to adjacent structures and implicitly handles branching. Exemplar results are presented from a pre-clinical study of tumor microvasculature in mice

In this paper, we develop a novel digital-shot system for sensing the throwing force information of shot-put athletes in real time. The digital-shot has been designed and manufactured with the same external dimensions and weight as the normal shot for open females. The three axes integrated accelerometer, as a crucial device in the force sensing system, can acquire the kinetics data along three orthogonal directions with reasonably high accuracy. By using the method of wavelet transformation, the characteristics of acceleration signals during the shot-put period can be extracted. Artificial neural network is adopted to recognise the movement pattern in different phases of shot throwing. For supplying more effective training instruction, with the help of six axes ground reaction force measuring apparatus, high-speed photography and surface electromyographic signal remote measuring device etc, an integrated platform of shot-put athlete biomechanical information acquisition is constructed. Based on the fusion of multi-targets and multi-parameters information, the shot-put athletes coaching system is proposed, which not only can supply constructive guidance for athletes to improve their skills, but also provide a new research platform of motion human modeling.
