This paper describes a simple system that can be used for autonomous demand-side management in a load site such as a home or commercial facility. The system identifies the operation of individual loads using transient patterns observed in the voltage waveform measured at an electric service outlet. The theoretical foundation of the measurement process is introduced, and a preprocessor that computes short-time estimates of the spectral content of the voltage waveform is described. The paper presents several example measurements demonstrating the ability of the system to obtain estimates of the spectral content of the voltage waveform.

The need to improve retrieval of the surface wind vector and sea surface temperature (SST) from WindSat and the upcoming NPOESS Conical Microwave Imager Sounder (CMIS) motivated measurements of the microwave emission from breaking waves, both on the open ocean and in a wave basin. Aircraft and satellite measurements have demonstrated that the wind direction dependence of ocean surface brightness temperatures is small, on the order of 1-3 K peak-to-peak. Therefore, the accuracy of wind vector retrieval depends strongly upon quantitative knowledge of the relationship of the ocean surface emissivity to surface properties, such as sea surface wave spectrum and wave breaking. The effects of the surface wave spectrum have been addressed by many studies, but the azimuthal dependence of the microwave emission from breaking waves and foam has not been adequately addressed. Recently, a number of experiments have been conducted to quantify the increase in sea surface microwave emission due to foam. The Polarimetric Observations of the Emissivity of Whitecaps EXperiment (POEWEX'04) was conducted during November 2004 to measure the azimuthal dependence of reproducible breaking waves in order to improve wind vector retrieval from spaceborne radiometric measurements, especially at wind speeds of 7 m/s and higher. We extend existing models to better characterize the impact of the physical layer on random-access performance, and we highlight some ambiguities and inaccuracies that have been prevalent in the literature since physical models for capture were first studied. Earlier studies of capture in random-access systems are applicable only to narrowband systems, although this limitation is often not noted. We present an analytical model that is applicable to wideband systems as well. Simulation is used to evaluate performance because of the high complexity of the analytical model. We present performance results for both single-destination and multiple-destination networks

In this paper, a novel agent-based distributed intrusion detection system (IDS) is proposed, which integrates the desirable features provided by the distributed agent-based design methodology with the high accuracy and speed response of the principal component classifier (PCC). Experimental results have shown that the PCC lightweight anomaly detection classifier outperforms other existing anomaly detection algorithms such as the KNN and LOF classifiers. In order to assess the performance of the PCC classifier on a real network environment, the relative assumption model together with feature extraction techniques are used to generate normal and anomalous traffic in a LAN testbed. Finally, scalability and response performance of the proposed system are investigated through the simulation of the proposed communication architecture. The simulation results demonstrate a satisfactory linear relationship between the degradation of response performance and the scalability of the system

In this paper, we investigate the important problem of optimal path selection and rate allocation for concurrent video sessions in a multihop wireless network. We present a novel formulation of the problem, which optimizes the application level performance such as video distortion, while seamlessly incorporating the network layer parameters such as packet delay and loss. For the formulated problem, we propose a branch-and-bound framework, predicated on the powerful reformulation-linearization technique, that can produce (1-epsi) optimal solutions. We demonstrate through analytical and simulation results that the proposed mechanism can fully utilize the network capacity and improve the quality of reconstructed video. The proposed approach provides an important methodology for addressing non-convex, non-polynomial programming problems that arise in wireless networks, especially those involving cross-layer design and optimizations

In this paper, we consider a UWB-based ad hoc network and study how to maximize data rate utility for a group of communication sessions. We formulate the data rate utility problem into a nonlinear programming (NLP) problem through a cross-layer approach by taking into consideration of scheduling and power control at link layer and routing at network layer. The main contribution of this paper is the development of a solution procedure based on branch-and-bound framework. We employ a powerful optimization technique called reformulation linearization technique (RLT) to obtain a linear relaxation, which is a key component required in the branch-and-bound framework. Numerical results demonstrate the importance of cross-layer approach and offer some important insights

This paper reports results from wideband MIMO measurements performed in short range fixed wireless environments at 5.2 GHz. The objective is to provide MIMO channel characterization results for the measured environments and contribute to the limited available similar studies. Two kinds of propagation scenarios are investigated, rooftop to rooftop and street to rooftop, at three different sites always under LOS propagation conditions. The analysis of measurement data is performed in the context of non physical modeling, providing insight into the statistics of the measured channels. In particular, the slow time varying nature of the channel is studied and the narrow Doppler spectrum shape is approximated. Furthermore, frequency correlation results are obtained and the typical delay dispersion measures are extracted. Then, the antenna correlation is studied and the error of the Kronecker product approximation is evaluated. Finally, capacity results are provided and the channel measurements are characterized in terms of spatial multiplexing quality and multipath richness through condition number analysis. © Springer 2006.
