TCP-peach++: Enhancement of TCP-peach+ for satellite IP networks with asymmetrical bandwidth and persistent fades - (invited paper)

In this paper, an improvement to TCP-Peach+, called TCP-Peach++, is proposed to improve the throughput performance for satellite IP networks with asymmetrical bandwidth and persistent fades. The delayed SACK scheme is adopted to address the problems due to bandwidth asymmetrical satellite links. A new protocol procedure, Hold State, is developed to address the link outages due to persistent fades. The simulation results show that TCP-Peach++ improves the throughput performance during rain fades and addresses the bandwidth asymmetry problems in Satellite IP Networks. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Sensor networks (SNETs) for monitoring spatial phenomena has emerged as an area of significant practical interest. We focus on the important problem of detection of distributed events, sources, or abnormalities that are localized, i.e., only a small number of sensors in the vicinity of the phenomena are in the field of observation. This problem complements the standard decentralized detection problem, where noisy information about an event is measured by the entire network. For localized phenomena the main difficulty arises from the coupling of: a) noisy sensor observations that lead to local false positives/negatives;and b) limited energy, which constrains communication among sensor nodes. Together these difficulties call for reaching a decentralized statistical ordering based on limited collaboration. We are then led to the following fundamental problem: determine the most probable event locations while minimizing communication cost. Our objective in this paper is to characterize the fundamental trade offs between global performance (false alarms and miss rate) and communication cost. We develop a framework to minimize the communication cost subject to worst-case misclassification constraints by making use of the false discovery rate (FDR) concept along with an optimal local measure transformation at each sensor node. The preliminary results show that the FDR concept applied in a sensor networks context leads to significant reduction in the communication cost of the system. A very interesting implication of this work is that the detection performance of a wireless sensor network is comparable to that of a wired network of sensors. © 2005 IEEE.

Given a directed graphical model with binary-valued hidden nodes and real-valued noisy observations, consider deciding upon the maximum a-posteriori (MAP) or the maximum posterior-marginal (MPM) assignment under the restriction that each node broadcasts only to its children exactly one single-bit message. We present a variational formulation, viewing the processing rules local to all nodes as degrees-of-freedom, that minimizes the loss in expected (MAP or MPM) performance subject to such online communication constraints. The approach leads to a novel message-passing algorithm to be executed offline, or before observations are realized, which mitigates the performance loss by iteratively coupling all rules in a manner implicitly driven by global statistics. We also provide (i) illustrative examples, (ii) assumptions that guarantee convergence and efficiency and (iii) connections to active research areas.

Due to the simulation time of the reference input set, architects often use alternative simulation techniques. Although these alternatives reduce the simulation time, what has not been evaluated is their accuracy relative to the reference input set, and with respect to each other. To rectify this deficiency, this paper uses three methods to characterize the reduced input set, truncated execution, and sampling simulation techniques while also examining their speed versus accuracy trade-off and configuration dependence. Finally, to illustrate the effect that a technique could have on the apparent speedup results, we quantify the speedups obtained with two processor enhancements. The results show that: 1) The accuracy of the truncated execution techniques was poor for all three characterization methods and for both enhancements, 2) The characteristics of the reduced input sets are not reference-like, and 3) SimPoint and SMARTS, the two sampling techniques, are extremely accurate and have the best speed versus accuracy trade-offs. Finally, this paper presents a decision tree which can help architects choose the most appropriate technique for their simulations. © 2005 IEEE.

On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) is a trend in database technology, based on the multidimensional view of data. Numerous applications and development environments exist, offering OLAP analysis to developers, analysts and end users. Further more, mobile devices find their way into almost all aspects of every day life, ranging from cellular phones with advanced capabilities (smart phones) for personal use to professional PDA’s used for numerous wireless applications – OLAP included – and thus generating the need for convergence of the two technologies. In this paper we introduce the term Mobile OLAP to express the porting of requirements and specifications for OLAP applications into the wireless and mobile computing world. More specifically, we examine the requirements posed for OLAP visualization applications on mobile devices, both in terms of presentation and usability. We then proceed by investigating the state of the art of the broader wireless computing community, focusing in the specifications more close to OLAP. Finally, we demonstrate how a "lightweight" presentation model for OLAP can significantly contribute towards mobile OLAP. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

X-ray luggage inspection systems play an important role in ensuring air travelers' security. However, the false alarm rate of commercial systems can be as high as 20% due to less than perfect image processing algorithms. In an effort to reduce the false alarm rate, this paper proposes a combinational scheme to fuse, de-noise and enhance dual-energy X-ray images for better object classification and threat detection. The fusion step is based on the wavelet transform. Fused images generally reveal more detail information;however, background noise often gets amplified during the fusion process. This paper applies a background-subtraction-based noise reduction technique which is very efficient in removing background noise from fused X-ray images. The de-noised image is then processed using a new enhancement technique to reconstruct the final image. The final image not only contains complementary information from both source images, but is also background-noise-free and contrast-enhanced, therefore easier to segment automatically or be interpreted by screeners, thus reducing the false alarm rate in X-ray luggage inspection. © 2005 IEEE computer Society. This paper shows how information gets created, stored and dissipated in statistical inference problems and points out how historical information, and information relevant to estimating the present and future, must be treated differently. A fundamental understanding of how information and energy flows is looked at in "networked" situations, and what the "laws" of conservation (dissipation) of information and energy flows might be. These ideas have implications in the study of the problem of stabilization over noisy communication channels.

As the costs and challenges of global clock distribution grow with each new microprocessor generation, a Globally Asynchronous, Locally Synchronous (GALS) approach becomes an attractive alternative. One proposed GALS approach, called a Multiple Clock Domain (MCD) processor, achieves impressive energy savings for a relatively low performance cost. However, the approach requires separating the processor into four domains, including separating the integer and memory domains which complicates load scheduling, and the implementation of 32 voltage and frequency levels in each domain. In addition, the hardware-based control algorithm, though effective overall, produces a significant performance degradation for some applications. In this paper, we devise modifications to the MCD design that retain many of its benefits while greatly reducing the implementation complexity. We first determine that the synchronization channels that are most responsible for the MCD performance degradation are those involving cache access, and propose merging the integer and memory domains to virtually eliminate this overhead. We further propose significantly reducing the number of voltage levels, separating the Reorder Buffer into its own domain to permit front-end frequency scaling, separating the L2 cache to permit standard power optimizations to be used, and a new online algorithm that provides consistent results across our benchmark suite. The overall result is a significant reduction in the performance degradation of the original MCD approach and greater energy savings, with a greatly simplified microarchitecture that is much easier to implement. © 2005 IEEE.

The vehicle's battery system consists of a series connection of 26 12volt lead-acid batteries. This paper details the design and construction of a battery voltage equaliser which aims to balance the charge level of each individual battery within an hour. These batteries are divided into four banks of either six or eight batteries. Four 144W converters are required to transfer energy between the banks and the ends of the bus. 25 24W converters transfer energy between adjacent batteries. Due to the numbers of converters involved, the size, weight, cost, manufacturability, and efficiency are the key points of the design. © Institution of Engineers.
