The formal analysis of parallelism and pipelining is performed on an 8-bit add-compare-select element of a Viterbi decoder. The results are quantified through a study of the delay and energy behaviors of gates and complex circuits due to supply scaling and circuit optimization on a modified test setup accounting for routing cost. The energy-throughput relationships of both pipelining and parallelism are characterized in connection to their corresponding depth and degree, showing clear advantages of pipelining over parallelism.

computer network data stream used in intrusion detection usually involve many data types. A common data type is that of symbolic or nominal features. Whether being coded into numerical values or not, nominal features need to be treated differently from numeric features. This paper studies the effectiveness of two approaches in handling nominal features: a simple coding scheme via the use of indicator variables and a scaling method based on multiple correspondence analysis (MCA). In particular, we apply the techniques with two anomaly detection methods: the principal component classifier (PCC) and the Canberra metric. The experiments with KDD 1999 data demonstrate that MCA works better than the indicator variable approach for both detection methods with the PCC coming much ahead of the Canberra metric. © 2005 IEEE.

With the deregulation of power industry, many tie lines between control areas are driven to operate near their maximum capacity, especially those serving heavy load centers. Wide area controllers (WACs) using wide-area or global signals can provide remote auxiliary control signals to local controllers such as automatic voltage regulators, power system stabilizers, etc to damp out inter-area oscillations. The power system is highly nonlinear system with fast changing dynamics. In order to have an efficient WAC, an online system monitor/predictor is required to provide inter-area information to the WAC from time to time. This paper presents the design of an online Wide Area Monitor (WAM) using a neural network called the Wide Area Neuroidentifier (WANI). The WANI is used to predict ahead the speed deviations of generators in the different areas using phasor measurement unit (PMU). Results are presented to show the effectiveness of the wide area monitor for different disturbances. © 2005 IEEE.

In powerline communications the signal transmission characteristics of the power line carrier are very significant. This paper presents part of the research work done on the development of an integrated Energy Consumption Management System based on powerline communications. Field test results, concerning signal transmission characteristics on power lines in pilot installations are reported. The well known EMTP is used for the simulation of the transmission path. Simulation results, obtained for the no-load and for the full load cases and after the implementation of carrier wave traps, are compared to the actual measurements from field tests, showing satisfactory agreement. The influence of line length and of line terminations is also investigated for both underground cables and overhead distribution lines.

In this paper we consider cellular networks in which the cells may overlap substantially. Such network architectures, which are motivated by the need to increase the utilization of the available bandwidth by reducing the separation among cells that share the same channel, present new unexplored and fundamental problems. We begin by considering two cells whose assigned user populations overlap spatially, and use a common channel. Consequently, transmissions intended for one base station can cause interference at the other. The interaction between such cells is best exemplified if the protocol of access in each cell is pure random access. For Slotted Aloha, we present a simple mathematical analysis that predicts accurately the maximum achievable throughput. We demonstrate that an invariance (or "self-stabilization") property exists that allows the maximum throughput to occur when the expected total channel traffic in each cell is equal to one packet per slot, independent of the degree of overlap of the cells. We then consider larger multi-cell networks and observe the same invariance property in our simulations. Consequently, in planar cellular networks there are no end effects, and coupling is limited only to adjacent overlapping cells. Thus it is possible to evaluate random access throughput by considering only the local neighborhood of a cell. © Copyright 2015 IEEE All rights reserved.

Characterization and models for multi-gigabit signaling is an important issue in modern digital system. A good physical based model relies on a precise characterization of the test board. Typically, the characterization of the test board is associated with scattering matrix parameter measurement, which can be done with a VNA (Vector Network Analyzer) in the frequency-domain or a TDR (Time Domain Reflectometer) in the time-domain. The commonly used launch techniques on PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards) associated with the VNA or TDR measurement in the microwave frequency range use SMA or 3.5 mm connectors, in edge-launch or vertical-launch fashions. The transition between the launch port and the DUT (Device Under Test) introduces errors in the measurement. Embedding/deembedding techniques are used to remove the port influences in the measurement generally. For example, TRL (Through, Reflect, and Line) calibration is the typical method used in measurement to eliminate port influences. However, extra test kits are needed for TRL calibration, and furthermore the TRL calibration is sometimes difficult to implement, such as in coupled differential lines. In this paper, an effective hybrid approach for transmission line characterization is proposed, which includes choosing a suitable port launch technique for the test board, port parasitic parameters estimation, and building up a proper circuit model for evaluation with genetic algorithms (GA). © 2005 IEEE.

Implementation of data mining applications is a challenging and complicated task, and the applications are often built from scratch. In this paper, a component-based application framework, called smart archive (SA) designed for implementing data mining applications, is presented. SA provides functionality common to most data mining applications and components for utilizing history information. Using SA, it is possible to build high-quality applications with shorter development times by configuring the framework to process application-specific data. The architecture, the components, the implementation and the design principles of the framework are presented. The advantages of a framework-based implementation are demonstrated by presenting a case study which compares the framework approach to implementing a real-world application with the option of building an equivalent application from scratch. In conclusion, the paper presents a lucid framework for creating data mining applications and illustrates the importance and advantages of using the presented approach.

This paper presents a feature point tracking algorithm using optical flow under the non-prior training active feature model (NPT-AFM) framework. The proposed algorithm mainly focuses on analysis of deformable objects, and provides real-time, robust tracking. The proposed object tracking procedure can be divided into two steps: (i) optical flow-based tracking of feature points and (ii) NPT-AFM for robust tracking. In order to handle occlusion problems in object tracking, feature points inside an object are estimated instead of its shape boundary of the conventional active contour model (ACM) or active shape model (ASM), and are updated as an element of the training set for the AFM. The proposed NPT-AFM framework enables the tracking of occluded objects in complicated background. Experimental results show that the proposed NPT-AFM-based algorithm can track deformable objects in real-time. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In this paper, a framework for replacing missing values in a database is proposed since a real-world database is seldom complete. Good data quality in a database can directly improve the performance of any data mining algorithm in various applications. Our proposed framework adopts the basic concepts from conditional probability theories and further develops an algorithm to facilitate the capability of handling both nominal and numerical values, which addresses the problem of the inability of handling both nominal and numerical values with a high degree of accuracy in the existing algorithms. Several experiments are conducted and the experimental results demonstrate that our framework provides a high accuracy when compared with most of the commonly used algorithms such as using the average value, using the maximum value, and using the minimum value to replace missing values. © 2005 IEEE.
