SSF-Net: Spatial-Spectral Fusion Network with Spectral Angle Awareness for Hyperspectral Object Tracking

Hyperspectral video (HSV) offers valuable spatial, spectral, and temporal information simultaneously, making it highly suitable for handling challenges such as background clutter and visual similarity in object tracking. However, existing methods primarily focus on band regrouping and rely on RGB trackers for feature extraction, resulting in limited exploration of spectral information and difficulties in achieving complementary representations of object features. In this paper, a spatialspectral fusion network with spectral angle awareness (SST-Net) is proposed for hyperspectral (HS) object tracking. Firstly, to address the issue of insufficient spectral feature extraction in existing networks, a spatial-spectral feature backbone (S2FB) is designed. With the spatial and spectral extraction branch, a joint representation of texture and spectrum is obtained. Secondly, a spectral attention fusion module (SAFM) is presented to capture the intra- and inter-modality correlation to obtain the fused features from the HS and RGB modalities. It can incorporate the visual information into the HS spectral context to form a robust representation. Thirdly, to ensure a more accurate response of the tracker to the object position, a spectral angle awareness module (SAAM) investigates the region-level spectral similarity between the template and search images during the prediction stage. Furthermore, we develop a novel spectral angle awareness loss (SAAL) to offer guidance for the SAAM based on similar regions. Finally, to obtain the robust tracking results, a weighted prediction method is considered to combine the HS and RGB predicted motions of objects to leverage the strengths of each modality. Extensive experiments on the HOTC dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed SSF-Net, compared with state-of-the-art trackers. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Federated learning (FL)-enabled digital twin (DT) has recently attracted research attention to bring intelligent applications. However, enabling the FL-enabled DT in vehicular networks becomes challenging due to vehicle mobility’s impact on communication channels. In this regard, we propose to deploy an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as a relay node to support the vehicular network. The objective is to minimize energy consumption under the trade-off with the latency and accuracy constraints of the DT model via a joint optimization of local accuracy, the local computation frequency, relay decision, and transmission power. To do so, we derive instantaneous formulas to update the accuracy and latency constraints, then solve the proposed problem using an iterative algorithm with convex optimization techniques. Numerical results show that the proposed dynamic optimization for UAV-aided vehicular networks can reduce up to 39.9% of consumption energy compared to conventional methods.

The clean and renewable nature of energy harvested using the Photovoltaic (PV) technology makes it one the fastest growing technologies used in producing electricity. Due to the relatively low efficiency of the various solar cells available in the market, solar trackers and Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithms are used extensively to operate the system at its full potentials. Knowing that such systems are installed in outdoor spaces, they are inevitably subjected to partial shading conditions, where different parts of the system are subjected to different levels of solar irradiance. In case of occurrence of partial shading conditions on a PV system equipped with bypass diodes, the Power-Voltage (P-V) curve will have multiple peaks. This multi-peak curve requires using a sophisticated algorithm to track the Global Maximum Power Point (GMPP) instead of being deceived and trapped in a Local Maximum Power Point (LMPP). In this paper, the Crayfish Optimization Algorithm (COA) is suggested to track the GMPP of a PV system under partial shading conditions. The COA algorithm fetch for the GMPP by reading the PV panel output power and setting accordingly the duty cycle of the buck converter. Simulation is carried out using the MATLAB/Simulink platform and results demonstrate good tracking performance and prove the robustness of the system against rapid variations in solar irradiance levels.

Success in collaborative and competitive environments, where agents must work with or against each other, requires individuals to encode the position and trajectory of themselves and others. Decades of neurophysiological experiments have shed light on how brain regions [e.g., medial entorhinal cortex (MEC), hippocampus] encode the self's position and trajectory. However, it has only recently been discovered that MEC and hippocampus are modulated by the positions and trajectories of others. To understand how encoding spatial information of multiple agents shapes neural representations, we train a recurrent neural network (RNN) model that captures properties of MEC to path integrate trajectories of two agents simultaneously navigating the same environment. We find significant differences between these RNNs and those trained to path integrate only a single agent. At the individual unit level, RNNs trained to path integrate more than one agent develop weaker grid responses, stronger border responses, and tuning for the relative position of the two agents. At the population level, they develop more distributed and robust representations, with changes in network dynamics and manifold topology. Our results provide testable predictions and open new directions with which to study the neural computations supporting spatial navigation.

Uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) have attracted recent attention for sixth-generation (6G) networks due to their low cost and flexible deployment. In order to maximize the ever-increasing data rates, spectral efficiency, and wider coverage, technologies such as reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are adapted with UAVs (UAV-RIS NOMA). However, the error performance of UAV-RIS NOMA has not been considered, yet. In this letter, we investigate the error probability of UAV-RIS NOMA systems. We also consider the practical constraints of hardware impairments (HWI) at the transceivers, inter-cell interference (ICI), and imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). The analytical derivations are validated by Monte-Carlo simulations. Our results demonstrate that our proposed system achieves higher performance gain (more than 5 dB with increasing the number of RIS elements) with less error probability compared to UAVs without RIS. Moreover, it is found that the HWI, ICI, and imperfect SIC have shown a negative impact on the system performance. © 2024, CC0.

Solar photovoltaic (PV)-rich power distribution systems are networked Cyber-Physical systems (CPS). These are control systems where multiple computing nodes and diverse intelligent agents interact with the physical world in real-time. However, the presence of networked components renders them vulnerable to potential cyber-attacks, cyber-intrusions, and other malicious events. This is because these systems depend on the measurements reported from their heterogeneous sensors. This makes them vulnerable to potential cyber-attacks where malicious agents can compromise the sensors or the communication networks carrying the sensor measurements. This paper proposes a novel methodology for enhancing the cyber-security and cyber-resilient post-attack safe operation of solar PV-rich power distribution systems against potential cyber-attacks through the Dynamic Watermarking (DW), using online system identification. The resiliency of the proposed technique is tested and validated with several attack scenarios on both a lab-scale 3kW grid-connected PV inverter and a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) system. The proposed approach can be applied to other types of power distribution systems to enhance their cyber-secure and cyber-resilient safe operation. This paper thereby contributes to the field of cyber-security of Cyber-Physical Energy systems (CPES).

Active learning strategies for 3D object detection in autonomous driving datasets may help to address challenges of data imbalance, redundancy, and high-dimensional data. We demonstrate the effectiveness of entropy querying to select informative samples, aiming to reduce annotation costs and improve model performance. We experiment using the BEVFusion model for 3D object detection on the nuScenes dataset, comparing active learning to random sampling and demonstrating that entropy querying outperforms in most cases. The method is particularly effective in reducing the performance gap between majority and minority classes. Class-specific analysis reveals efficient allocation of annotated resources for limited data budgets, emphasizing the importance of selecting diverse and informative data for model training. Our findings suggest that entropy querying is a promising strategy for selecting data that enhances model learning in resource-constrained environments. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. This work presents a safe and efficient methodology for autonomous indoor exploration with aerial robots using Harmonic Potential Fields (HPF). The challenge of applying HPF in complex 3D environments rests on high computational load involved in solving the Laplace equation. To address this issue, the proposed solution utilizes the Fast Multiple accelerated Boundary Element Method with boundary values controlled to ensure both safety and convergence. The methodology is validated through simulations that demonstrate its efficiency, safety and convergence. © 2023, CC BY.
