Internet of Things for the Future of Smart Agriculture: A Comprehensive Survey of Emerging Technologies

This paper presents a comprehensive review of emerging technologies for the internet of things(IoT)-based smart *** begin by summarizing the existing surveys and describing emergent technologies for the agricultural IoT,such as unmanned aerial vehicles,wireless technologies,open-source IoT platforms,software defined networking(SDN),network function virtualization(NFV)technologies,cloud/fog computing,and middleware *** also provide a classification of IoT applications for smart agriculture into seven categories:including smart monitoring,smart water management,agrochemicals applications,disease management,smart harvesting,supply chain management,and smart agricultural ***,we provide a taxonomy and a side-by-side comparison of the state-ofthe-art methods toward supply chain management based on the blockchain technology for agricultural ***,we present real projects that use most of the aforementioned technologies,which demonstrate their great performance in the field of smart ***,we highlight open research challenges and discuss possible future research directions for agricultural IoTs.

Streamflow Prediction in the Mekong River Basin Using Deep Neural Networks

In recent years, the Mekong River Basin (MRB), one of the largest river basins in Southeast Asia, has experienced severe impacts from extreme droughts and floods. Streamflow forecasting has become crucial for effective risk management strategies in the region. However, this task presents significant challenges due to rapid climate changes and the presence of numerous newly constructed upstream dams, which disrupt the natural flow. In this paper, we develop multiple deep learning models (incl. Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Long short-term Memory (LSTM), and Transformer) to predict streamflow with different lead time forecasts based on observed meteorological variables and climatic indices (i.e., discharge, water level, precipitation, and temperature) from 1979 to 2019. The results indicate that LSTM obtains high performance for streamflow prediction in both dry and wet seasons while Transformer is not recommended for long-term prediction, especially in the dry season. The proposed deep learning models capture well the fluctuation of river flow in the MRB during the period of high-dam development, especially LSTM (NSE ≥ 0.8). The models' performances are enhanced with the adding of temperature for short-term prediction while precipitation was the most sensitive variable for long-term one. Such proposed models are essential for government agencies to plan mitigation and adaptation strategies at different periods, which can range from days to years. © 2013 IEEE.

A spontaneous group of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is denoted as a swarm of UAVs (S-UAVs). The UAVs communicate wirelessly and cooperate to accomplish tasks. In crisis scenarios such as flooding or earthquakes, all UAVs are at risk of getting damaged and thus non-functional. A non- functional UAV will result in a disconnected network, especially if that UAV is highly responsible for packet forwarding. S- UAV s are dynamic networks; clustering is one of the most adopted routing schemes in S-UAVs. The clustering scheme groups the UAVs into clusters where each cluster is formed of a cluster head (CH) and cluster members (CMs). Only the CH can handle inter-cluster communication. Due to the crucial role played by the CH, its selection is a continuous field of research. This paper proposes an enhanced clustered weighted scheme with redundancy to ensure end-to-end communication. The proposed scheme is based on a weighted formula for the primary CH, redundant CH, and CMs selection. The weighted formula calculates a cluster index based on the distance, the speed, and the reward index. A new component is added to the reward index which is performance. The redundant CH is selected to automatically replace the primary CH whenever it is damaged. If the redundant CH becomes inoperable, the second redundant CH will take over. Each cluster is formed of n CMs and will have n-2 redundant CHs. The results obtained from the conducted simulation experiments concluded that this promising scheme decreases data loss in a crisis case scenario.

REWAFL: Residual Energy and Wireless Aware Participant Selection for Efficient Federated Learning over Mobile Devices

Participant selection (PS) helps to accelerate federated learning (FL) convergence, which is essential for the practical deployment of FL over mobile devices. While most existing PS approaches focus on improving training accuracy and efficiency rather than residual energy of mobile devices, which fundamentally determines whether the selected devices can participate. Meanwhile, the impacts of mobile devices’ heterogeneous wireless transmission rates on PS and FL training efficiency are largely ignored. Moreover, PS causes the staleness issue. Prior research exploits isolated functions to force long-neglected devices to participate, which is decoupled from original PS designs. In this paper, we propose a residual energy and wireless aware PS design for efficient FL training over mobile devices (REWAFL). REWAFL introduces a novel PS utility function that jointly considers global FL training utilities and local energy utility, which integrates energy consumption and residual battery energy of candidate mobile devices. Under the proposed PS utility function framework, REWAFL further presents a residual energy and wireless aware local computing policy. Besides, REWAFL buries the staleness solution into its utility function and local computing policy. The experimental results show that REWAFL is effective in improving training accuracy and efficiency, while avoiding "flat battery" of mobile devices. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have the potential to revolutionize transportation, but their effective integration into the real world requires addressing the challenge of interacting with human drivers. Real-world driving involves negotiating and cooperating with fellow drivers through social cues, necessitating AVs to also demonstrate such social compatibilities. However, despite the popularity, current learning-based control methods for AV policy synthesis often overlook this crucial aspect. In this work, we look at the problem of enabling socially compatible driving when AV control policies are learned. We leverage human driving data to learn a social preference model of human driving and then integrate it with reinforcement learning-based AV policy synthesis using Social Value Orientation theory. In particular, we propose to use multi-task reinforcement learning to learn diverse social compatibility levels in driving (ex: altruistic, prosocial, individualistic, and competitive), focusing on the requirement of having diverse behaviors in real-world driving. Using highway driving scenarios, we demonstrate through experiments that socially compatible AV driving not only enables naturalistic driving behaviors but also reduces collision rates from the baseline. Our findings reveal that without social compatibility, AV policies tend to adopt dangerously competitive driving behaviors, while the incorporation of social compatibility fosters smoother vehicle maneuvers.

A swarm of unmanned aerial vehicles (S-UAVs) consists of UAVs flying together with the target of accomplishing a certain task in a faster and more reliable way as compared to a single UAV. In a crisis scenario, UAVs have been widely used in rescue missions. Clustering is one of the most reliable routing schemes for S-UAVs. The UAVs are grouped into clusters with a cluster-head (CH) and cluster-members (CM). The CH plays a major role in clustering schemes as it handles all inter-cluster communication. In a crisis case, any UAV is at risk of getting non-functional, thus resulting in a disconnected cluster. This paper proposes a new clustering scheme based on K-means and weighted formulas. The K-means protocol is applied to generate pilot phase clusters. Afterward, whenever the metrics of the networks are established, the weighted formula is applied for cluster formation and CH selection. The weighted formula is based on the performance index, the relative movement, and the remaining energy. To ensure end-to-end communication despite CH non-functionality, our proposed protocol selects a redundant CH for every CH. This protocol had been simulated using MATLAB. The results obtained and analyzed towards the end of this paper demonstrate that the proposed scheme is very promising.

The first course of control is under a critical review. Both the teaching material covered and the teaching methods require new considerations. Introducing interactivity in the education process makes the learning more successful and enjoyable. MATLAB provides an effective environment for learning and applying different disciplines. Control101 is a new MATLAB toolbox under development which provides tools for interactive learning of control disciplines. This paper presents the framework for teaching discrete control algorithms applied for processes containing large dead times.

CSQF-based Time-Sensitive Flow Scheduling in Long-distance Industrial IoT Networks

Booming time-critical services, such as automated manufacturing and remote operations, stipulate increasing demands for facilitating large-scale Industrial Internet of Things (IoT). Recently, a cycle specified queuing and forwarding (CSQF) scheme has been advocated to enhance the Ethernet. However, CSQF only outlines a foundational equipment-level primitive, while how to attain network-wide flow scheduling is not yet determined. Prior endeavors primarily focus on the range of a local area, rendering them unsuitable for long-distance factory interconnection. This paper devises the cycle tags planning (CTP) mechanism, the first integer programming model for the CSQF, which makes the CSQF practical for efficient global flow scheduling. In the CTP model, the per-hop cycle alignment problem is solved by decoupling the long-distance link delay from cyclic queuing time. To avoid queue overflows, we discretize the underlying network resources into cycle-related queue resource blocks and detail the core constraints within multiple periods. Then, two heuristic algorithms named flow offset and cycle shift (FO-CS) and Tabu FO-CS are designed to calculate the flows' cycle tags and maximize the number of schedulable flows, respectively. Evaluation results show that FO-CS increases the number of scheduled flows by 31.2%. The Tabu FO-CS algorithm can schedule 94.45% of flows at the level of 2000 flows. © 2024, CC BY.

Advanced smart grid applications such as wide-area monitoring, protection, and control (WAMPAC), considerably depend on the synchrophasor measurements gathered from different locations of the power grid. These timestamped measurements are provided by Phasor measurement units (PMUs) and phasor data concentrators (PDCs). These devices are optimally deployed at selected nodes in the grid. PMUs and substation PDCs are routable protocol-based network devices and comply with the IEEE C37.118 standard. Since the PMUs generally communicate through a public wide area network, they are vulnerable to cyberattacks. As a result, these vulnerabilities lead to compromised data integrity, confidentiality, and availability of the smart grid. To cover the cybersecurity vulnerabilities in synchrophasor communication and achieve compatibility between the data transfer based on IEEE C37.118.2 with IEC 61850 standard, IEC 61850-90-5 was released. This part of the standard includes security measures to achieve authentication, integrity, and confidentiality if required. In this work, we implemented publisher and subscriber libraries capable of routing secure GOOSE messages while respecting the time delay specifications set by the IEC61850 standard. The performance of encryption and authentication algorithms was assessed and experimentally verified. In addition, the proposed framework's robustness against cyber-attacks was evaluated.
